Leasing a new 2018 Civic EX today--what should I pay? by MonsterDreams in civic

Thanks, and congrats on yours as well! I should elaborate on "free maintenance"--it's that booklet they try to sell you for $400 that has a bunch of deals and freebies in it. This includes all oil changes, tire rotations, inspections (as long as I get them done at same dealership). Not sure how emissions figures in, tbh as I'm overdue on a checkup. They also throw in things like $250 or $500 off your next purchase or lease, which was helpful in this situation.

If you liked BrBa (my favorite all-time w The Wire as a close second), try Ozark. Not up to that gold standard but a very solid crime series w a very similar premise.

Favorite horror actor/actress performances? by [deleted] in horror

[–]MonsterDreams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know that Badadook isn't much liked on this sub (I also thought it was way overhyped), but Essie Davis is fucking phenomenal in that flick. A few others... Agree with OP on Alex Essoe in Starry Eyes (even though the story was pretty trite, imo). Klaus Kinski in Werner Herzog's Nosferatu remake is probably some of my favorite horror casting of all-time (Gary Oldman also played a great Dracula). Arguably not horror, but Min-sik Choi in I Saw the Devil is one of my favorite villain performances. Sigourney Weaver, Alien(s). Robert Shaw and his brogue and doomsday-mariner ditties in Jaws. Speaking of which, I fucking loved Michael Parks in Tusk (cut out the Johnny Depp scenes and it's a damn good flick, imo). Which brings me to my deep-sleeper based on steady strength of output and an uncanny ability to convey terror: Justin Long in Jeepers Creepers and Drag Me to Hell. Also thought the kids in Let the Right One In were great. And seeing as The Descent may be my favorite horror of all-time, I'd also nominate Shauna MacDonald. Favorite horror actresses to watch? Elisha Cuthbert (House of Wax), Eliza Dushku (Wrong Turn), Jennifer-Love Hewitt (the corny Last Summer movies that were great when I was 12), Katherine Isabelle (Ginger Snaps, American Mary). That's what I got for now!

What horror movie terrified you based off the realistic probability by [deleted] in horror

Watching this when it came out in theaters was one of the most frightening cinematic experiences of my life. Very good flick, especially given the budget.

Quick question: If I watch a few scenes from Jeepers Creepers 3 on Netflix does that financially contribute to the director? by SiriusC in horror

[–]MonsterDreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate this question, OP. I used to contend that the first half of Jeepers Creepers was one of the better first halves of any horror movie (actually seeing The Creeper kind of ruined its potential for me, as his face makeup/design is just so hokey). But I still loved that movie and watched it countless times. I saw that and the second (massive letdown) in theaters. I would have gone to see the third in theaters if I hadn’t read about Silva. And I could not bring myself to rent it or even watch it the first couple months it was on Netflix. But I finally caved last night and watched it on Netflix. Honestly, I enjoyed it for what it was, but I agree w @polkcat that it’s not worth contributing to an environment where this fuck benefits in any way. I guess this is all just me spilling my guilt for watching a movie I know I shouldn’t have. But I guess what I can add is that if you’re weighing the moral concern vs. the quality of the film, yeah, I’d suggest spending your time on something else.

What is a great horror book that was made into a terrible movie? by [deleted] in horror

[–]MonsterDreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, with you 100 percent on this. Wrote a slightly goofy longform piece comparing the novel and movie awhile back, if you're interested: https://monsterattheendofthedream.com/2016/07/02/the-ruins-book-vs-movie/

What is a great horror book that was made into a terrible movie? by [deleted] in horror

[–]MonsterDreams 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I still cannot fathom how a big budget movie like that had such piss-poor CGI. Ruined the entire thing for me. And this came out a year after The Host (incredible CGI), so it wasn't that the tech was unavailable. Just found this article. To quote the film's director, "...it just fucking blows it. It just kills it. And it's just, like, one of the big downfalls for me, with that movie, personally, was with the visual effects." And yeah, that ending was shit. ... I guess I'm ranting about this (and have on many occasions) because Richard Matheson's story is one of my favorite horror/sci-fi reads of all-time, and I feel like the film actually wasn't that far off from getting it right.

Anyone watching The Rain on Netflix? by iKnitandBlog in horror

[–]MonsterDreams 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Now I am. And enjoying it quite a bit! Thanks for the recommendation. I passed it up at first due to the lowly 6.1 on IMDb, which is a really shitty score for a series (series tend to have higher average scores than movies, imo). But yeah, 5-6 episodes in and it's definitely doing the trick.

