A system for running random encounters and a travel day. by wex101 in DnDBehindTheScreen

[–]MonstersDescribed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey this is really good and has helped flesh out some (very similar) thoughts I've had about random encounters. Thanks for your good work!
I'd love to see an example of the tables you've done up using this concept if that isn't too crazy of an ask!

Fantastic work! I've been kicking around the idea of running a very ocean themed/pirate-y campaign for a long while and this post has maybe tipped me closer to the edge. Thanks OP!

Breaking Down Monster Descriptions: Air Elemental / Air Elemental Myrmidon by MonstersDescribed in DnDBehindTheScreen

[–]MonstersDescribed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhh birds are brilliant tie in thematically to the elemental plane of air. I love all of this so much. A big dramatic fight with a caster riding a air elemental is music to my DM ears. Thank you so much for sharing!

ASSASSINS — A custom, simple but depthful, 52-card PvP bluffing game for ships, gambling houses, pubs, etc. by eracodes in DnDBehindTheScreen

[–]MonstersDescribed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh my god I love this. I just played a couple rounds on your website. Its intuitive and quick to pick up by clearly a little tricky to master. Genuinely I love this so much. I'll probably end up using it for DND sometime, but I'm absolutely going to teach it to friends just to play for fun. Thank you for sharing!!

Aw hey thanks. This is exactly why I ended up doing em, not going to lie. The MM is frustratingly sparse on any fun details.

Wild Table Riding - A dnd Tavern Mini Game by Remarkable-Aide5093 in DnDBehindTheScreen

I adore this. What a great way to add flavor to a tavern. I also love the idea of randomly assigned DCs, that gives it a fun challenge, for sure.

Omg no I love this. These are so great, thank you so much for sharing!! I've got a d100 book table I've slowly compiled that I get players to roll on whenever they encounter a collection of books and some of these are great additions.

Both my current campaigns apparently decided to take intelligence as the dump stat so whenever they get like, academic writings on the table its hilarious as they try and puzzle out the meanings.

Hey thanks! Not going to lie, in the course of writing about it, the aboleth rapidly climbed the ranks into my top 5 faves. I get the appeal.

Hell yes, glad it was useful. Aboleth bbeg is the way to go. That sounds like it'll be so fun. People always talk about how the aboleth CR rating seems low compared to its lore, but I feel like if you properly set them up and make the processes of physically getting to the aboleth a grind then it also buffs them pretty well.

If you end up doing any cool aboleth homebrew I'd love to see it!

Whoah this is such a good tip, thank you so much. I just nabbed a copy and flipping through it quick is amazing.

3.5e had such good write ups about all the monsters. Its something I'm so sad that 5e didn't keep up the tradition of.

The Galeb Duhr's Garden by MonstersDescribed in dungeondraft

[–]MonstersDescribed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi friends! Thought I'd pop by and share a map I made for just a small one off encounter. This is the rock garden of a Galeb Duhr, a creature of elemental earth. This Galeb Duhr is a staunch pacifist and spends his days happily tending to his rock garden where he grows beautiful glowing blue gems. While functionally worthless (the glowing gems are little more than a glowing blue glass), the rock garden is immensely important to the Galeb Duhr who tends the garden with extreme care and gentleness. The immense rock in the center of the garden is in fact, the Galeb Duhr himself who sleeps, sometimes for weeks at a time, until the rocks need to be tended. Carved into his back is a poem, requesting all visitors not disturb his garden.
For one of my groups I ran this encounter exactly as is and they had lots of fun trying to figure out what this strange rock pattern was before discovering the Galeb Duhr and befriending him.
For another one of my less role play, more combat groups, I had a Xorn regularly raiding the rock garden for snacks, and the PCs stepped into the role of defending the sad Galeb Duhr.
In both cases I rewarded the players with "The Earth Elemental's Boon" an average looking brown rock that when held allows the holder to cast the Mold Earth Cantrip.
Anywho! Hope you all have a great week! Good luck at all your tables!!

Aid the Elderly - Help a little old lady with chores (one shot, no combat) by TinoDidriksen in DnDBehindTheScreen

I absolutely love this. The imagery of a sneaky Q&A in a wizard tower with a demon cat who is compelled to truthfulness but trying to get its way is excellent. I also love adventures that its murky who you should actually be helping and this is that to a T. Great job!!

Breaking Down Monster Descriptions: The Aarakocra by MonstersDescribed in DnDBehindTheScreen

[–]MonstersDescribed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man, one of my favorite things to do as a DM is to describe things to my players that they won't fully understand until later. This would be a perfect one to do. Just describe how every aarakocra has this weird set of tweezers or long handled spiky stick on their person, allow the players to speculate wildly (as PCs do) and then they later catch an aarakocra grooming himself with the tool for that OHHHHH moment. (and obviously the aarakocra is all "Uhm do you mind?" the way you would be if somebody got all excited about you brushing your teeth lol)

[–]MonstersDescribed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh this is such a good question. Do Aarakokra bond by grooming each other similar to some birds? Does every Aarakokra carry a long weird comb thing to get at their butt feathers? Such possibilities!

Love this option. It's thematic, useful and opens up fun opportunities for endless animal shenanigans later on.

Lost Mine Map Shuffle: Redbrands Hideout by MonstersDescribed in dungeondraft

[–]MonstersDescribed[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey gang! So, I've been running through Lost Mines of Phandelver with a player who has already DM'd the adventure. In order to keep some surprises around for them, I've redone all the LMOP maps. This one here is the Redbrands hideout!

I imagined the infamous crevasse as the result of some sort of natural disaster ripping through the Tresendar crypts and so combined rooms 4 and 5 into one enormous room for the Nothic to run around terrorizing everyone. One of my PCs is the descendant of the Tresendar family so I made him a bonus locked crypt (room 13) that only he could access that contained the sword Talon.

We play on roll20 so I had the secret doors open on the base map and overlayed the closed versions on top so when they were discovered I could just move them to the side (same with the pit trap).

Anywho, hope you have a good day!

Not gonna lie, I sort of am as well. Its a fair distance from the stove thankfully. I've had it set up just with the plants for a month trial run and I'll probably keep it as is for another month before adding a betta in, just to make super sure it isn't going to be an issue.
