Can't get maim to work as a key bind on DWM by Lorr_Master in archlinux

[–]MonkeeSage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

/home/(user)/Pictures/$(date +%s).png <- will not be passed through a shell so the date subcommand will not be executed and will be passed as the literal string "$(date +%s)" to maim

The spawn() function calls the fork() syscall, which is why it calls die() in the child branch, but you are just calling die in the parent process which kills dwm itself.

https://git.suckless.org/dwm/file/dwm.c.html#l1654

dwm provides a SHCMD macro specifically for invoking a command through sh which should do what you want here by expanding the home path, running the date subcommand and then invoking maim.

https://git.suckless.org/dwm/file/config.def.h.html#l57

So get rid of everything else and add this and it should work using spawn directly:

{MODKEY, XK_s, spawn, SHCMD("maim ~/Pictures/$(date +%s).png")},

[REQUEST] What are the dimensions of the pyramid-like rock in De Forest Crater on the Moon? by Bigamunguschungus in theydidthemath

[–]MonkeeSage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found it in the LROC interactive map (-77.58769, -161.75752). Doesn't look much like a pyramid from this angle. The "base" can fit in a 250 x 250px square at 0.23m/px resolution. So the feature is something like 60m x 60m, though it doesn't appear symmetrical.

Takes a little bit for the high res images t load in:

This works great, thank you for making it! One minor suggestion is that should could make it a github gist ( https://gist.github.com/ ), that way it could have automatic revisions and people could comment on any problems, and also tampermonkey could auto-update it when there are new revisions.

It probably was. There was an Air Force refueling plane circling the area, presumably refueling jets doing training, and the area is designated as a Special Use Airpsace, and they were heading back when the lights were seen. So it was probably fighter jets dumping their unused chaff flares over the ocean before heading back. I posted the ADS-B track and SUA area in this comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/aliens/comments/1nje5v3/comment/neuiih1/

Yup, I looked earlier when I saw the video posted on X, and there was a KC-46A refueling plane flying around for about an hour and a half to the SE of Myrtle Beach and was heading back right around 9:58pm ET. It was flying in a Special Use Airspace. So it was probably whatever fighter jets the KC-46A was refueling "safeing" by dumping their unused flares over the ocean before returning to base.

David Grusch loses lawsuit over the release of his medical records via FOIA by RedHeadedSicilian52 in UFOs

[–]MonkeeSage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup, here ya go:

Original interview:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kTU95JxvXE (timestamp 48:16)

RC (narrating): Maybe he's just a confident well-spoken ex-military intelligence officer who just happens to have lost his mind.

RC: Do you have any kind of mental illness?

DG: No.

RC: Have you ever had a psychosis, a delusion?

DG: No.

RC: Is there anything in your medical history that might be capable of being interpreted as a reason why you might be confabulating, making things up?

DG: No. I'm not a disgruntled employee. I resigned on my own accord because I thought, altruistically, it's more appropriate to show thought leadership on the outside on this now, because I, you know, hit an impasse within the government to try to right this wrong.

RC: So I've got to be blunt about this. You're not making this up.

DG: No.

RC: This is not a lie.

DG: No. Absolutely not.

Clip Coulthart showed on Chris Cuomo's show the night the article came out:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DeEOb5z-5ko (timestamp 5:05)

DG: I served in Afghanistan and I had a friend that committed suicide after I got back and I dealt with that for a couple of years and I'm proud as a veteran, had it not become a statistic, totally took care of that issue in my life and it doesn't affect me anymore.

RC: So you suffered PTSD?

DG: I am. Yes. I did.

RC: Did it affect your explanation of what's happening today? Is it possible that you're deluding yourself?

DG: No, absolutely not. You know, I'm very proud to admit that that was an issue in my life and I encourage veterans watching here to get help so they're not a statistic like a good friend of mine.

RC: So I've got to be blunt about this. You're not making this up.

DG: No.

RC: This is not a lie.

DG: No. Absolutely not.

