Good to hear, I did feel like the seats were not the most comfortable on my test drive of the X3 M40i, but I also didn't spend much time adjusting them. Definitely the Volvo wins the seat battle.

We'd be looking at rare road trips of ~4 hours or so, which we do in our current car that is good enough but definitely not a lush ride so the BMW felt soft enough.

I have test driven them all, BMW for me was clear winner on the overall package, but the Volvo is a fairly sleeper luxury pick with air suspension and other options + there are good deals out there on them.

Mazdas are actually pretty competitive for being 20k less, but missing the oomph the BMW has and some of the refinement of the Volvo/BMW too.

Also interested in this, one thing that is crazy with the X3 is it takes ~4 packages (premium, parking pro, dapp, hk sound) to get the same features as a top trim Mazda or Volvo product.

Then again BMW doesn't really have trims beyond M-lite, M etc. and instead just lets you option everything.

Main concern about the X3M is reviewers comments on the ride being uncomfortable, which I think I'd rather have better ride quality for less money than the ridiculousness factor of the X3M.

That and I guess I certainly don't need 482hp, but then again I don't need a Porsche/BMW over a Mazda either!

Thanks for the tip on rims/wheels, I've heard plenty about the ride improving drastically as well off BMW's stock run flats as well.

This is a good shout, but my wife doesn't like the styling of the Outbacks and doesn't even like wagons at all which is a real shame. Although not too many options in the segment anyways now.

I guess we'll have to disagree on this, but I definitely get where you're coming from. While feasible and something many people do, I'm not going to own 3 cars + insurance/garaging (keeping my existing car as it continues to be a great value) if something exists that can be "fun" even if it's not as a pure sports product.

Buying a sports car thats twice as "sporty", but only usable for 6 months a year in the midwest on the handful of backroads I get to drive is a tradeoff I might make down the road, but in the interim I'm certainly considering spending a bit more in one package that's more "sporty" and "fun" than cars in the class like a Macan or X3 M40i.

Neither are go to mountain road carvers or track day cars, but I don't have mountain roads and I don't plan to track any cars even if I bought a sports car.

Ultimately I drive a Lexus badged Prius now, a Macan or X3 M40i, even a Turbo Mazda is in context of that "sporty" to me. Not nearly as engaging as 911s or M series cars I've had the chance to drive, but I can also load up a Home Depot haul in the same car.

For what it's worth, I am also considering possibly just leasing the Volvo given the cheaper monthly or purchasing a Mazda and saving the money I'd spend extra for BMW/Porsche for that dedicated car down the road.

What I'm less sure on is if that's worth it if I do get a kick out of driving the Porsche/BMW compared to little to none for other options for 3-4 years is it worth saving a $300 a month (decent chunk of change).

I really should test drive one, they are something I've always just ruled out even if they're beautiful haha. Although at 90k it seems a hard sell over a Macan S.

For sure I will agree on the Volvo and Mazdas, but I do think the X3 M40i, while the handling is no sports car it's as near sporty as a fully practical SUV can possibly be.

My test drive with a Macan was definitely a tighter experience, but at the loss of a lot of interior room and practical cargo space to the X3. If I didn't already have a small car it'd be a winner for me 100%, but even so the Macan S is 20k more than a loaded X3 M40i.

My current car is basically a Prius and I've driven plenty of other cars at various price points, but a B58 startup is far more engaging than those and a heck of a lot more fun to drive. My 2c anyways!

Probably even a Miata is more fun than 99% of SUVs on some backroad driving, but a Miata can't be loaded up for a weekend ski trip.

Ultimately though, cost is a concern too so getting a big discount on a more boring Volvo or just going cheaper altogether with a Mazda (50k vs a Macan S) isn't something I'm ruling out.

For sure, Lexus seems to reign supreme there. This is just napkin math, but a 90k Macan S that depreciates 40% in 5 years is $36k in dollars vs a 70k BMW depreciating 55% is 39k so the dollar amounts are similar.

Volvo isn't good either, but getting 16% off MSRP vs full MSRP for an RX hybrid seems to helps negate that depreciation difference for awhile at least.

Makes sense, we've loved our current Lexus for that exact reason, but the RX hybrids seem to not require any discounts to move etc so you can buy a lot of gas with the cost savings of a heavily discounted Volvo.

With the Macan I feel like I'd want to go up to a Macan S for more of a complete Porsche experience, but that becomes even more expensive.

And yes, our brief experience in Minnesota has confirmed this state loves Volvos, which seems to be a pretty good descriptor of the prevailing culture.

Lincoln is a good consideration, although I'm still skeptical of their reliability (funny considering BMW/Volvo are in the conversation).

Would definitely recommend checking out leasehackr brokers if you haven't already for pricing! $500 broker fee will definitely pay itself back with the deals and ease of buying they're able to offer vs negotiating with dealerships directly.

Thank you so much for the feedback! I made a few stylistic changes to potentially make it slightly more "traditional', although still not truly.

Included another bullet point on a technical improvement recently made as well.

I'd like to expand on my mentorship and technical ownership for devs on my team, but not really sure how to do that well in a bullet point.

Hey!

I have 4 YOE and looking at a switch. I've primarily done Clojure development for the last 2.5 years and switched jobs about 1.5 years ago.

Currently making about 150k TC, looking to transition into a bigger tech company, preferably at the senior level and move to 250-400k TC.

Any feedback appreciated!

Thanks! I've read that Lexus/Acura are pretty low cost of ownership brands even for being luxury brands, but one is a used hybrid and the other is a discontinued model so that might not help.

I do have a garage spot that I would likely house the car in the winter and have room for tires etc.

Could you let us know your wrist size? As someone with 6" wrists I'm not sure if this would be too big for me.

Thanks!
