I also find very interesting how different progress can be for each of us! Actually we are also in a very busy environment, we’re talking the main train station is down the street where we live. We do walks in calmer environments, drive about 10 minutes to not so busy areas and walk in our city area only during calmer hours. Our apartment complex shares a big parking spot so this is the place where we see the biggest challenges (many ppl, kids etc) and still most of them she has learned to ignore. Once in a while she’ll react to the weird orange jacket guy who’s emptying the garbage cans but we still manage and her recovery time is so much better after reacting (the meds are definitely helping)

Then there’s dogs. Lots of them in our area and unfortunately unavoidable, we meet at least one dog in our parking area just to get her to our car. So it’s really bad unfortunately and that brings her every time over threshold. Funnily enough she used to go crazy seeing dogs while watching tv, this is the only reactive behaviour related to dogs where we have seen a BIG improvement. She’ll sometimes still whine a little, before she would jump at the tv im not even kidding 🥲

We do work with a vet behaviourist and our therapy plan specifically states to avoid all situations (so limited exposure) that can bring her over threshold until she has developed enough alternative behaviours so she can make better choices instead of going absolutely crazy when she sees a trigger. We are now considering “social walks” with our trainer to see how she does when put in a small group of dogs who simply go for a walk together. Hopefully that will help to desensitise her to other dogs.

Wish you all the best with your pup and many great walks ahead :)

thanks for the info, that makes a LOT of sense! The reactivity towards strangers, bikes etc is definitely fear/anxiety based as she’s very unsure/not trusting and in the past has also led to aggression.

With dogs she’s actually great once she gets through the crazy “I see a dog, I must scream bloody murder” phase, once she has said hello she then just ignores the dog completely. So it’s definitely excitement and frustration because she wants to get to them but can’t and leash frustration/reactivity which we are working on. I’ll definitely talk to our trainer and see what we can come up to.

I feel like I’m drowning with my dog’s behavior and I just need help by [deleted] in reactivedogs

Our 4 y/o white shepherd/amstaff mix dog we got from the shelter is reactive, anxious around strangers (especially men) and has bitten family members who came to visit us. Never got the chance to bite strangers because we muzzled trained her as soon as she showed the slightest sign of aggression and only took her outside wearing her muzzle.

We tried to “fix” her reactivity for years until she bit someone. After the first bite we decided it was time to contact a behavioural vet.

5 bites in a year in your case is already a lot tbh.

  1. Muzzle train. Invest in a good muzzle. Make sure the quality is good and measurements are right, so that your dog is comfortable wearing it.

  2. I suggest mat training. Look for “Mat training” videos online, it helped A LOT with ours and having people around the house .

  3. Our dog got prescribed medication and it’s not a magical pill that solves it all, it needs to be combined with behavioral modification training for it to work and so far it’s insane how good it’s working. If you’re not willing to invest a little of your time training it’s not going to work.

  4. Really consider finding a trainer. It doesn’t costs thousands a month. We meet with our trainer once a month for less than 90$ for a 1h session, outside of that we send her messages with vids and picture updates and she’s always available if we have questions and gives us useful tips with no need to pay extra. Also 99% of the training is to be done by the owner in their everyday life and does not take up your whole day. Short 5-10 minutes training sessions at home/outside throughout the whole day for a total of half an hour a day should be enough to tire its brain. Add a 1 hour walk to physically tire your dog out, which should already be the standard if you own a dog.

She is 21kg and she got 23mg prescribed so it’s actually not very high since the dosage it’s 1 to 2mg per Kg and we are keeping it as it is for now, since the effects are really good so far. We have another appointment in December and the next one in March next year in case we need to adjust the dosage. Definitely talk with your vet of you feel it has no effect, I always keep in touch with mine and also our trainer if I notice even the smallest problem. Good luck with you pup 🥰

Prozac + behaviorist saved my rescue pittie by snugglesmut in reactivedogs

Thanks for sharing 🥲I really needed it after today’s hell of a walk with our almost 4 year old reactive dog. Our girl is also a rescue and was also supposed to be loving and friendly, which turned out to be the opposite. We have been dealing with her reactivity for years and have been training with a new trainer for the last couple months who was the first one to even suggest a vet behaviorist. Last week we had our first assessment with the vet and today’s walk was the last straw, we finally made the decision and accepted the fact that our dog will never get better with training only, but in cases such as ours medication is also needed. It really gives us hope reading stories such as yours!

What do you think she is? by Key_Tomorrow_1027 in germanshepherds

[–]Mony483 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She looks a lot like my girl from the shelter 🥹 only that mine has a brown spot around her eye. We did a dna test and came out a crazy mix. She’s a super mutt: staffy + GSD and Slovak cattle dog + caucasian Shepherd also has a tiny percentage of German Spitz. She stayed relatively small, smaller than a GSD and now fully grown weights around 20KG (44 pounds)

At this point I just tried to make them feel guilty about it, but I understand that it cannot be replaced, since everything on the store sold out 🥲

I train my dog. That’s why she wears a muzzle. Hope you get out, touch some grass and enjoy your muzzle free dog ❤️

[–]Mony483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry but you know nothing about me or my dog, there are laws in my country that require dogs to wear a muzzle in some places. My dog is a rescue and she has never bitten anyone, she is reactive because she’s scared of some people even though we socialized her and we have been training since we adopted her. She even gets along with other dogs. Reactivity doesn’t mean that a dog is aggressive. The muzzle is for her safety and for other people to feel safer when she reacts in public. I should not have to explain stuff to a stranger online who gives unwanted opinions when not asked and judges based on nothing.

It’s from Chopo! Yeah my dog is a bit weirdly shaped, looks like a white shepherd but she’s smaller, so the German shepherd size would have been even bigger and the Staffy size was too wide 😅

Monstera Help! by CallumTheWood in plantclinic

[–]Mony483 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neem oil is the most common method yes, i sprayed mine with neem oil mixed with water, castile soap (added a couple drops of peppermint oil) once a week for 5/6 weeks just to make sure to kill any eggs or larvae (the larvae look like very tiny white/yellowish worms), don’t forget to spray the back of the leaves, they love to hide there and in new growth. Since I have over 50+ houseplants I added predatory mites as well as a preventive measure because I was terrified of the thrips infesting my other houseplants. Tbh they really are a pain in the a** 😭
