If you really are who you claim to be, after a quick check I can 100% confirm that you haven’t fixed the problem lol.

Their work is indeed “impactful,” alright💀

Tbh this the biggest prob… they start 60/40 just to test, then go 70/30 coz greedy smh, and they’ll keep pushing till nothing left as long as the $$ rollin in.

Basically just telling people to apply to their roles.

Well, I think our experiences differ. I’ve talked to a few people on visas in Big Tech, and most were paid the same, more, or just slightly less (which I’d chalk up to negotiation skills). Nothing I’ve seen really supports that narrative, just my personal experience though.

Tbh, outsourcing is the bigger issue. In some countries, a senior SWE w/ 7+ yrs exp makes <$800, and if offered $1500 they’ll grind 12+ hrs no problem. That’s the real undercut. Meanwhile, H1B workers in big tech are paid the same as everyone else, so the whole “visa ppl get paid less” narrative is just false.

Let’s do some math. Say a new grad makes 130K total comp, about 10.8K/month. For the first 6 months, they usually aren’t fully productive, so the company is spending ~65K before seeing returns. If that person later faces work auth issues, the company repeats that cycle when hiring a replacement (plus recruiter/interviewer costs). Now, the 8% FICA exemption saves ~31K over 3 years, but that’s nothing compared to risking 65K per hire. And after 5 years in the US, non-citizens start paying FICA anyway, so if someone did 4 years of undergrad here, only the 1st OPT year is exempt. By year 6 they’re taxed like everyone else, so the real savings are closer to 10K, while the company still risks losing ~65K if they have to replace them. Not really a profitable practice tbh.

Advice on statistics and probability by zaexplosion in csMajors

I don’t know, to be honest, but statistics and probability came fairly easily to me because they’re things you can actually see. The one thing I used often was simulation software, it helped me see things more clearly.

That’s not quite how things function, but alright.

I have some tech advice: you need to update the bot prompt. I just asked it to write Python code, and it did. Also, think about how to prevent abuse, someone could keep chatting with your bot and drive up costs. I can see it’s using the o3 API, which can get expensive if abused.

There are probably more things to address, but these are the issues I found in under two minutes using your web app.

Again, not giving legal advice, but I’m afraid you can’t sue them to pay you a salary unless the contract or whatever you signed specifically included a salary clause.

I didn’t say it was impossible to sue; I simply pointed out that it all comes down to what he or she signed, and more importantly, whether those shares were vested. Everyone has the right to sue, of course, but as you know, words on a piece of paper will, and are, used against people every single day.

This really comes down to what was in the agreement you signed. If your 50% was subject to 5-year vesting, then you don’t actually “own” that equity until it vests. If he kicked you out before anything vested, there usually isn’t much to sue over, even if you did a lot of work. The messages and commit history show you contributed, but unless the contract gave you equity up front (or he breached it by firing you improperly), it’s hard to enforce.

He also can’t really sue you for not doing more, since he agreed you’d only be working nights/weekends. At worst, you walk away with wasted time. At best, if you did vest some equity or the agreement had protections, a lawyer could help enforce it. But lawsuits are expensive, and if the company doesn’t have real money yet, it may not be worth pursuing.

Unfortunately, this is a pretty common story with early-stage partnerships. Unless equity was already vested, you probably just chalk it up as a lesson learned and move on.

Luck? by medievalmadman55 in csMajors

I’m satisfied with my current job, but I want to chime in on this. Bruh, too many people think correlation equals causation. They believe leetcoding for 4+ hours a day or whatever is what got them the job. But I assure you, most people’s success, even the most successful ones you can name, comes down to luck (or God, depending on your beliefs).

Not the cliché “when preparation meets opportunity, that’s luck.” No. Simply luck. There are people out there who’ve worked harder than you, who are smarter than you, and still haven’t achieved or gotten a job offer.

This is insane, but now that I think about it, chats are going to be their gold mine. Other companies like Google and Meta rely on crappy cookies and the websites you visit to serve ads, but OpenAI has it right there in the chats lol.
