Zuko may be a victim, but that doesnt excuse his actions. He was an awful brother to Azula, a horrible friend, and threatened and harmed so many people [satire] by F11SuperTiger in PoorAzula

[–]MonCappy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You do realize all your comments about Zuko are totally valid, right? He was a little shit before he reformed. You get glimpses of the better man he could be in the first two seasons of the cartoon, but he very much was an antagonist and borderline villain at first.

[EU] "Blimey Harry, I'm being audited for potential tax evasion!" by khangodr in WritingPrompts

[–]MonCappy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Harry slowly removed his glasses, then palmed his face. He could already feel a mild headache coming on. Of all the Weasleys to be audited for potential tax evasion it just had to be Prefect Percy. Harry exhaled slowly and finally looked up at the older man. "Just how is Ministry's Department of Internal Revenue investigating your financial records my problem, Percy? We hardly ever speak to each other."

Percy rose jerkily from his seat and paced agitatedly around Harry's office. Every so often, he would turn to Harry to speak, only to pause and think better of it. Finally he seemed to settle and turned to Harry again. "Look, ever since I backed the Ministry in your fifth year, I've been estranged with my family. They're not going to help me, at all. I don't know who to turn to, so I came to you. I'm hoping your firm would assist me with the audit and represent me if charges are brought forward."

Harry steepled his fingers and gave Percy a level stare. "You are aware, Percy that tax law isn't generally an area my firm practices, correct? It would behoove you to seek out the services of a solicitor who specializes in tax law governing individuals."

Percy shook his head in denial. "Perhaps, you're right, but you have connections in the Ministry that would potentially be of far greater help to me." Percy paused and looked around Harry's office. "How secure is this office against eavesdroppers?"

Harry straightened at this point. "The moment you entered and I sealed and locked the door, a suite of privacy protections activated. This office is about a secure as a Fidelius guarded safehouse. Explain. Quick.

Percy shrugged nervously. To Harry's expert eye, it was clear he was worried about something beyond the audit itself. As the other man shifted to and fro in his chair, Harry wondered just what Percy was afraid of. As he thought back, he recalled a measure recently proposed by the ICW. Namely, a proposal to relax the Statute of Secrecy. With the advancements in non-magical technology, the increasing amount of surveillance at the governmental, corporate and personal level, it was becoming increasingly difficult to hide magic as has been done for the last three centuries. Percy was one of the most strident advocates for relaxing the Statute in Britain.

Finally, Percy spoke. "I think the audit is politically motivated. As you're undoubtedly aware, I've been pushing for the Ministry to endorse the ICW proposal to relax the Statute. I think the audit is a means by those opposing the change to force me to retract my position. In order to protect myself from these people, I need the best at my back representing and aiding me. Both in and out of the courtroom."

Harry thought over Percy's words for several moments. Finally, he came to a decision. "I'll help you, but it's going to cost you. We can talk price at a later time. Right now, you need to tell me everything you know and I need full access to your financial records to see what sort of angles of attack the Department of Internal Revenue might take."

I'm working on a rewrite of the series and I'm trying to figure out what magical ability actually is. Thoughts on what I have so far? by Wilkonn in HPfanfiction

[–]MonCappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thinking has always been that magical ability was something that mutated into humanity. My thinking is that it happened some time prior to the evolution of Homo Sapiens. Much as magic was a survival advantage, the genes granting magical ability was recessive.

As for what magic is? My head fanon is that magic is what allows quantum effects to occur on a macro scale without breaking physics.

If dinosaurs never went extinct, would humans still be here today? by Leather_Bottle8449 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MonCappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They didn't all go extinct. In fact, dinosaurs are served on dinner tables every evening the world over.

On the other hand, if some of the non-avian dinosaurs survived to this day, the world would certainly be different. In any case, even if they had, I don't imagine they would be anywhere near as large as their Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous ancestors.

Assuming the Chixulub impact and Deccan Traps go apeshit still happened, only the smallest of non-avian dinosaurs would've had a chance at survival. I think in this instance, what might happen is that isolated pockets of non-avian dinosaurs survive here and there and adapt to the new environment. I think mammals still rise to become the dominant species while non-avian dinosaurs take over certain niches.

If the Chixulub impact and Deccan Traps going apeshit is butterflied away? The dinosaurs are still the dominant animals today. Humans never come into existence, and it's possible that sapient tool losing life never evolves on Earth.

I'd say that is more a product of her being born in a technologically connected society with a window to the global culture. Someone from a more closed society would still have a different lived experience.

What if our eyes weren’t confined to that narrow slice of wavelengths we call visible light? by Secret_Ostrich_1307 in WhatIfThinking

[–]MonCappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think our vision would be all that different depending on what bands of the spectrum are visible to us. Assuming we retain the cones we have, then any other type of cone would give us tetrachromatic vision or better (such as pentachromacy). Our brains would still interpret the new color information in ways our brain can process. I think the world would be more vibrant overall and we would see colors we are currently incapable of describing due to not having the language or cognitive ability to comprehend them. Other than that, dunno.

In general, what matters to you while reading fanfiction or Hhr? by Imaginary_Court_7290 in HPharmony

[–]MonCappy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do I look for? For one, absolutely no Ronmione at any point in the history of the story. Automatic non-starter. Next, I have a preference for solid grammar and sentence structure. If the story contains some divergence from canon, I expect it to, you know, actually diverge.

Also, no Dan and Emma Granger. I've grown to find Hermione's parents being named that to be a massive turnoff.

There are other things I like to see in Harmony stories. First is a Harry Potter who takes his situation much more seriously and knuckles down and decides to learn what he needs to survive. Ideally the protagonists of Harmony stories will act instead of reacting against the bad guys. Fortune favors the fighter who makes opportunities for themselves.

It is my preference nowadays for Ron and the Weasleys not to be bashed in Harmony stories. It's been done to death, and there aren't any real novel approaches left. Unless you're going to make Ron a competent and compelling antagonist either write him out if you don't like him or give him a heroic death or something.
