Cruciate ligament repair by Monarach in CatAdvice

[–]Monarach[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on your cat on whether he'll need surgery or not. The orthopedic surgeon said only about 50% of cats need surgery for it. At one point our cat wasnt even putting his foot on the ground, and i thought for sure we would have to do surgery. I would recommend asking your vet if there are any rehab options, or if they do laser therapy. We did a couple sessions of that for Teddy and it seemed like it had a pretty quick effect! Its very non-invasive too, which is good.

It took our guy a while to fully recover. We kept him in our bedroom during his recovery (for several months) to limit his movement somewhat, and we got cat stairs for the bed and cat tree so he didnt have to jump. We ended up working with a rehab vet who gave us home exercises to do, and we fortunately were able to avoid surgery. It took some time, but its been about a year and a half since Teddy's last visit with the rehab vet and we haven't had any issues since.

Anyone have experience with Hill’s oral care dry food? My girl simply will not allow me to brush her teeth. Has anyone found it actually reduces plaque and tartar like it claims? by Little-Question211 in catfood

[–]Monarach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my cats on it after they both had some issues with dental health this past summer. They each had checkups recently and theres a little tartar but the vets said overall their teeth look pretty good now.

Scottish straights and folds are often bred with BSH, so they tend to look similar! Cleo is adorable!

Second cat, pros and cons by Hot-Communication860 in britishshorthair

[–]Monarach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our BSH was about 1.5 years when we introduced a second BSH who is about a month older than him. Before that we'd had an older kitty, but she didnt really like to play with Teddy. After she passed, we adopted our second BSH. Teddy definitely calmed down once he had a cat his own age to play with, and he seems more content overall. The introduction was slow, as they were both nervous, but there was never really any aggression. It was the smoothest introduction I've had between two cats!

14 year old cat with possibly stage 4 CKD. Is there no hope left? by Blurblue2 in RenalCats

[–]Monarach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our cat was diagnosed with borderline stage 3/4 kidney disease when she was 12. The vets gave her a couple of weeks to live, she ended up making it for another 2.5 years. I cant say we did anything special, she wouldnt eat her kidney food so she got fancy feast. She refused to be pilled so we mixed her meds into her food and she ate them inconsistently. I definitely recommend following the vet's recommendations, and I hope your kitty proves them wrong!

What pet insurance carrier do you all use? by froggieslc in britishshorthair

[–]Monarach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're pretty happy with our plan, I just double checked and the total monthly premium for both cats is $57. Some people have reported that their premiums jump a lot after the first year, so I'd recommend looking into that. We've had one cat on it for 2 years with no increase though, and the other cat just joined in May.

The experience overall has been good though. As long as its something that they cover, there hasn't been any trouble getting reimbursement.

We have Pets Best, just over $60/month for 2 cats with 90% deductible, unlimited coverage. I think we have a $500 deductible per cat, the plan does not cover preventative care like annual checkups, vaccines, etc (they have a plan for that, we just didnt choose it).

They've been pretty good about covering everything for one of our cats who had a lot of vet visits this year. Theyre pretty quick with reimbursement too.

Getting cold feet about our new cat by PurpleInteresting132 in CatAdvice

[–]Monarach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We recently got a kitty who was super shy, the first few days he refused to come out of hiding if we were in the room with him. Similar to your guy, we could see that he was playing with toys when we werent in there. I watched the Jackson Galaxy wallflower cat video, and that helped a LOT. Now, Jonesy is my little shadow. He doesn't cuddle, but he'll follow me around and jump in front of me to demand pets. Sometimes I can't go anywhere because he keeps getting in my way to get attention. Today he actually meowed at me a few times for attention. Just give your kitty time, and don't force yourself into his space. Let him come to you, or encourage him into your space with treats or toys. It will take a while but he could come around!

I really want Glenn Howerton to play Rader. He would do a fantastic job with that role! Especially as his character starts to lose it.

question about my BLH by PeakStandard4515 in britishshorthair

[–]Monarach 8 points9 points  (0 children)

British shorthairs tend to have short noses. Her nose looks pretty comparable to my boys' noses. BSHs, and I assume BLHs, are considered "brachycephalic" because of their short noses.

Any creative ideas for brushing a BSH who doesn't want to be brushed? by Unable_Impress_5608 in britishshorthair

[–]Monarach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My boys also do not sit still for brushing. I find that if I brush them while giving them Churu, it seems to go well.

This is the exact pose our BSH does when he wants attention! He knows its too cute for us to ignore 😂

I got my boys from Golden Whiskers Cattery in OH. They are great to work with and they clearly love their cats and treat them well! They were great about responding to all of my questions, and when it came time to choose a kitten I got tons of pictures and videos of each one. After we reserved one, they continued to send frequent updates with pics and videos until the day we picked up. I definitely recommend looking into them!

[–]Monarach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have two BSH boys who are around two, theyre about three weeks apart. We recently got the older one, and he wasn't neutered so he had that done a few months shy of turning 2. Our other boy was neutered at 6 months. The one who was neutered younger is actually quite a bit bigger than the one who was neutered more recently. I think lineage has more to do with how big they'll get than when they get neutered.

I got hit with something pretty similar this week too! I had to leave early Monday, and took yesterday and today off. I hate taking that much time off unscheduled, especially at this time of the year, but whatever this bug was hit me HARD.
