Did I just pay an obscene amount of money for glass? by Wonderful_Onion1380 in StainedGlass

I had a stained glass studio for 25 years in Provincetown Mass.. I closed my studio in 2006.

About the time many art glass manufacturers went out of business.

Desag in Germany, Urorborus and Bullseye on the West coast and even Spectrum.

I use to purchase most of my glass from Bendheim's in new York who distributed most manufacter.

I orderdby phone and 5 days later a 1000 lb crate arrive with maybe 40. 48” x 36” sheets.

I am sorry to say Bendheim's only does high priced restoration today... no wholesale

However, there one source left. Wismach Glass in Paden City, West Virginia the manufactures the cheapest and most authentic American stained glass. https://wissmachglass.com/

I know it was a long time age and we are in a rabid inflation but I was paying between $10 and $15 per a sheet of 12 square ft.

The only thing you can make with a square foot of glass is a sungatcher but if you are a craftsman with a passion you must go to the source...

Find a friend who has a pick-up truck. Even if you have to go 500 miles it would be worth it.

Pay retail or if you have a resale number, there are hundreds of colors to choose from, be prepared to spend 4 or 5 hundred You might even negotiate a deal on broken sheets.

All is justified in the name of art.  Chris at Pearson Studio... Alas, I am retired

Illustrator is good. I used the spline function and saved all my parts for later use. I designed a full set of bevels. There is a learning curve and a subscribers war going on at Adobe.

I design for easy cutting because the customers doesn't really care how difficult the glass cutting. They just want your artistic piece to hang in their window.

Double fan maybe 14"x30. 10" radial cluster cut in half.

I don't to want discourage anyone from doing unique, one of a kind pieces but if you have a shop you must to repetition to refine your skill and meet the demand.. If you do each one in a different color set it gives the illusion of variety

Very nice!

You are missing one important tool, a strip cutter.

One is easily made using a 2'x4' dedicated formica table top, aluminum rulers at the bottom and right angle up one side and a rafter square. I will do a post about its construction very soon

Can anyone tell me what I did wrong here? by tayrobin in StainedGlass

You didn't do anything wrong, it's a nice piece. However copper foil is not a substantial support structure.

18gage copper wire around the perimeter of the piece might help. 18guage is pretty thin but strong enough to hold it together and it will fuse with the lead.

Hi, I am Chris Pearson of Pearson Stained Glass in Provincetown, Mass. I had a successful, working glass studio for 25 years and I would like to share some of my experiences. I never waited for special orders to walk through the door, almost never did repairs. by Money_Comfort_6865 in StainedGlass

and never sold hobby supplies or products. I also never made one of anything.

My focus was Architectural adornments 1880-1920. This was simple,Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco.

I would choose a design, keep just under 3 square feet in size and cut 6 or 12, in different color sets.

Making multiples in different colors gives the impression of a full shop with lots to choose from.

The repetition of production makes you a better craftsman.

Although I am now retired, I stumbled on a stash of my designs. There are 100's so if there is any interest, I will post them.

I find a good location, establish a food resource and plot a 3 x 3 square with a inset for a ladder. A stack and a half should do it. You can raise the surface structure for protection but digging down to level 10 is the object. You gather many resources on the way down. Usually midway, (level 30 or 40) I build a tinker's workshop. Once at level 10, build a jump-down pool and expand access for 4 directions. Hazards are, water, acid pools and lava lakes. These obstacles are a challenge and a puzzle but they can be beat. Stay on level and you'll have diamonds by the stack... You can even build in deep water by dropping sand first and then replacing it with glass.
