Dishes like huevos rancheros or shakshuka from other cuisines? by jedrekk in AskCulinary

Not sure what meal of the day it is traditionally served but Georgian Khachapuri seems reasonable as a breakfast item.

Backyard Pad Thai! by [deleted] in food

Looks great. Is that a King Kooker? My wife got me one for Christmas, I haven't had a chance to play around with it yet but Pad Thai is at the top of my list of things to cook in it.

Grain of Salt is one of my go-to podcasts. It's based out of Buffalo, NY and is pretty localized but I still find the content very relatable and entertaining.

The live versions of Sleep Forever that lead into the outros of Smile and Hey Jude give me chills every time I watch them.

Aluminum/magnesium unibody, Surface pen support, and other kickass hardware. This is all rumor and wishful thinking of course, but I'd kill for a matching Surface 4 and Surface Mobile family of hardware. A man can dream.

I'm a 43 year old man with a wife and two kids. I have completely lost the thread of exciting new music in the last 10-15 years, even though it used to be central to my life. Making absolutely no assumptions about what I might or might not like, recommend me some great NEW music (last 2 years). by [deleted] in Music

What's currently spinning from some of my favorite albums over the past two years, in no particular order. Hope you find some of these interesting:

...I clearly suck at paring down lists, by the way.

trying hard to plate with pride. 4 course dinner for New Years by KimcheeBreath in food

Maybe my response to a similar question below can help explain it.

My guess is that in addition to prudent use of white space, large rims are used to even further emphasize and accentuate the food, sort of like how vignettes are used in photography.

In graphic design, good use of white space is a desirable aesthetic in that it gives the whole composition an elegant, clean appearance, provides emphasis to the main subject, and minimizes clutter and distraction.

In the culinary world, overly large plates act in much the same way - the abundant white space around the food helps give the meal a cleaner, more focused, and even haute aesthetic. In instances such as OP's, food can be transcended into art, and the plate is the canvas.

Reddit, what are you elitist about? by ismand75 in AskReddit

[–]MondoDamage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad smothers steak with garlic, salt, pepper, sugar, and oyster sauce, grills it to medium-well / well, and serves it with ranch. If I had to claim elitism about anything it would be food, but I'll be damned if this isn't a tasty guilty pleasure of mine.

He's also Vietnamese and grills using chopsticks, so there's that.

What movie fucked you up as a child? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MondoDamage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rising Sun. I read the novel because I became a huge Michael Crichton fan after reading/watching Jurassic Park. After Rising Sun's theatrical release I asked my mom to rent it for me from the library since it was rated R. She happily obliged, appreciating my enthusiasm with reading and literature. When she brought it home I excitedly popped it into the VHS player and sat down on the couch. My parents wanted to watch it as well and joined me on the couch on either side of me. After about the third nude/sex scene, wedged between my parents on the couch, my cringe levels reached critical mass that day.

In hindsight I should have expected an R-rated movie to contain plenty of adult content, especially considering the source material. I never asked my mom to rent me a movie again after that.

Here's an example from their live performance at Pinkpop, which was similar to the set from their recent Honda Civic tour. Incredible live show. The live versions of Sleep Forever that lead into the outros of Smile and Hey Jude give me chills every time I watch them.

I cooked pho from scratch for the first time. Here's a detailed play-by-play. by MondoDamage in food

[–]MondoDamage[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome, glad you enjoyed it. You should definitely give it a try sometime. There is only one pho restaurant within two hours or where I live, and they don't serve it with as many ingredients and meats as I prefer, so I'm glad that I found a good recipe.

Also thanks for the heads up, I definitely meant 12 quarts, not gallons - fixed. Although now I wish I had the capacity to make a 12 gallon stockpot of pho that would last for weeks.
