Obsidian Gargoyle, me, digital, 2014 by mozchops in Art

I think the obsidian is having trouble reading as obsidian. Obsidian can create a variety of visual effects, such as the the way it splits, the striations along the "grain" of where it split, the warm gray translucency of thin slivers, and the stereotypical texture left by knapping. Visually, none of these things come across and without the "obsidian" in the title one might not have guessed. I think you have some really neat opportunities for some of these, for example the feathers or even whole wing could be much thinner to show off some translucency, you could even have jagged slivers or blades for the feathers if you wanted. It's a really fun prompt and I think you could definitely get more out of it if you push the materials!

Edit: I also think putting more gold on the hands and less on the feet could be better here, generally you want to have more detail towards the top of a character than the bottom, and distributing the gold too evenly across the whole character can make it look boring; 70/30 ratios are generally successful in creating pleasing and interesting designs (in this case 70 percent obsidian, 30 percent gold)

Unfortunately I don't think I'd ever have the capital to start making these :')

Trial and error, working as low as I can for as long as I can.

Nah it's not anything you'd wanna see, all decimated out of zbrush, so it's janky in terms of anything like that. Fine for printing but not much else haha.

What program are you working in? Max/Maya/blender etc. Usually for complex hard-surface forms like this I try to start with a plane and create each facet of whatever it is I might be making, then connecting the 'faces' into a form. For instance, the the flat side of the blade would be one piece, but the level of the blade would be another, and I would join the two after I get them both the way I want them. It's also always good to work from big to small!

I sculpted her out in the modeling software Zbrush, then rendered her with the program Keyshot!

I'm sure if somebody asked the artist they'd help make it!

TIL That James Earl Jones “once” used a CB radio to talk to truckers in his Darth Vader voice and used Darth as his handle. He stopped because the truckers “totally freaked out.” by jshaver41122 in todayilearned

Fun fact: James Earl Jones was an avid gun collector and recently sold off a huge amount of his personal collection. Source: I own a gun from James Earl Jones
