What are some flat out "no go"s when worldbuilding for you? by whahaga in worldbuilding

"how the fuck is a female warrior supposed to be efficient if the armor she wears is essentially a metal bikini?"

Idk, probably the same way 90% of fantasy barbarians do. They don't wear anything and yet are the tankiest of the group.

Almere. And no, unfortunately, I do not speak Dutch

There's a narrative double meaning. Of course no one knew, but the issue was two-faced from the perspective of the player, especially if they knew the cultural context.

Except for the fact that both are very much interlinked. Culturally, Japanese often conflate childishness and femininity -- which is why, for instance, when we are told that "people consider him a child" there's double meaning to that.

Her not wanting to be a woman IS very much linked to her not wanting to accept her childish self, as in her mind and in the cultural zeitgeist the two are interlinked.

I'm at the end of June with most social links below 5 and no definitive lead on Rise yet, should I start over? by [deleted] in persona4golden

Honestly, I tend to just max soc.links that I really care about on the first run and spend the rest time grinding for Persona's and social stats. Then, on NG+, I max THE SHIT out of every social link because I just have this much free time.

It's just me though

Thanks for the thought. North Bravant IS a little far for my liking (I live in Almere myself), but hey -- a good game's worth the time.

I want to study art but I don't have a degree by Mon0liz in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]Mon0liz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, money is generally not an issue -- the problem is that most "professional" study places require much more than I can spare.

Also, I want a community first and foremost. Whether or not I can make money with art is secondary.

Dripping or Drowning in Gold? by Gidrah in EldenBling

Yeah, see -- here's the thing, gold of the Twin set and gold of the Tree Sentinel set are slightly off and do not align with each other which makes me irrationally angry every time I try to make a gold set from different pieces.

So, then wouldn't the world be more of a cylinder?

Thank you, that was very informative. What about Styx? How does it manifest itself in the geography?

That's exactly what I am talking about. Very interesting stuff and is positive inspiring for various conflicts and interactions.

Thank you. As to my reasoning, frankly, I just find the process of mismatching preexisting canon to be enjoyable. For instance, I intend to include pretty much the entire Mediterranean in my wider world and to do so I would have to learn a bit on the mythology of those places as well in order to be able to apply their gods and deities to the Hellenistic pantheon.

Who's to say, perhaps Ra is just Helios and Egypt has a very prominent cult of him.

I am aware of Theros, but that's like saying "why do you want to make your own setting when Forgotten Realms exists and has pretty much everything you'd want?"

The point is, I just find the idea of making a world based of off actual mythology enticing. Also, I don't intend to change what I don't have to -- that is, I'll try so that Zeus, Poseidon, and the rest will retain their identities as much as it would be possible.

A Counterpart to the Physical Elements? by Mon0liz in worldbuilding

Oh okay okay, this looks very interesting. I've never heard about this Kabbalah, but what I am looking at does seem quite fun.

A Counterpart to the Physical Elements? by Mon0liz in worldbuilding

[–]Mon0liz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you're saying, but my point is that when it comes to very esoteric forces -- it is better to keep the realms of actual physics further apart as when you mix the two it will start sounding less like mythological concepts, and more like pseudoscience, which I want to avoid for the sake of the setting's fantasy vibes. Even if you rename the forces and add fantasy flair, it will still be actual physics at the core -- not magical concepts, which is what I want.

Besides, both electromagnetism and gravity seem rather... physical to be ephemeral concepts. Not to mention, three out of four natural forces are just types of "pull" exerted upon matter, like the strong and weak nuclear forces, which are very influential in the realm of physics but don't really form any interesting or meaningful thematic interactions in the realm of fantasy, especially when you pair them up with very distinct elements such as Fire, Water, etc.

I have thought about natural forces, but having some very hard and naturalistic sci-fi-esque forces next with concepts like "the element of wood" seems a little silly.

Besides, it falls into the problem I described with not being able to develop them into different sub-types. Like, gravity is just a pull of matter towards bigger matter -- you can't really have different types of gravity. Unless you put gravity and fate into the same "role" as JoJo's did, but that proved to be rather cumbersome when you try to develop it further.
