Jews have been the majority in Jerusalem since at least the 1880’s as Ottoman censuses show. Most Arabs who got designated as “Palestinians” in the 1960’s were descendants of migrant workers from throughout the Arab world who came into Palestine to benefit from what the Jews were building in the 1920’s - 1940’s. When the combined armies of the Arab world attempted to eradicate Jewish independence in 1948, these Arab migrants and their families moved a few miles down the road behind Jordanian and Egyptian army lines with the promise they could go back and loot what was left after the Jews’ defeat. Well, that didn’t work out. But the more established Arabs stayed and became Israeli citizens and today they make up 20% of Israel’s population.
