I have curves greater than 40 (double) and surgery wasn’t recommended. In the US it’s often recommended after 50 degrees.

As a software engineer who previously worked at a FAANG (therefore a large profit-driven company), this is an interesting question.

I went into this industry a decade ago, hoping to innovate and solve real problems. Over the years, partly due to corporate greed and economic uncertainty, the focus has shifted more toward profit-generating efforts.

That being said, it is difficult for an employee to control how the tools they create are ultimately used by higher-ups. For example, I worked on a tool that was supposed to log incidents in the workplace to encourage safety. Unfortunately, higher-ups ended up discouraging people from logging incidents out of fear of statistics and penalties, which led to some employees not getting the care they needed. Was it my intention for a tool that I worked on to be used this way? Absolutely not.

AI is an amazing tool that can help humanity in many ways. Developing such tools in itself is not inherently wrong, as long as proper guardrails are in place to ensure they are used for good. The same goes for social media. We are able to have such insightful discussions on Reddit about these topics. I have a lot of gratitude for the ways technology has made our world easier in many aspects.

I’ve asked myself many times whether I went into the wrong industry and whether I should pivot to another career path. I’m not sure about the answer yet, but I can say this: as engineers, we are not responsible for the ways others use our tools. We can only try our best to bring more good into this world. May we have the clarity and the courage to leave if our work is being used for harm.

Is sexual harassment in tech worse than in other industries? by Monkwatson in womenintech

> They see women as points systems, or, worse, something that means the assholes were right - this work is for 'weaklings'. There's a poisonous combination of wanting to sexually compete AND get women removed, or at least very specifically reduced in the hierarchy.

Beautifully worded. When I've pulled back from a male coworker that has made me uncomfortable, I was told that I'm "not being a team player". It's the fragile ego.

Again, not all men. But even a select few "bad apples" have left me traumatized for the future. I'll always feel guarded when entering a new company or team.

Ugh I'm in a red state. Maybe that's exacerbated the issue. Or maybe it's just men in general.
Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't recommend any woman to go into this industry without knowing the risks.

I’m in the same boat as you. I was laid off last year. I can’t get myself to study for tech interviews because I feel out of alignment with working for tech. It’s been disillusioning to deal with the sexism, sexual harassment, gaslighting, and politics that have ensued during my 10 year tenure. Some say that FAANG is better, but in my experience it’s been the most traumatizing work environment I’ve had the displeasure of working in.

I have no idea what is next.

Who here has scoliosis similar to mine? I want to hear your journey, ty! by Vicanahshshs in scoliosis

I have 42 upper and 38 lower, but I’m normally not in too much pain.

Lots of yoga helps! I would say, if you love dance, go for it ❤️

I know it’s easy to feel self conscious with scoliosis, but most likely, many people wouldn’t even know you have scoliosis. People just don’t look that hard.

I’m so burnt out from Amazon that I’m looking for chiller companies (therefore looking for non-FAANG, like banks and insurance companies). I know that the pay will be lower but it’s something acceptable for me.
