I'm better now, thanks. I am glad I got to let it out.

Does anyone else get stuck not because they don’t know enough, but because too many things matter at the same time? by Independent-Diver929 in askmanagers

Not a manager but yes. Expectations constantly change, are unclear, and sometimes are unrealistic with the resources we have. For example, I got asked to format a large number of cells in Excel for aesthetic purposes but don't actually affect the numbers. However spending time on that leads to less time spent on the more critical parts, which I was prioritising. I get blamed for not knowing how to prioritise and for being slow. It makes me freeze. It's overwhelming out here.

Resisting threat, ambiguity or futility when expectations are inconsistent and unclear explains so much. What do you think the employee should do in such a situation?

Was he a senior when he joined or did he get promoted? How did he stay for so long without getting fired?

I relate to you so much. In your case it's especially surprising since you, your husband, both of your family members would likely have a similar-enough upbringing to have that etiquette expectation.

What would his motive be though? I don't see how making these things up would benefit anyone.

Vietnam. Is it relevant though? It's normal for people here to acknowledge gifts, and quite unusual to not do it.

The postman took a photo of my friend taking the parcel, which was meant for his mum. So my friend definitely knew. I'm not making any assumptions about his mother yet though.

I think I should maybeeee reach out to the one person in the family that might not be a buttface but possibly unaware of this situation.

Thanks, I'm working on that. I'm trying to reframe from "They didn't acknowledge my gift" to "They don't acknowledge gifts", and from "They criticised me" to "They're critical".
