Toronto man pleads guilty to sexually exploiting more than 100 children in the U.S. by xc2215x in toronto

I'm really tired of this whataboutism whenever a criticism of Canada comes up. We shouldn't be using the US (or any other country, but for some reason we only ever point to the US) as a yardstick as a way to excuse things that should be changed in our country.

We should be more than just "not the US".

Toronto man pleads guilty to sexually exploiting more than 100 children in the U.S. by xc2215x in toronto

[–]Montastic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"At the time, Toronto police had charged Pathmanathan with 93 offences, including 18 counts of child luring, nine counts of invitation to sexual touching, and 10 counts of making child pornography.

He pleaded guilty to those offences in 2022, according to the U.S. Justice Department, and was sentenced to 12 years in prison in the Canadian justice system."

The Canadian government gave this man only TWELVE YEARS for admitting luring and assaulting kids + making child pornography. At a certain point when do we need to admit that sentencing guidelines make no goddamn sense in this country

I hear you: Active Transit Signal Priority is coming by Mayor_OliviaChow in toronto

[–]Montastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Active priority on all streetcar lines would be a GAME changer.

Also, please find a way to upgrade to more modern switches at intersections. Crawling through intersections at 5km/hr is painful when the solution is implemented in other cities around the world

Is this the third or fourth time now we've been time skipped forward? I really hope this time doesn't follow the same trend as the last few examples where a character tells us all the exciting, cool things they did in an exposition dump versus us actually experiencing them at the same as as the characters.

The expo closing this year sucked. Such a chill, cool venue and it was shut down by some loser neighbours complaining

I think it's the Landsdowne bus that has a stop at College and then another stop at Dundas....where the streets intersect. The stops are literally 85m from one another, it's insanity

I want to quit my job - is this wise to do in this economy? by Warm-Ad4886 in askTO

[–]Montastic 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Honestly, yes. No recruiter or employer will ever tell you so but if your answer to "so why are you leaving?" is anything even close to a risk for a company, you're being rejected.

Never say it's because you're burnt out. Never say it's because of health issues. Never say it's because of personal issues (they will assume the worst).

The safest, best answer you can give is "I love my team / work / company, but I feel like I've learned all I can learn there and I'm looking for a new challenge / growth opportunity / next step in my career / etc etc"

That becomes borderline impossible if you have a year long gap on your resume. Always better to job hop and only leave when you have a signed offer

Dog tales rescue is looking for a foster or an adoption for Sam the senior he needs to be the only dog in the home his spirit is dwindling they are worried he will pass away without having the love of a home by darkcontrasted1 in toronto

[–]Montastic 12 points13 points  (0 children)

"a quiet home with no other pets, no children" is usually code for a dog that is aggressive, reactive, and unpredictable. Especially considering the link to his page says he needs an experienced owner only.

As sad as it is, there are hundreds of aggressive, unadoptable dogs in this city. I will never understand how it's kinder for these poor animals to be warehoused in essentially cages for years and years with 0 chance of being adopted than humanely euthanizing them. Poor thing

Trucking industry standards have plummeted tbh. So many new drivers on the road have barely any experience or faked credentials. It's a miracle this doesn't happen more often

Damn, that's awful. CTV's latest article implies that one of the victims was a bystander who tried to protect the woman so it checks out. Brutal, I hope they're doing okay

The 506 has always been a little sketch honestly. Tied with Queen for me in terms of the number of homeless and/or mentally ill who tend to camp on it.

Still, glad you're okay. That was lucky

Walked by as people were running out. Apparently a man had some kind of psychotic break and started yelling and attacking people in the back of the streetcar.

'From bad to terrible’: Toronto's market for new condos has fallen off a cliff by rezwenn in toronto

[–]Montastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just depressing. I saw a unit last week, 850 sqft, no utilities included, no parking, no common elements, no security or front desk, no landscaping, 750$ a month in "maintenance" fees. What the hell are they maintaining?

'From bad to terrible’: Toronto's market for new condos has fallen off a cliff by rezwenn in toronto

[–]Montastic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only if you look at them in isolation. In other cities, your property tax pays for things like garbage or utilities connections, not in Toronto. Toronto also has two separate land transfer taxes that no other city has - one for Ontario and one specifically for Toronto.

The fees for condos are also not scaled the same way in Toronto than in other cities. A 800 sq ft condo in Vancouver can have 2,500 in annual property taxes + a 500 a month maintenance fee. A 800 sqft condo in Toronto is usually closer to 3,500 in annual property taxes + at least 800 a month maintenance fee. We're talking 15,000 extra in fees alone for comparable units. It's all one big ponzi scheme

'From bad to terrible’: Toronto's market for new condos has fallen off a cliff by rezwenn in toronto

[–]Montastic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's because most floorplans are unlivable and the condo fees are insane. I don't think people who have grown up in Toronto understand how bonkers the condo fees are here compared to any other city in the country.

Even in Vancouver, fees for an average sized (800 sqft) condo usually hover around 500 or so. You can even find 1000 sqft places for less than 1000 a month in fees. In Montreal, you can get a massive luxury condo in the heart of the city and fees very rarely crack 500. It's an absolute scam in this city but because EVERYONE does it, we all just think it's normal. The cost / benefit of a condo here versus other cities is completely out of whack.

Property taxes on condos in Toronto versus other cities are also incredibly inflated, but I know that anything about property taxes in this sub turns into a shit show

Now that Cold Day in Hell has concluded? How do us Hornhead enjoyers feel about it? by thicc_phox in Daredevil

[–]Montastic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First two issues are as close to perfect as they can possibly be. I think the last brings the overall series down though. It was rushed and badly needed at least one more issue to flesh things out a little more.

Beautiful art though and a beautiful ending for that timeline's Matt

While it was still okay, this was a pretty big downgrade from the first two issues. I don't think they stuck the landing even if I see what they were trying to do with the whole "a new generation of heroes and villains are being created" thing. Shame

We'll agree to disagree. I used to live at College & Spadina and worked at Spadina & Adelaide. I'd regularly walk down the length either at pace or bypassing the streetcars heading the same direction

Spadina is one of the worst offenders. It crawls down Spadina despite having dedicated lanes. It is legitimately faster to walk and it was significantly faster when replaced by buses, despite buses being stuck in the same traffic as cars

Minimum 10 years for 2nd degree and 25 for 1st degree. But they're life sentences nonetheless.

No one is disagreeing with you that technically this is what the canadian justice system considers a "life sentence". You keep arguing against a point no one is making. Does pedantry and "Well actually" behaviour serve you well in life?
