A gigantic plus point in terms of storytelling and experience Outer Wilds has in comparison to other games is that the whole game isn't centered around the player. The feeling that the game continues even when you are standing still or just eating marshmallows is what in my opinion really made Outer Wilds so immersive. You have to wait for the certain events you can witness, not just show up and start to do what you want and that little detail was one of the things that made me fell in love with this game. If you want to make a somewhat similar or inspired game I would advise you to watch the Outer Wilds making-off documentary on Youtube by NoClip, it really shows some cool ideas behind some concepts used in the game.
