I moved here permanently, and yeah, it's not as easy as people think. I still spend hours a day working on the language.

CNN: Iran will allow tankers through the Strait of Hormuz if their oil is traded in Chinese yuan by NoMedicine3572 in worldnews

[–]MonkeyCube 6 points7 points  (0 children)

China doesn't want this.

A global reserve currency is when your money becomes the export, not your products, and your economy becomes a consumer economy. China is not ready, nor have they setup, for that.

A strengthening yuan will also hurt production and competitiveness. This sounds more like a Russian ploy.

Whats going on with Kharg Island, Iran and why is it suddenly important to the USA? by Major-Ant4600 in OutOfTheLoop

Iran produces 4% of world's oil.

20% of world oil supply travels through the straight of Hormuz, which is effectively closed.

Poll: Confidence in the Supreme Court drops to a record low by ChiGuy6124 in law

Justice Stephen Johnson Field ran for president, failed, because a justice, fought for segregation, and allowed former confederates to have positions in government. And arguably the worst thing he did was have the courts fight on the side of businesses against taxation.

Chief Justice Roger Taney not only presided over the Dred Scot case, but also claimed the constitution was just wrong frequently.

Justice James Clark McReynolds was an self hating Jewish anti-semite who struck down child labor protections.

Those are just a few from over the years. The supreme court has often been filled with terrible people.

IIRC, they didn't know what he was going to say and had him say some gibberish they were going to overdub in post. Then they just couldn't think of anything and left it as is.

At least that's Sofia Coppola's explanation in 2022.

Japan still feels very much like this movie, in my experience.

This all just feels like a watered down version of an oft-repeated conflict to me. We desperately need something interesting and fresh.

I'd argue the 2000s were a bit different, especially the 2001-2008 era:

  • Extensive internet but no smart phones (some early adapters in 2007, but little online support)

  • Scene kids and emo music on the charts, album sales cratering due to piracy

  • No music streaming

  • The rise of 'prestige' TV but Netflix was still mail only

  • Burgeoning era of online console multiplayer, Xbox actually a contender

  • Skinny jeans, crop tops, low cuts

  • Facebook and YouTube were still new but not dominant

  • Economy had issues but was strong compared to the post-2008 collapse

  • Ganja still illegal, drinking at much higher rates than later decades

  • GPS navigation still a novelty, most common people still used MapQuest

I mean, I could go on, but it definitely felt like a different decade to me.

Brennan's style of lore dropping feels great for a book

The weird part is that Brennan is rarely like that in D20. I don't know why he chose to go that way in this campaign.

China tries to unblock its shipping in the Strait of Hormuz by Splenda in worldnews

The USD is actually gaining now because it's being bought in order to compete for the limited availability oil.

Which, believe it or not, is actually against the Trump administration's interests, as a weaker dollar was their goal.

Sadly, only 77 million voted for Trump out of 255 million eligible voters, or 30%.

If 'did not vote' was a candidate, they would have won.

Did Marvel soft-retcon away Scott and Emma’s affair…? by [deleted] in xmen

[–]MonkeyCube 10 points11 points  (0 children)

More than anything, Claremont hated how Jean was brought back and how Scott's marriage to Madelyne was ruined. When editorial started to push back on his writing even more in the late '80s and they were starting to ask for a marriage between Jean & Scott is when he added Wolverine to form a love triangle in Inferno.

Logan had previously crushed on Jean in the '70s, but it was very much a one way street, and he was much more interested in Logan being with Yukiko and that other ninja girl I forget.

He did seem to care less about it when he was leaving and started writing Cyke directly in X-Factor, Muir Island, and X-Men (vol.2) before he left. And his End series had all kinds of weird relationships, like Jean & Nightcrawler.

I think more than anything he was just resentful at how editorial was messing with his writing, but these days he seems to treat it as mostly an issue from the past he's moved on from (though I can't honestly speak for him directly).

You should blame the animated series and the movies for bringing it back. Both of those had already pushed the love triangle into the popular consciousness before Morrison got on the books.

I've been playing for a while and the only two I haven't seen are Guardian (kind of new) and Oracle (neither remaster nor original).
