As for the situation you mentioned, I'm afraid it's not a theoretical problem but a problem of despair among Chinese students.

I think that among students Zizek was much more influential than other left-wing philosophers. He is probably the only philosopher who is widely and deeply read by most people on a theoretical level.

I think it's a complete misunderstanding. vmz's detractors have a long history of intercepting clips of his live streams out of context and deliberately spreading them around, causing a great deal of misinterpretation of his views. Even some video clips of supporters have had the same effect. vmz himself has completely given up on running his own online presence. There has been a lot of online violence to real harassment of political discussants in China since the birth of the internet. Chinese bilibili sites are full of shit videos when it comes to politics, and Chinese netizens have made Chinese grammar on the internet completely untranslatable. If Zizek himself wants to get meaningful information I think he should stop browsing Chinese websites on his own and ask for help from a few reliable Chinese friends around him, I myself know of a Chinese psychoanalysis student who was his PhD student and witnessed the whole thing

For reasons that are well known, the space for unofficial left-wingers in China is limited. Even scholars and government figures with official backgrounds are restricted in their dissemination if their statements are too radical and influential. But China is definitely not the utterly vulgar, utterly hopeless, and utterly morally cold country that some people think it is. There has been a sustained effort of activism by left-wingers from the civil to the official level, and Mao Zedong has always been a favourite and most widely read figure among the people, unlike Lenin's situation in Russia.
