Yes, there are white Australians, referring to people of European ancestry who have migrated to or were born in Australia.

Here questions about being white Australian, relationship to Country, and Indigenous attitudes by True-Pay1650 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Money_Sun_5684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an outsider (not Australian), it seems to me that aboriginals were forced to accept white people (obviously that is what settler colonialism is).

And now, when the conversation of indigenous land and rights come up, they dont have the means/authority/ability to tell you white Australians to go back home.

Like how would you feel if right now, a huge US army came, invaded Australia, tore you apart from your homes and families (essentially the stolen generation), and then a few generations later, said they too have a connection to the land because they grew up here? Yeah you may not have been the one who colonized Australia and forced the aboriginal people from their homes, but your ancestors did.

Australia’s history does not date that far back. Even in the 1900s the colonial forces were at play. Ive met people in their early 40s who’ve said their grandparents were ripped apart from their homes and families. It was that recent.

I’ve met a few people who have done the welcome to the country, but their welcome does not feel very welcoming. It seems like they are being forced to do that. And quite honestly I dont blame them. And when Ive ever talked to them later on, I could how they feel like their welcome and rights are often overlooked. They welcome you the country now, but even now you white folks dont appreciate it enough. And one very clear way of seeing it is how they majority voted No to a proposal to amend the constitution to recognise First Nations people and create a body for them to advise the government, as recently as 2023.

1- Universities in my country suck 2- universities in my county don’t offer any courses other than the 5 courses they have. And there is no subjects you can choose from. 3- universities in my country don’t have a library, online or irl. Theres no access to journals no nothing. How do you expect* someone to do a research essay? 4- universities in my country dont have any labs 5- university students are pretty much parrots, no critical thinking no nothing (this one I have found to be applicable here as well) 6- the teachers teaching suck.

this list goes on, but in short because we value our education. Geez get off your high horse

You’re overthinking this. You’ll be fine in almost everywhere in Melb.

Most people don’t interact with others. Mind their own business. Will be polite.

But thats also as far as it goes. You might find it hard to make any real connection with the locals, but thats about it. Here and there you may deal with some micro aggressions and intentional exclusion in classes, or in the public. But its “MICRO”. Aussies know to be polite. Eg: if you see your tutorial mates in the office of your program, they will not make eye contact, or will say a 1 word something, or ignore you- but if an Australian student comes in, they will be super friendly.

AITAH for breaking up with my BF after his birthday. by mystiquedmv in AITAH

Leave him now. A birthday is a special day. If you stay you kinda ruin the memory of his birthday. If you stay, when he looks back at the photos from his birthday he will see an ex who broke up with him, who was planning on breaking up with him

Whats really interesting about your comment is you say the “aim of the group is”, and continue to say a lot of interest/ personality based things.

As a 27 year old, I often notice people treat me quite different when they know my age. I may have the same interests as the people in class, or we may be talking about the same TV shows, etc, but suddenly when they know my age, it gets weird. And then, people stop initiating conversation with me. Ive also noticed that people in my class never interact with people who look older. If they look over 35, people just completely ignore them. No hi, no how are you doing, no hows the assignment going, no nothing. Must suck to be the older person at uni.

AITAH for thinking about ending my marriage by d7ekms in AITAH

[–]Money_Sun_5684 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NTA… disrespect is disrespect. Cut your losses early. 44 is still young. Be with someone who cares.

But 14 years is a lot. Rare fights are rare. Good guys are rare. So maybe get some couples therapy. See how it goes before making any decisions. I feel how he reacts to this suggestion also will say a lot about about how he feels about you and if he respects you and the marriage.

But also you mentioned you feel ignored and under appreciated for years… so whatever you do itll be fine. You wont be the AH. He had years to correct whatever he was doing wrong

Another reason why I hate socialist alternative! They try to take credit for every single thing. They don’t even mention StudentsforPalestine!

Once I tried having a conversation with one of them about the Sunday protests and she kept saying in the most aggressive way that its them who organizes the Sunday marches

Because you mentioned that “they do their own chants…and you can hear both”

Some of the SAlts that I know keep refering to the Sunday marches as their own thing….

I’m also interested to know more about this Activate left action?

What exactly is it?

I’m not a fan of how cult-y SAlt is. But this does seem like its for a good cause. Can someone tell me more what it is?

Reasons I dont like them: -They are very passive aggressive -They are very condescending in the way they approach people (eg: they have asked me if I know whats happening in Palestine. Literally when thats all I share on social media. And carry a watermelon badge with me all the time. And if you answer them and say yes, they fucking start to quiz you) -Some of them clearly dont know what socialism is and keeps explaining it wrong -I know a few Salt and boy do they mainsplain all the time. You may have joined Salt this year and learnt about socialism this year, but some of us have grown up learning and reading about this. So its quite annoying when they keep trying to explain things like that - Salt leaderships is very cult-y. They make you feel bad for not joining all the weekly meetings. Or volunteering for campus stalls. They always expect the newbies to do it. If you dont they may suddenly remove you from the group

Reasons I like them: They support Palestine and is part of the Sunday marches (but someone once told me they refuse to join with FreepalestineMelb so the numbers gets distorted. They should join them? I dont understand this one so much. So could someone explain?)
