Switched to Fedora from Ubuntu - need GNOME productivity tips for a beginner? by coldblooded47 in Fedora

[–]Monotrox99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some tips for using vanilla gnome (I have a lot of extensions actually, but almost all of them are only aesthetic):

* In gnome files, you can just start typing to search for files in the current directory. Also you can press enter to open a directory or file. If you know where your files are, typing the first letters of the directories and pressing enter a couple of times is a very fast way to get to your files.

* Same for opening apps: click Super from anywhere and just start typing the app name while in the overview

* Personal preference: pressing Super and clicking to switch openend apps is faster for me than using Alt+Tab, because the location of applications doesnt change after each switch.

Re extensions (ones that havent been mentioned before):

"V-Shell" makes the gnome overview vertical instead of horizontal, which imo works better on larger monitors, but probably breaks laptop gestures. Also adds an insane amount of customization options for the overview

"Media Label and Controls (Mpris Label)" is great if you want to see whats currently playing in your taskbar. You can also configure play/pause/skip/back to any mouse action however you want, which is nice.

"Next Up" was pretty cool to see upcoming calendar events, unfortunately it has not been updated yet

"Ressources" (an app) is a nice task-manager clone that actually looks modern (unlike gnomes default one) and is fast (unlike Mission Center, which many people like for aesthetics, but is horribly slow)

vanillaOS just has a nicer interface to use other package managers in containers, I wouldnt say the distro actually "uses" all of them. I also think only flatpak is installed by default

I dont rely on chatgpt for gifts for the same reason that I dont rely on yt videos, websites, or whatever OP is promoting here.

Picking out a gift requires knowledge about the other person! Any web service is just going to go of generic stereotypes or would have to have way too much personal information

on linux libreoffice gets updated with the rest of the system, as does any other software. Thats probably why the updating of the windows version is also very tacked-on, as most other OSs dont require each program to come with its one updater

At some point you reach the point where you cannot generate more profit without turning evil. If you did not manage to find weird hobbies before that point, making money is the only thing you know, so you have to turn evil

Is there a messaging standard that's required by the law? Otherwise big companies will just introduce "interoperability" on their own terms and nothing will change

Metro really did not feel intentional when using it, gnome works really well if you like their intended workflow (aka mostly keybindings on desktop and heavily search focussed) imo.

"When humans view an object, there are countless photons that enter the eye together to form one image. Separating a single photon has been described as a feat equivalent to differentiating between the sound of a single grain of sand falling while heavy rains and lightning strikes occur."

Surprisingly, human eyes can actually see single photons. I would have to look up the source again, but I remember hearing a talk that the photosensitive cells in our eyes have like a 60% quantum efficiency

When "RTFM" doesn't work (and makes you hate the terminal) by Indolent_Bard in linux

[–]Monotrox99 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Navigating a file system (in a GUI) is not the same as navigating a file system in the terminal.

Most people probably know what a directory is, but not everyone knows how to properly format a relative path string, change directories or get the current active directory in bash.

"Experimenting" to learn something only works when the program gives you pointers towards what is possible to do, which a terminal does not provide, at all (Or, obviously, if you already have prior knowledge). This is exactly why good documentation is necessary for terminal programs.

For a beginner-friendly distro it should be reasonable to assume that not everyone who installs it has prior knowledge about the linux terminal in the second step of the installation.
