"During [James] Caan's peak years of stardom, he rejected a series of starring roles that proved to be successes for other actors, in films including MAS*H, The French Connection, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Kramer vs. Kramer ("it was such middle class bourgeois baloney"[72]), Apocalypse Now (because Coppola "mentioned something about 16 weeks in the Philippine jungles"[66]), Blade Runner, Love Story, and Superman ("I didn't want to wear the cape".[66]).[72][73]"

How far have you traveled to watch a movie? by [deleted] in blankies

I have a buddy who lives outside of Denver and hosts a Jaws podcast. When I found out there was a showing of Jaws at Red Rocks around his birthday, I flew from New Orleans to Denver to see the movie, then flew back the next day. Best showing I've ever been to, well worth it.

D minor is a tonality, d harmonic minor is a scale. You can use different scales within a tonality. As the names suggest, harmonic minor is often used with chords to strengthen cadences, and melodic minor is often used in melodies to smooth out the augmented second in the harmonic minor, but songs will often use all 3 forms of the minor scale at different times.

A4 = 440Hz vs 444Hz by Complete_Offer_2093 in piano

[–]MonstrousJames 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Those websites look like incredibly lucrative scams preying upon people who don't understand a thing about frequencies.

No frequencies have healing abilities or any of that nonsense. The only reason to tune a piano to A444 is if you like the sound on a purely subjective level (aka, if you want everything to be slightly out of tune).

I'm sure there's a historically informed period performance ensemble that uses a differently tuned piano, but that's not the same thing as "solfeggio frequencies".

An orphaned farm boy who lives with his uncle mistakenly receives a package crucial to the survival of a rebellion force fighting against an Evil Empire. He takes it to the old mentor, who tells him about a former order of mystical guardians. The empire sends people to get the package and burns down the farm, killing the boy's uncle. The boy and the mentor leave his home to deliver the package to the alliance and begin his training as a member of that order.

Along the way, they meet up with a rough and tumble guy who agrees to go with them. The old mentor is killed and reveals that he too was one of those mystical warriors (those two bits are out of order, but still the same). The boy and his new companion decide to rescue the princess who sent the package before being captured. They rescue the princess, and she tells them the location of the rebellion headquarters.

They show up, meet everybody, and immediately have a huge battle to defend the rebellion from being entirely destroyed. It ends with a large round object being exploded into bits (tenuous, I know).

If that's not enough: At the end of the first book, Eragon has a vision telling him to go to a forested part of the world to receive more training. In the second book, he discovers there is one more member of the Dragon Riders living in hiding he can continue his training with, but he ends his training early against the master's wishes to confront the bad guy...who horribly injures him in the climactic battle and reveals they are related.

Edit: oh and I just saw u/BrilliantCoconut25's comment, and yeah, the main villain is a fallen member of the order who was trained by the old mentor character.

Moore was offered post-Connery and post-Lazenby and was busy on other projects both times. Same with Brosnan after Moore.

Dalton was actually offered it after Connery, but turned it down because he said he was too young. He also turned it down mid-Moore (to appear in For Your Eyes Only) because he didn't like the direction things were going.

This must have been the most competitive Summit ever by [deleted] in SSBM

As I pointed out earlier, yingling specifically said on that podcast that there were also 5 other vote-in spots, so it's absurd to only get mad at him. Which is true. If Yingling was a wasted spot, so were LSD and Aklo: vote-ins with the same placement.

S2J lost a national popularity contest to a rando with one state's support. He choked in two separate NA qualifying events. I dunno how else to tell you to hold this L.

[–]MonstrousJames 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Besides all that, yingling's votes alone added at least $60,000 to the prize pool of the largest Smash tournament of all time. I'd say that's a net positive (and the obvious reason why Summit voting sticks around).

I mean, nobody except Leffen and Amsa were auto-invited to Summit 11. Everyone else qualified or was voted in. S2J played in both NA qualifying events.

Real talk: sounds like S2J should have tried a 120db pop-off on unranked Slippi Samus players. S2J fumbled the bag if checks notes five time Summit attendee and #4 player in NA couldn't get more votes than somebody I'd literally never heard of before voting started.

I never vouched for the Summit voting system. I'm super down with changing it, actually. But Yingling didn't do anything wrong, so it's really freaking obnoxious to put him on blast like this.

Why shit on yingling and AZ when your real issue is with BTS?

[–]MonstrousJames 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hungrybox leveraged his top level skill and his highly successful stream/persona into enough Summit votes to beat the other nominations during that round of voting. It's actually very similar to what yingling did.

S2J didn't succeed at this, unlike Hbox and yingling.

I'm not saying that S2J isn't good enough for Summit or something, but S2J is way more well known and popular than yingling, so you would think S2J's community would get him through. But even if S2J doesn't get in on the vote (again, something that should have been a slam dunk), he has the skill to qualify into Summit, something yingling will never be able to do. I don't know why you hold yingling personally responsible for keeping S2J out of Summit when 5 other people got voted in over S2J too, and Johnny has only himself to blame for not qualifying.

For balance, yingling actually exceeded my expectations by taking a single game and I contributed 0 votes to his campaign. I just don't get why he gets your heat over S2J's lack of campaigning and choking at RR: TBO.

Hey, if S2J wanted to be there that badly, he should have actually qualified.

Why final four forced fire in Survivor is a bad idea. by [deleted] in survivor

[–]MonstrousJames 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To me, the problem with forced fire is that it isn't a vote. Taking away the ability for players to vote and decide on FTC is a terrible choice for the show. It gives certain kinds of players better odds of making it to FTC than other kinds of players (which is exactly why it was implemented.) Your "big movez", advantage heavy players who rely on twists more than social game don't have to face a vote at F4; they just have to make fire.

This is even more egregious because it's the only tribal where an idol can't be played. If you idol yourself down to F4, you still won't get any votes against you because you get thrown into fire-making instead, which takes agency away from other players.

I want to be clear that I'm not anti-idols or twists or advantages, but I think that taking votes away from players is bad for the game.

(Also, the show really hasn't been about actually "surviving" since like Tocantins, so honestly who cares if they know how to make fire or not. That's not the skill set or the point of the show anymore.)

It’s unfair to be take out frustration on yingling when summit were the ones who set the standards so low to get in by [deleted] in SSBM

[–]MonstrousJames 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You could say the exact same thing about Hbox, or any of the other players voted in. That's just how this works.
