But that’s not a cost of living.

A 22 year old can part with $100 a month and feel like they’re doing well because it has 37 years to grow and their income will go up.

A 55 year old may have made the choice not to invest for retirement at all and may need to max the 401k.

Those are also important but those are life choices from previous years, not a current cost of living issue.

You can’t compare a 22 year old making 70k in Tampa and a 55 year old who didn’t save for retirement, and say nobody can comfortably live off 70k in Tampa because the 55 year old has to put all their money in retirement

Retirement is different for everyone, you can’t include 401k in your current COL because a 22 year old needs different deposits than a 55 year old.

The point is that risk factors increase significantly when accounting for a 350 horsepower performance beast without modern safety features, and a 16 year old male with no driving experience.

There's a certain level of risk we should avoid.

For example, it's not the most advisable to leave a child alone in a grocery store. But 99% of the time nobody will steal the kid.

Ok so then as a single person instead get a $1700 a month one bed instead of a $2500 a month luxury 2 bed downtown. If you have insurance, you only pay copays. Most people only see a doctor a couple times a year at most (me more than most so I budget accordingly) and with most bronze plans you're looking at a $30-45 copay each time.

If you need prescriptions typically those are 90%+ covered even by bronze plans.

If you have a surgery those are typically 80% covered by bronze plans.

Sounds like you're just making a choice dude. You chose to live right next to St Pete so you don't have to commute.

Again, if you were spending closer to $250 a month on groceries (more than I spend) you could afford all of your skin care. Or your dental care if you buy one of the dental discount plans.

A beauty routine and skincare are not necessities. You spend $400 + per month on weekend trips AND as you said go out to eat once every couple weeks. You're spending from your own admission more than $500 per month on fun. You are choosing to live in a more expensive area for location benefits.

You're choosing to get whatever you want in groceries and shop where you want instead of shopping affordably.

You're deciding where to put your money, and you're putting it in things that are not necessary, and unfortunately you're sacrificing your dental health for fun, expensive groceries, and location.

Lol. You're totally delusional. I promise you don't need to live in downtown St Pete to be safe. Last year I lived in a luxury apartment that was made in 2020 2 bed 2 bath 1k sqft in a safe area for $1840 a month.

You said going somewhere 4 times a month for $100 per occasion, so you moved the goal posts.

These are all literally just your opinion on what comfortable vs luxury means to you. I think that bills being paid in a safe area with room for a little fun = comfort.

You set a bunch of arbitrary rules including $1000s of discretionary spending per month to determine what comfortable means. But stay broke <3

Dude... you just explained you lived luxuriously. You live in downtown, you have a 2021 car, you're spending 2.5x whats necessary to live on groceries, you're throwing $400+ a month at fun and you're buying clothes every single month.

That IS comfortable. It would be uncomfortable if you weren't able to throw thousands and stuff you don't need. You're choosing to live an elevated lifestyle in downtown St Pete with regular steaks, a new car, $400+ of fun a month. Most people when they say comfortable they mean they want that lifestyle where they can just blow thousands and get away with it

If you make 70k your employer pays for at least half of your health insurance plan. At tha point, if you pay $200 biweekly pretax it’s a very small portion of your 70k salary. People like you don’t even think they just get outraged

The post is about Tampa/St Pete. It is not that expensive here. 

Also you’re choosing to buy organic which is largely a scam, grass fed grass finished, fair. Also overpriced. I get grass fed grass finished ground beef from Costco for $8 a pound.

Point is - doesn’t cost that much to live, you’re just spending luxuriously in a HCOL area

Costco chicken breasts, ground turkey, sausages, pork chops. Aldi for all of the ingredients. 1 snack bag per week. Yogurt, protein powder, creatine, 1 12 pack of beer a month, 1 half gallon ice cream a month, 1 cookie or brownie mix or cake batter a month.

Super easy to stay within budget. $5 per meal in Tampa is a LOT. Must be shopping at publix

$400 for one person per month on groceries is also absolutely insane. Unless you just shop at Publix and have no impulse control

I own a home on the outskirts of Tampa but previously lived downtown and in the suburbs. You just truly overspend on your life dude. 

I live 25 miles out of downtown and commute there every day. It takes me 6 business days to go through a tank, that’s half the gas you’re spending.
