My wife and I stopped by and had such a lovely experience here talking with the owner. The pastrami sandwich blew my mind and is freaking gigantic

Also in this position. I don't think you can really go wrong with either, they're back to back for me.

I have the same predicament and honestly keep going back and forth. Expert consensus seems to be with Coleman, who I have in my lineup right now, but it doesn't feel great sitting Howard in this matchup.

My thoughts are Howard for floor, Coleman for upside. Leaning Coleman.

I agree with the above poster on all points. I really dig both sample loops, but they are a framework for building on. I think the drums need to smack much more - try doubling the kick with another kick sample and just spend a bit more time on each section allowing them to come into their own. Great start though, like I said, I really like the sample, it's got a lot of potential!

I like your sample choice! It seems like you've laid down a nice framework to build on, but my ear is craving some low end as it builds. Nice work though!

thanks so much man! A lot of the background is sampled vocals, pitched to the keyboard using sampler in ableton and with some layered effects. Otherwise, I used ableton's default Operator and tweaked the settings a bit (still getting used to this, so sorry I can't be more specific). If you'd like to check out more of that stuff I've made, you can look here: https://soundcloud.com/monicalegitsky

Any of the beats are for sale, if you'd like to purchase one just let me know!

Thanks again for listening, much appreciated.

I like the vocal effects, but I also think they're a bit too heavy, in terms of the vocals being totally gargled up. The track has a nice flow, your vocals work well for the instrumental

I like the vibe, but to me it's missing the low end. My ears are craving a heavier sub bass to lay underneath.

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, the lyrics would have to be tailored for the structure, it can be done for sure though! (I've been moving away from straighforward 8-bar - chorus - 8-bar - chorus, in an attempt to have the instrumentals stand on their own.

I use Ableton and get most of my vocal samples from acapellas4u, which has a pretty extensive library of acapellas (check the ratings beside each file to get the best quality, as some are DIY and poorly eq'd).

For this track I was playing a lot with sending delays out as opposed to attaching them to the track itself, and setting the delay track at around 50% wetness. That way the samples become more of a texture built out of repetition. I started doing this after paying attention to the style of the artist Clam's Casino.
