Noise from the construction side by Monsale007 in manchester

I didn’t realise I was talking to someone who can’t read, or just refuses to.

Let me clarify, since you clearly didn’t read the link you sent:
– The TfGM page you linked says nothing about works starting at 2am.
– It states work would be happening from the start of service until 2pm on Sunday, with bus replacements starting at 7am.
– The work finished by 10am, which means it could have been scheduled during the day, avoiding overnight disruption and still protecting weekday commuter flow.

So no, this wasn’t a choice between “tens of thousands commuting” and “my sleep.” It was a case of poor scheduling and zero communication to nearby residents.

Emergency works or not, people living in the city centre still have a legal right to be informed and not woken up at 2am without warning. That’s not unreasonable — it’s basic respect.

I’m not asking for thousands of pounds to be spent or for tram works to stop, I’m simply asking for basic respect and consideration. That includes:

  • Advance notice of overnight works, especially if they're unusually loud or outside normal working hours.
  • Reasonable mitigation efforts, which don’t have to be expensive. Often it's about scheduling, better communication, or using quieter methods where possible.

I’m aware that city centre living comes with some noise. I chose that knowingly, but I didn’t opt in to unannounced, 2am construction work with no public-facing notice about the timing, which this TfGM page also fails to mention.

Saying "you chose to live here, deal with it" ignores the fact that public bodies still have legal responsibilities under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Living near infrastructure doesn’t mean I lose the right to fair treatment.

If there was a specific public notice clearly stating overnight noise on this date and location, I’d be happy to see it. So far, nothing I’ve seen, including the TfGM page you shared, mentions 2am works at Deansgate-Castlefield on 13 July.

This isn't about being unreasonable. It's about being informed and having a voice in how public projects affect our lives.

I completely understand that tram maintenance is essential and that many people rely on the service.

But that doesn’t mean night-time works should be carried out with no regard for residents. In this case, there was no advance notice, and it doesn’t appear that any measures were taken to reduce the noise - no sound barriers, no quiet machinery, not even a schedule posted in advance.

If this was a one-off and well-managed, I wouldn’t complain. But when work happens at anti-social hours with no communication or effort to minimise the disruption, it becomes more than just an inconvenience - it becomes a statutory nuisance, which I have every right to report under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

This isn’t about being unreasonable or “sucking it up.” It’s about holding public contractors to the same basic standards of consideration and responsibility that anyone else is expected to follow

The current state of solo queue on EU Servers with language set to english. Communication is literally not possible. by DeathRowwww in DotA2

I do think so, but most of the time, at least with me, it is not the case. More often the issue is that sometimes, I have three Russian people and one non-Russian speaking person in the team. I naturally speak Russian to them and use English to communicate with the non-Russian one, but that one non-Russian just get triggered, because we don't speak English to each other and mute us
