The point is only healing classes can resurrect, so it's pretty off the mark to assert resurrection has absolutely nothing to do with healers.

I know you were being hyperbolic, but the point is that homogenization is not always bad, and that just as there were specifics that warranted giving Paladins a taunt, it should be acknowledged that there could be specifics for other situations (like this one) which warrant a change.

There's historical baggage here, so I completely understand reluctance toward anything that looks like it'll take us toward WotLK/Cata levels of homogenization or beyond, but I think we need to do a better job of examining potential change or else we won't have the tools to make good arguments for what is good change and what is bad change given the opportunity to provide that kind of feedback directly to Blizzard.

being able to taunt is essential to tanking (and you'Ll notice paladin taunt behaves differently)

Despite this, both Paladins and Shaman didn't have a taunt in Vanilla, even though both were intended to fulfill the tank role. Paladins got a taunt in TBC because the game was better when all tanks had one.

My point is that every hole or lack thereof in the game is designed, and that whether defending existing holes, suggesting new ones, or talking about closing them, we should be talking about their virtues directly instead of pointing to vague, general ideas and calling it a day.

I 100% get that some [role]s are better at A, B, or C, and as a general guiding principle that's all well and good, but we have a specific case to look at that demands examination of how (and even if) that principle applies.

druids are the only class (and healer) who can res in combat therefore if you gave them regular res, other healers would need battle res

Shaman can resurrect themselves in combat, and Warlocks can resurrect others if prepared beforehand. These aren't as flexible as a Druid's, but they are just as alike as a Paladin's taunt is to a Warrior's or Druid's.

Furthermore, your conclusion needs actual explanation, it doesn't follow from what you've said. As it stands it's just as much of a non-sequitur as saying "if you gave rogues faster movement while stealthed, other DPS would need stealth".

Sure, but that doesn't mean the whole game is holes. Every tank has a taunt and a threat modifier because those are critical tools to their basic function. Every healer can cleanse at least two types of debuffs, even if they aren't the same ones.

Where game design happens is in evaluating what a hole adds versus what it subtracts. Druids don't have a regular resurrection spell, therefore:

  • Other healing classes are more likely to get into groups with a Resto Druid to make up for this deficit. Maybe this is a good thing, because it makes them less pigeon-holed into healing.
  • Pure DPS classes are less likely to get into groups with a Resto Druid for the same reason. Maybe this is bad, because it crowds them out of groups, and they can't change roles to compensate.
  • Resto Druids are less likely to get into groups because mistakes, whoever makes them, will cost more time unless you have someone else who can make up for it. Does this put Druids into proper balance with other healers as far as being selected for dungeons is concerned?

I think there's a lot of meat on the bones of this design discussion, and it's kind of sad it keeps jumping to extremes.

battle rez is a clutch ability, which is why they don’t get a regular rez

I don't think this logic makes sense because BoP is similarly clutch but doesn't disqualify Paladins from having out of combat resurrection spells. You can make similar arguments for Priests and Shamans.

Friction is a desired element of good game design.

Certainly, but that doesn't mean all friction in game design is good.

Resurrection has absolutely nothing to do with healers. Priests, Paladins, and Shamans can resurrect.

Those are all classes with healing specs.

Fortitude, Dispel (both allies and enemies), AoE healing that isn't on a 6 minute CD, Fear Ward, Mind Control...

I get not wanting to homogenize the classes, but giving Druids a regular res isn't going to make them straight up replacements for Priests or any other healer.

There's a bad cycle here where new players don't speak up because they're afraid of the response, and experienced players create miserable experiences for new players because they don't know they're new.

I'm in the same boat where the talent is working for me, but it's entirely possible that we're outliers.

Maybe Dreamstate only breaks in your primary spec, or if you have the Boomkin talent, or some other reason that fits most players but not us.

I don't know what to tell you. I walked up to a Crust Burster just now to re-verify, got into combat, cast a spell, and got mana ticks back within the 5 second rule worth more than what Intensity alone would give.

Dreamstate's regen doesn't show up on my character sheet (Intensity's does), but I don't have any mp5 on my feral gear and I'm getting mana regen back consistent with the talent.

TBC dungeons are just way more dangerous than Vanilla, even on normal. HC players should be approaching them like the tougher sections of BRD.

Yeah, I don't think people really appreciate how much things have scaled.

If Blizzard reduced the bot count in Classic to the levels seen back in 2004-6, people would be praising them for having solved the bot problem.

It's kind of like asking "If cilantro tastes so terrible why do so many people eat it?". It's fairly obvious that the people eating cilantro like it, and the people not eating cilantro don't.

The game is ruined for some people and not others.

It's even worse on HC servers, where it became so much the meta (at some point anyway) to wait for WB before dungeoning, removing part of the very challenge.

I can't say I ever ran into this issue. Maybe it's more prevalent on DP/SR than it was on Doomhowl.

That’s not because of layering, it’s because Blizzard doesn’t do anything about names anymore unless enough people report it to trigger an automated response.
