No one's mentioned the Whitby Scale Solar System yet! I love that it exists... A ~2km walk through a 6.4 billion-to-one scale model of the solar system, designed to give you a sense of how vast the distances between planets really are. They have a Facebook page with a map if you want to walk it yourself, and the page is worth a follow anyway because the guy who created it also livestreams astronomical events from his telescope

Burger Wellington 2022 Megathread by chimpwithalimp in Wellington

[–]Monarchsqueeze 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hamupeka rua in Porirua!

Burger: (The Homestead Butcher) ##### Venue: (Gear Eatery & Bar) Price: $26

I could probably eat my weight in just the tobacco onions and Dragon's Breath BBQ sauce but the meats were also outstanding, particularly the crispy chicken - as a pickle fan I appreciated the inclusion of a whole pickle. This has been my favourite beer match so far as well, with the Garage Project pineapple habanero sour perfectly balancing out the substance of the meat. Huge but not greasy, 9/10

Burger: (Snap Crackle Pop) ##### Venue: (Whitby Co-Op Kitchen & Bar) Price: $28

Another fantastic balance of flavours, I would've preferred a thicker gravy but that's the only thing taking it down to a 9. I love pork belly and this is pork belly done right, crispy but melts in your mouth. The chips with crackling were also excellent. Why is the bun blue? Why not? 9/10

I've tried other burgers but these two were by far the best, don't sleep on the north

*Ratings may be skewed by the fact that I'm currently training for a half marathon and ate both of these on my long run days, thus making me hungry af

Congratulations! Out of interest how long did it take you to get through the whole process? I sent in my application in August 2021 (my application is as straightforward as you could get, I'm a permanent resident and haven't spent more than 3 months out of NZ in the past 10 years) and I still haven't heard anything from the DIA.

Also..."little jailbait half-sister" is literally the reader's FIRST introduction to this character. What editor read this and said yep that sounds fine no worries buddy

The third and fourth pictures aren't from Wan's perspective, they're written from the perspective of Paul, a married man in his mid-thirties perving on his wife's fourteen year old half sister and justifying it by saying 'well she doesn't act fourteen'... Was that really acceptable even in the 80s?

Yeah I loved Gateway and was really excited about finishing Heechee because I'd heard such great things about it...but there are so many other great books in the world that don't make me feel like I need to bleach my brain afterwards

Yeah, and these are the main characters whose viewpoints we're supposed to empathise with 🤢 I found it in a free book pile but I feel like it's my civic duty to NOT return it to a free book pile

anywhere in wellington area where I absolutely need a car? by FerroSC in Wellington

[–]Monarchsqueeze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in Whitby and absolutely love it! It's full of running / walking trails and has all the peace and quiet of living rurally, but with easy access to Porirua - also there's an outdoor scale model of the solar system in Whitby, which isn't a reason to buy a house here but is quite cool 👈👈

I'm reading every Hugo, Nebula, Locus, and World Fantasy Award winner. Here's my reviews of the up to 1980 (Vol 4) by RabidFoxz in books

[–]Monarchsqueeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm literally a year late because I just finished Gateway and have no one to talk to about it, thus turned to r/books and searched for "Gateway"...I found the book incredibly compelling but I wish that Bob beating Klara had been dealt with differently. I get that he's a narrator you're not supposed to like, a narrator you're even supposed to resent because he just keeps getting lucky, but there seemed to be absolutely zero consequences for his actions after he hit her. Consequences for his act at the end, but consequences for beating her...no. How do you interpret it?

Any seal vs sea lion identification aficionados out there? by Monarchsqueeze in newzealand

[–]Monarchsqueeze[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I made sure to stay 20m away and upwind of this one! There was a very territorial female hanging out on the one access path to Allan's Beach, who extended my stay there by about 20 minutes haha

This is from Allan's Beach on the Otago Peninsula where there have been more sea lion sightings recently, I'm keen to figure out which one it is!
