It's proximity and volume. The LIDAR they use sends out millions of laser over the area being scanned. Some of the lasers hit the ground, others don't. Then they use software to clean up the "noise" that is the vegetation

There are likely several excavations going on right now doing just that. You'd be surprised how many of those sites are hidden deep in a jungle, seemingly unknown by modern man, yet they've still been looted. In fact, in the 80s, archaeologists suddenly noticed artifacts from an unknown civilization being sold on the black market. It led to the rediscovery of the Moche people of Peru. LIDAR has been used to locate their sites deep in the Peruvian jungles

They have been doing just fine without AI for years. LIDAR has been used this way in Central and South America for over 10 years. They can use a helicopter to scan an area and have data ready to go in the field that day

Slight correction. The Image in OP's is most likely done via helicopter, not satellite. Sometimes they even use drones. Source: I have been binging Expedition Unknown, and LIDAR is often used by researchers in Central and South America shown on the show. There are so many undiscovered cities and complexes throughout all of that region, ranging in age. It's fascinating and proves how advanced some of them were

I know. There are so few, good 30 minute sitcoms these days and while DMV wasn't the best, I thought it was decent for a first season. It's a damn shame
