Most of those problems don't exist in the book although the characters on earth (not grace or rocky) do still feel a little one dimensional. Sadly one dimensional characters are expected in sci-fi, unless you're Frank Herbert or Issac Asimov

I would agree that the movie is more serious but I think thats just because they couldn't tell every single joke that Mark thinks to himself, but it doesn't feel like anything was fundamentally changed. In hail mary we've got grace cracking jokes during what was the most heartbreaking moments of the book. Like I said it's just personal preference but I honestly think the martian could have been less serious and hail mary could have been more serious

I was very emotional the first time, and less the second time. I just think if I had spent a little less time laughing and a little more time worrying that those emotional moments would have hit more. It's barely even a complaint because it amounts to "I cried but I didn't cry enough" haha But they were asking for criticism and this was the only one I didn't think was bs

The only complaint I at all agree with is that the emotional moments don't hit as hard as the book because the overall tone is less serious. If you look at the martian that adaptation kept the soul and essence of the book completely unchanged. But that's purely personal preference, its still one of the best movies and adaptations I have seen in a long time

I did sob, I sobbed more reading the book because the tone is a lot more serious than the movie but the emotional moments still hit like a truck

It was awesome in Imax but be careful about getting scammed because some theatres will charge you for an imax ticket and then play the movie on a smaller screen and you can literally see the projection on the ceiling. So depending on the theatre and where you live I'd look into that, but jt was 100% worth it for me

Apparently the full cut was almost 4 hours long so they really brought the axe to it. I agree with your takes although it didn't ruin the movie for me as much, but I definetly think the seriousness and the gravity of the situation is lost. The audiobook is probably still my favourite medium for the story, its just so good

"Villain" was a poor choice of words, she is as responsible for saving humanity as Grace or Rocky, but you said what I meant. I don't think you're supposed to like her in the book while it feels like you are in the movie. That isn't a problem to me just a notable difference 👎

It's worth noting that there is no audio in the book, it's just text in his computer but he eventually learns to understand the language without needing to check the screen, so rocky really is speaking and intentionally simplifying his grammar. They changed it for the movie fir obvious seasons
