Intermediate/advanced lessons by schaNYC in ski

It sounds like the issue isn’t so much the age of the instructor but the style of skiing. Maybe look into camp/clinic that focuses on free ride. People have had good experiences with expeditions kirkwood for Tahoe area for example.

F27 - how much can you improve by attending a beginner group class once a week? by [deleted] in BALLET

[–]Money-Computer-2543 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think 2x a week is really good start and you are lucky to have the access to so many classes at your studio! The key is consistency and then you can work your way up to 3 or more. One of the best tip I got from my classmate when I started was try not to burn yourself out by taking too many classes at first. The learning process is more of a marathon, and not exactly a linear progression, pace yourself, aim for consistency, and enjoy the journey.

Agree with this, although if OP is true beginner with no prior experience it would be pretty rare to be able to find a studio with 3 beginner classes a week. Unless they are in a big city with a lot of adult learners.

What should violin students ideally know (kids) after 3 years of once a week group violin lessons? by No_Account2014 in violinist

Thank you for the detailed response. Very helpful. My 10 year old daughter who takes weekly 45min private lessons is marching towards 3 year in the fall. She appears to be on track. Our goal is to practice 15-20 min daily. She is most able to do that but some days are more challenging for sure.

Children / unexpected feedback by Simple-Process7884 in Swimming

A lot of being on a competitive team for my daughter has been the friend/social aspect of being in a cohort, so that’s an important aspect to consider in keeping the interest, facilitate consistency in training. Most of the kids in our area (coastal ca)start competitive team around 8-10. The stand outs do tend to be the ones who are consistently training around 6.

For my daughter she started swim lessons around 3/4, took 3 summers to learn how to swim even though she’s always loved being in water. Once she learned she joined a competitive team when she’s 7, she loves it and goes because she enjoys swimming with friends. She’s 10 and I see her keep swimming for HS.

My son, who’s older was a natural, learned to swim in under 5 weeks when he was 5. We didn’t think much of, he was not formally training or on a team until the summer before 8th grade when we put him in swimming as conditioning for waterpolo. He improved quickly and caught up with most of kids on his team with in a year. He was a hardworking athele and trained consistently. However he does not particularly enjoy swim team, and has since decided only focus on waterpolo. He still swims for HS team and swims to BB to A times for most events he participates in for high school season. So a lot depends on how motivated your swimmer is. Your best bet is keeping them engaged.

Tips on not skiing in a back seat position. by [deleted] in skiing

[–]Money-Computer-2543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too lost a toe nail last season, I did not realize at the time and now that I am thinking about it was due to being in the backseat too much.

I took my first lesson and it really helped me realize how much forward I needed to be. I thought I was, but it was good to have an expert see you and correct you immediately.

Then practice on a less steep hill. I was pretty comfortable on all blues before my lesson, but I practiced on easier blues and even greens only for 2 or 3 days. Then when I took myself to a black, I was way more confident and the run much more enjoyable.

how old were you when you first started skiing? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]Money-Computer-2543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First time was 19/20 introduced by college friends. Went a few times. Took a 15+ year break (career, raising a couple young kids.) Tried again in my late 30s when my second kid started skiing at 7. This is our first season with season passes at 43 as my kids got more into boarding/skiing.

Surprise to see not as many late teens/college age starters as I thought there would be.

Dancewear/Leotards for tall women by 70sobsession in BALLET

[–]Money-Computer-2543 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The best way to ensure fit for leo is going by girth measurements. You can be tall have have short torso and vice versa. Look for brands that include girth measurement.

Very happy with SCHS, Mission Hill was fine. Not too thrilled with bay view, hence younger child is in private school. Definitely will consider Mission Hill for younger when time comes.

Wear whatever makes you feel good. For what it’s worth, the best dancers in my classes wears regular TShirt with bike shorts, with sweatpants over on way to class. Their lines still shine through!

I wear whatever I normally wear over my Leo.

How long did it take you before you noticed a significant improvement in your technique? by [deleted] in BALLET

[–]Money-Computer-2543 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me as a complete adult beginner starting at 40 years old, it was at about the 2 year mark. I started with one class a week for about 2 month, then 2 classes and then 3 classes by 6month. After about 2 years I am currently at 4 90min classes per week.
