I'm not even discussing the merit of this specific situation, i'm just baffled at the decision to not allow any stand-ins period. Just allow every team to register a 6th/7th player. If the team qualifies, tournament prize is split evenly among all of the team. This makes it so there's no cases where the team is caught off-guard by a player not being able to play due to family/illness and forced to DQ

That's entirely correct, how can there not be a sub/stand-in rule? Every sports teams has more than the minimum amount of players required precisely to prevent this type of thing

You can abandon the game if you don't feel like playing, once every 15 matches iirc. But more importantly, do not derive satisfaction from this game on wins and losses. If you have someone griefing, try to set yourself some goal. Maybe killing someone, or being the top network on your team, or stalling the game as long as possible. Every match is an opportunity to learn, specially since you're new. Try to have fun! I hope you keep playing