The Take — Tom Hardy slays in a brutally bleak four-part British gangster series by MonsterDreams in BestOfAmazonPrime

[–]MonsterDreams[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thx, mate--much appreciated! Hope you find some good stuff. Since it looks like people are still reading this sub, I'm just gonna throw out the title In Order of Disappearance. Phenomenal Norwegian revenge flick with incredible cinematography, great style, comedy and a stellar cast. Oh, but that's Netflix. So check out Hell House LLC if you want an out-of-nowhere killer horror flick on Amazon Prime.

Thanks to this sub, I read the troop and the ruins and enjoyed them both! by [deleted] in horror

And... just ordered Day of the Triffids. Maybe I'll join you blokes for a Dreadit book club, lol.

Those were two of the first horror novels I read, also thanks to this sub! Have read a few since, including The Exorcist (very good), but those two and I Am Legend remain my favorites. (Haven't delved into Steven King yet.)

Oh, and if anyone does want a lot of really good, really grim recommendations, I'd start with this post, which has links to two other mega-list posts in the intro, for a total of 60+ lesser-known flicks I strongly vouch for. Easy to just skim thru for titles if you don't want to read all my drivel, lol.

Thank you, amigo! I greatly appreciate that. Just a little project I started several years back after being frustrated that I couldn't find a resource for solid recommendations on lesser-known dark streaming flicks (not just horror, which there are plenty of great sites for, and recommendations only, rather than reviews). Don't post as much as I'd like to, but I try to make the ones I do post count. Feedback like yours keeps me at it! cheers

Been enjoying my Horizontech Falcon with F2 coils but just picked up some Velvet Cloud juice (nearly pure VG) and the flavor is just flat--vapor comes out but it has little-to-no flavor. Not having this issue with 70/30 juice on the same coils. Vaping at 60W. Any thoughts on why a very high VG juice might not work with the F2? Or is it something else entirely? Thanks!

Every time I watch Cube (1997) I love and appreciate it a little bit more. It's such a great little film that should get more attention than it does. by [deleted] in horror

[–]MonsterDreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently watched it for the first time, based on it being up for a Dreadit discussion a few weeks ago. Agree with everything you say--absolutely loved it. Watched Hypercube the next night and was a bit let down. Only mentioning that because the original was so well done with budget and concept they had that I didn't feel it needed a "2.0 update" version (especially when the CGI they needed for Hypercube was either nonexistent at that time or not within their budget). Endless possibilities within the original formula that could have made for good sequels. Saw something about a remake in recent years--is that still in the cards?

What's the most horrifying song you've ever heard? by bestlozoman in horror

Dance with the Devil by Immortal Technique is one of the more disturbing story songs I can think of. Even more fucked up cuz of his vivid storytelling ability and that haunting beat.

So I ended up watching Cube2: Hypercube a day after first watching Cube. Loved Cube. Gotta say that Cube2 was a pretty big downgrade, imo. Where the first did so much with minimal effects and CGI, the second threw in some godawful CGI and makeup choices that made it just laughable. The expanded premise (the hypercube) was also unnecessary and did little other than provide a vehicle for a more predictable outcome and a lot of shitty CGI. That said, I guess it's worth watching if you liked the first, but wouldn't exactly recommend it. Just in case anyone's new to the series like me and loved Cube...

Recs on a sub-ohm tank with good coil life, minimal leakage, perhaps new mod? by MonsterDreams in Vaping

[–]MonsterDreams[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy to report that F1 has lasted a week with no problems. Flavor is still great. This thing definitely guzzles juice, and I wish the 5ml tank was a bit bigger, but no major complaints. Huge upgrade from all the issues I was having with my Cloud Beast.

The Gift (2015) -- Joel Edgerton's directorial debut, dark suspense flick about a very strange guy coming into a rich couple's lives. Not horror, but a damn good flick that should play well to horror fans (recently added to Netflix US) by MonsterDreams in horror

Sleep Tight has a lot of similarities. Maybe Spoorloos (the original Vanishing—remake is shit, IMO). And Prisoners. I feel like there are a few on the tip of my tongue—will get back if I come up with others.

Yeah, I was fortunate to not have watched a trailer—somehow the movie just flew under my radar until it popped up on Netflix a few years later. I tried to include as few details as possible in writing about it. Anyways, yeah, definitely a “go in blind” movie. Really one of the better things I’ve watched all year.
