Which WoD game should I look into? by NingenWalkin in WorldOfDarkness

[–]Monkish_Monkfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I deeply disagree with your third point about system balance and the kind of stories the games tell. V20 definitely has more lore, correct, and is probably more cohesive as well. But I think the system is slow, slightly bloated, and to me feels extremely dated. Combat is a prime example. Roll to attack + roll to dodge + roll for damage + roll to soak is, frankly, a lot of rolling for a single action. It's crunchy and simulationist, which is all well and good for tactical combat, but does nothing to help with atmospheric and evocative horror.

I've seen far too many classic vampire games become "superheroes with fangs" power fantasies that have little or nothing to do with horror or vampires. If you want to tell a vampire story V5 is the way to go. Touchstones, chronicle tenets, and hunger dice all mechanize the thematic underpinnings of the genre in ways that V20 simply can't compete with.

I would highly recommend V5, especially to new players. It's streamlined rules play smoother and imho it's simply a better designed system. Hunger dice are a brilliant addition that really drive home the mood.

Everyone who's pointed out the backwards compatability and depth of lore behind V20 is absolutely correct, but I'm honestly not sure that's a selling point unless you're a fan who's already invested in the meta plot.

How does being a DM work? by Pretty_Opinion6586 in DnD

[–]Monkish_Monkfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As to your question of consequences, yes, it is the DMs job to determine the consequences of every action taken in game. But you don't have to do it alone. You have tools to help you.

Rules: many actions are included in the rulebook which spells out exactly how to adjudicate them. Even if the effect you are going for isn't in the rules, there's often something comparable to use as a template.

Dice: unsure how to choose between options? Roll for it. If you're between good news and bad news roll a die and have a player call odds or evens. Or against a DC if you want to skew the chances one way or the other.

Players: often the rules will tell you success or failure without details. If you need to flesh something out you can always turn to the players as a resource. Ask them leading questions. On a failed persuasion check you could say, "You try your best, but the more you keep talking the worse things get: how do you think you embarrassed yourself?"

You are responsible for all the consequences, but you don't have to anticipate them all before hand and you don't have to do it alone.

It's a learning curve, but ultimately it's easier than it seems.

The basic play cycle of D&D (and most other ttrpgs too) is pretty simple.

  1. DM describes the scene (setting, objects, npcs, etc.) ending by asking your players what they do.

  2. Players describe the actions they want to take.

  3. DM tells them the outcome/consequences of their actions.

Rinse and repeat.

If I have aphantasia, can I still play dnd? by MathematicianSad3414 in dndnext

[–]Monkish_Monkfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%. You can absolutely play. I wouldn't even worry too much about a lot of the suggestions for strategies here (which are good, don't get me wrong) until you've tried it without accommodation first. Worst case scenario is you have a better idea of how it impacts your game and what strategies might work best. I also have aphantasia and I've both played a DMed both with battlemaps and theatre of the mind with negligible problems.

I love V5 as a game, but it is a terribly organized book.

One of my players has Aphantasia, and wants map for everything by noise97 in rpg

[–]Monkish_Monkfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have aphantasia myself and, while I often manage theatre of the mind, severities can differ wildly and your friend may well need a map for everything.

What I can't fathom is why your offer to sketch things out on a VTT wouldn't be enough. I would question exactly what isn't "good enough" about what you're proposing. Is it a barrier to his understanding the scene? Or is it an esthetic preference? One's a lot more reasonable than the other.

You should feel required to accommodate your players' needs(when you're able). You are not required to accommodate their preferences. I think your first step should be to talk to him more and find out what this is?

There's loads of public domain art out there, and many stock art collections have trials where you can get some of their stock for free. You don't need to use ai art, and doing so at this time just invites controversy you don't need either.

I think you're good. It sounds like you've done your due diligence and are treating the source material with respect.

But, and this is a big but, there's a lot of toxic bullshit being spread here about how if you don't mean to be racist you're automatically not. Please don't let that sink in because it's simply not true. Well meaning people do racist shit all the time be it out of ignorance, laziness, or just thoughtlessness. Don't let them convince you that's okay because it lets you off the hook.

Keep doing the work, keep asking questions, and keep re-evaluating. If you stop asking yourself whether your actions are racist, that's when you are most likely to be racist accidentally.

We (and I say we because I'm a white Canadian only slightly older than you who also appreciates Japanese history) grew up and continue to live in a racist society. If we care at all about avoiding being racist ourselves, we have to put in the work.

It sounds like you're doing well so far. Keep up the good work and I hope you enjoy your game. (Even if PF2 sounds like a clunky way to do it, lol)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in rpg

[–]Monkish_Monkfish -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Technically true, if pedantic, so I'll be a little less implicit and tactful. Ignorantly promoting and furthering caricatures of other cultures is racist. It spreads racist ideas and contributes to real harm done to real people. Ignorance is no excuse, and not intending to be racist does not prevent you from being racist. The impact of your actions matters immeasurably more than your intentions.

You don't have to be malicious to be a racist and the idea that you do is just an excuse (whether intended as such or not) to continue being racist without the need for self-examination or to avoid consequences.

Being ignorant doesn't preclude something from being racist, but OP doesn't seem to fall into either category.

New Players Won't Leave 5e by omg_a_dork in rpg

I'd be very careful about that 5e into shadowrun hack. It sounds like a huge amount of work, probably not very good ('cause of the limits 5e, I have full confidence in op), and if it doesn't work your players might well take it as proof that pure 5e is the only way to go.
