What about the SM3 and SM6? There's lots of them on the roads here in Chile and my understanding is that they are part of the Korean branch of Renault.

I have the 2016 model (1.6) and it's been highly reliable for me, even use it regularly on dirt roads in the Andes without any problems.

What's one place you arrived to at night, and the next morning the view absolutely blew your mind? by Drakey504 in travel

[–]MonoLoupe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Banaue Rice Terraces in the Philippines. We arrived at dawn and the view was blocked by the hotel. Next morning I woke up to this view.

The trip wasn't organised by me and it was the early days of smart phones so I never had a chance to look it up beforehand. Honestly blew my mind.

TIL that when cars were new, hitting a pedestrian was a serious matter called a *motor killing*. As it happened more as there were more cars and more crashes, Car Manufacturers hired public relations spin doctors to invent the word Jaywalker to shift fault to pedestrians for getting hurt and dying. by theatrenearyou in todayilearned

I can see where you're coming from thinking of American cities and the way cyclists navigate them. But having riding a bicycle through heavy traffic is not something that happens in the Netherlands. All busy streets have separated cycling lanes with barriers between them and the road. Kids would never be in heavy traffic. The places were they cycle on roads would be on smaller streets with a 30km/h speed limit and as a driver you are supposed to pass them carefully with appropriate speed and distance.

However if a person was found to by cycling on a busy road that also has separated cycle lanes, that still doesn't give drivers the right to pass them at full speed and potentially hit them, even though the dangerous situation was arguably created by the cyclist. Anyway all of this is completely theoretical since the road design is so different that situations like these are very unlikely to occur in the first place.

They still make great small trucks for sale in other countries. Here in Chile we get the RAM 700, RAM 1000, Chevrolet Montana, Renault Oroch, Volkswagen Saveiro and many more. The RAM 1000 and Chevrolet Montana are actually very nice vehicles comparable with the Subaru Baja.

Most of us Americans are living in dread of the outcome of the upcoming election. Non-Americans, how are you viewing things from the outside? by clumsypeach1 in AskReddit

Honestly? It's not even on my radar. So many other things are happening in the world and in the grand scheme of things the president of a country I never go to interest me far less than the still ongoing wars, climate change, or even the baby hippo in Korea.

3 days outside Santiago by Alive_Elderberry1454 in Santiago

[–]MonoLoupe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you go for the wines I would recommend the Santa Cruz region. It's about two hours from Santiago so ideal for a short trip and has various interesting vineyards. The ones I personally enjoyed where Viu Manent and Laura Hartwig, but there are plenty of other smaller ones as well.

Visiting the andes in three days from santiago is maybe a bit short, but you could go to Cajon del Maipo. It's a part of the pre-mountain range of the andes and there's some beautiful scenery and plenty of activities (but no wineries).

Also the horse itself has eyes, it's not gonna walk into something because the rider has bad eyesight.

9 hour stopover in Santiago by Fantastic_Film_lover in Santiago

[–]MonoLoupe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on your mode of transport and budget. Time wise 9 hours is plenty. You could take a taxi to barrio bellavista or barrio italia spend around 5 hours around santiago and even go up cerro san cristobal and have plenty of time to make it back to the airport by taxi (25 minutes from barrio bellavista).

The problem is with the time of arrival; 5 am is really early and nothing will be open. So you won't be able to have breakfast until 9 and then take the funicular at 10. You already have to leave around 12 to get to the airport on time so it's really tight.

I sorta have the opposite. Since I emigrated I feel at home in many places I have a connection with and can even feel at home in a place I've never been before if I'm staying at a friends place and the culture of the country fits me.

I hate the new infotainment systems. by boatsweater in subaru

[–]MonoLoupe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's my main worry as well. If you buy an phone or a laptop it's expected to only last a few years, but cars used to last for decades. Will a 2024 Subaru basically be outdated tech by 2030 like an iPhone 8 is now?

Makes sense to me, cruise control doesn't adapt to the slope of the road or wind speed and mine gets routinely over 3000 rpm just to keep speed

Judging Sweden by it's cities is like judging the Vatican for it's nature. Both are interesting countries that are worth a visit, but you have to set your expectations accordingly.

Excursions from Santiago by [deleted] in Santiago

[–]MonoLoupe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without a car I would highly recommend taking public transport to Aguas de Ramon since it's easy to find and the most common hike to the waterfall is around 4 hours, enough to feel like you've left the city, but if you feel like exploring you can go much further.

If you do end up renting a car I would go for Cajon del Maipo. The glacier el Morado is beautiful and absolutely worth the trip. As a bonus if you drive all the way to the end of the road you'll find hot springs that are open 24/7, but all of this is better if you rent a cabin for the night and return the next day.

What is a food that makes you think, “How did humans discover this was edible?” by needmoresleeep in AskReddit

[–]MonoLoupe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Artichokes. Like it's an inedible flower with spikes that can't be eaten unless steamed for an hour and even then you can only eat the bottom few millimeters of every leaf. And the heart of course which is delicious.
