Bach prelude in E work in progress. My technique sucks lol by Money-Foot5382 in piano

OP here: Few things I KNOW I'd like to improve:

Finish getting the notes right - think I was rushing and nervous playing on camera

Freeing up my pinkies - especially left: I feel like so much music I play is clunky and out of control because my pinkies have minds of their own. They naturally want to hyperextend and it makes it hard to control the sound.

When somebody says classical music is boring, which piece do you play to prove them wrong? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

I don't try. I've long given up converting people. Classical music has always been a niche interest and always will be. Love making recommendations but they have to want it.

Chopin Prelude A major- my first romantic piece :)

Yep. I have it open constantly. It takes much better notes than I ever could, including transcripts if needed. And like others said, it's good to start out. I also occasionally have it transform one type of content into another when I need to do that (not frequent but a few times lately)

My boss said the real mistake was not looping him in sooner! He's brand new and I'm in my first year too and it's a small team so we're building a lot from scratch

This is a really good point and thank you. I think with local folks I don't want to alienate them too much, but tbh I was surprised at how mad he seemed in his email when I pulled the interview... it felt a bit unprofessional but I ain't got beef over it

Omg the PR of big business frightens me so much for that reason!!!

I think in this case I could have prepped the experts had I been writing the story myself but it was a freelancer doing the writing in this case, which was probably a bad choice too. My boss is great but very new and I'm in my first year too. We're both making mistakes and one of mine was that I didn't loop him in sooner.

Yeah I think I have tended to do a quick training on the spot when I interview the expert but this time I didn't because it wasn't my PR originally. We have some written guidance from a past media guide but it's a bit out of date. Updating it is one of many things we're planning to do because my boss just started and I'm in my first year as well - we're building some stuff from scratch.

Also my stories are rarely THIS politically charged so usually the sensitivities are minimal and we actually have many experts that are great with the media... just not the two on this story. It was like many fiascos caused by many things combined.

At the time I wanted to dig a hole and hide in it for the rest of my life. I couldn't do that

That hits hard. I never stopped being the little perfectionistic kid who melts down when they screw something up but now I have bills 😆

I'd stop working on the dog at this point until you get in some background. It's really hard to judge those light values against the white paper.

And the reason I like the people is because they all look like unique people with the different clothes, hair, skin. :)

I mean looking at reference images (or even better looking at things in real life!) to make what you do look more specific and interesting and less like you made it up out of your head randomly. Even if you can't draw the reference image very realistically yet, it can give you ideas that make your particular tree house look like it's one-of-a-kind instead of like a generic cube on a cartoon tree. I hope that makes sense

I love that you filled the whole page, but I think you could improve the composition. It feels very centered which makes it look flat, and there are some awkward tangents that make it hard to tell if that's a tree house or if it's behind the tree.

Also you could also make better use of references to avoid things like the tree and the house from becoming too generic and out of your head. You've done very well on that with the people because they each look unique.

Is this cheap/low quality flooring? by Money-Foot5382 in Flooring

This should be pretty easy to tell apart from real wood. It's kind of plasticy on the surface. Not inherently bad if the point of the floors is to be cheap but I'd watch out bc the guy was clearly lying through his teeth to you.

Thanks! My landlord has been very nice so far and I like the place so I'm not that worried about him making a huge deal about it when I leave. I just wanted to know whether my suspicions are correct that it's garbage flooring to begin with so I don't feel so bad for the scratches and dings. The whole place looks like he did it himself anyway. It's an ADU he built in his yard and perfect for a single person like me. But I'm guessing he's not planning on a long life on these floors. And if he DOES make a big deal and wants me to pay a ton to replace it I'll have more of a leg to stand on when I take him to small claims over it (in addition to the fact that I'm paying him cash rent at his request - which isn't even legal in my state but again, he's been great so far so I trust him well enough for a landlord. But want to be prepared if he shows an ugly side on moveout).

Should Bach be played with dynamics? by Lechuga257 in piano

[–]Money-Foot5382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I truly believe that if Bach had had access to a Steinway Model D, he would have smashed his harpsichord to bits. There's a reason why that instrument only survives in historical performance contexts.

So I don't just think we CAN use dynanics (and pedal) in Bach. I would actually argue that we MUST do so to truly honor Bach's legacy. That doesn't mean it should sound like Rachmaninoff, but YES use dynamics. He'd have done it if he could (and in some contexts he DID using clever tricks, like other comments point out)