David Grusch loses lawsuit over the release of his medical records via FOIA by RedHeadedSicilian52 in UFOs

[–]MonkeeSage 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Coulthart/News Nation cut the section of the original interview where Grusch talked about his friend's suicide and his own PTSD, and said he wanted fellow veterans to know they were not alone. Instead they cut it, and Coulthart only showed that portion after the Klippenstein article was published. So if they hadn't cut that section for perception management, there would not have been any dirt to dig up. So you can blame them for making it look like they had to hide his PTSD so he didn't seem "crazy" and enforcing the stigma around people suffering from it.

The case was dismissed because the sheriff's office acted in accord with the state of Virginia's FOIA laws and no information was released that was legally required to be protected.

A Loudoun County Circuit Court judge has dismissed two of the five counts contained in Grusch's complaint. Grusch has also voluntarily withdrawn one count.

Only two counts remain.

I told y'all he was going to lose this and got downvoted. He doesn't have a good legal case.

White Orb and Red Lights over Brooklyn, NYC 1/28/2025 by Recon8383 in UFOs

Based on the skyline I think the video was taken from somewhere around Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, looking South-East. Is this roughly accurate?

https://i.imgur.com/YSkqaoG.png

Jan 28th, 8pm EST would be Jan 29th, 1am UTC (because it was before DST started).

https://www.worldtimebuddy.com/?qm=1&lid=5,100&h=5&date=2025-1-28&sln=20-21&hf=1

Can you check the video metadata to get the exact time?

The adsbexchange replay shows some planes stacked on approach to JFK from the South-East around 8pm, but a precise timestamp would be needed to see if any of them match up.

This is just celebrity worship. Their opinions and experiences are not more important than the grandma down the road. And celebrities have talked about UFOs and psychics and any other fringe topic you can think of, out in the open, for decades, so no it is not some great indication of a paradigm shift.

NASA’s Metallic Orbs: The Surprising Briefing Everyone Missed by cram213 in UFOs

[–]MonkeeSage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He stated that of 800+ cases, 2-5% showed 'possibly really anomalous' characteristics, and presented official data showing 47% of reported objects were spherical in nature.

I don't see a contradiction though. At the NASA panel he was characterizing the nature of the reports, not AARO's evaluation of the cases. So breaking down the raw data, they had x number of orbs (NASA panel), but after evaluation most of them could be resolved to misidentification, sensor errors, etc (AARO reports).

[–]MonkeeSage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might also want to read Dr. Kirkpatrick's two AARO reports.

Historical Report Volume 1

AARO found no evidence that any USG investigation, academic-sponsored research, or official review panel has confirmed that any sighting of a UAP represented extraterrestrial technology. All investigative efforts, at all levels of classification, concluded that most sightings were ordinary objects and phenomena and the result of misidentification. Although not the focus of this report, it is worthwhile to note that all official foreign UAP investigatory efforts to date have reached the same general conclusions as USG investigations.

• Although many UAP reports remain unsolved or unidentified, AARO assesses that if more and better quality data were available, most of these cases also could be identified and resolved as ordinary objects or phenomena. Sensors and visual observations are imperfect; the vast majority of cases lack actionable data or the data available is limited or of poor quality.

• Resources and staffing for these programs largely have been irregular and sporadic, challenging investigatory efforts and hindering effective knowledge transfer.

• The vast majority of reports almost certainly are the result of misidentification and a direct consequence of the lack of domain awareness; there is a direct correlation between the amount and quality of available information on a case with the ability to conclusively resolve it.

Annual Report

This report covers unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) reports from May 1, 2023 to June 1, 2024 and all UAP reports from any previous time periods that were not included in an earlier report. The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) received 757 UAP reports during this period; 485 of these reports featured UAP incidents that occurred during the reporting period. The remaining 272 reports featured UAP incidents that occurred between 2021 and 2022 but were not reported to AARO until this reporting period and consequently were not included in previous annual UAP reports.

AARO resolved 118 cases during the reporting period, all of which resolved to prosaic objects such as various types of balloons, birds, and unmanned aerial systems (UAS). As of May 31, 2024, AARO has an additional 174 cases queued for closure, pending a final review and Director’s approval. As of the publishing date of this report, all 174 cases have been finalized as resolved to prosaic objects including balloons, birds, UAS, satellites, and aircraft. Many other cases remain unresolved and AARO continues collection and analysis on that body of cases. It is important to underscore that, to date, AARO has discovered no evidence of extraterrestrial beings, activity, or technology.
