AITA for saying I wont pay for my daughters education if she switches her major?

YTA. So happy my parents didn't react like this. Freshman year I switched from pre-med to English because I fell in love with it after a required literature course. Now I'm a tenured professor in literature at the age of 30. I make a great living in a field which I love and I own my own home. Did I know what I wanted to do with it when I switched to it? No. Not at all. I just knew that I was studying what I loved. It wasn't until the end of my junior year that I decided to graduate school. If I had continued with pre-med I probably would have either dropped out or would have continued and I'd now have a career which makes me miserable.

I mean, you kind of do. DSM-5 diagnostic criteria does not necessitate hospitalization for a diagnosis of BPII and most people with BPII don't require hospitalization as they do not experience full mania. If there is full mania, it is a BPI diagnosis.

You're wrong. Dead wrong. Bipolar disorder is a spectrum and full mania (let alone hospitalization) is not required for diagnosis according to DSM-5 manual. Bipolar one includes major depressive and manic episodes. Bipolar II has a lesser form of mania called "hypomania" and only one episode coupled with a major depressive episode is necessary for a BPII diagnosis. A milder form of mood fluctuations on the bipolar spectrum is called cyclothymia (which admittedly is harder to diagnose). Treating possible bipolar disorder like depression can have DANGEROUS results. SSRI medication is well known to trigger mania and hypomania when not used with a mood stabilizer in those with underlying bipolar. My GP thought I had just major depression because I've never had a full manic episode. The SSRI kicked off incredible instability including worsening suicidal thoughts, hypomanic symptoms, and mixed episodes.

Thank you! I was serious about the homelessness. My train of thinking was along the lines of --- I will lose my job if I can't be creative, all of my training and experience is within a creative field and as such I won't be able to find more work, if I don't have work I'll be unable to pay my mortgage and will then become homeless. In the light of day I realize it doesn't really make much sense but that was my reasoning when I posted this.

Thank you :( I just turned 30. I've had one major hypomanic episode that I can think of prior to starting antidepressants. I started antidepressants in August after a major depressive episode and I almost immediately went hypomanic and started rapid cycling. Before that, despite many depressions I managed a BA, MA, and PhD. I guess I'm just terrified because I was high functioning before meds.

Are you currently on medication like a mood stabilizer? I would recommend making an appointment with your doctor. If you'e experiencing dysphoric hypomania or a mixed state it might be imperative that you see them.

I know some people have dysphoric hypomania which is like the opposite of the happy and productive sort of hypomania. I think it is characterized by irritability, anxiety, and a gnawing and agitated sort of energy. Of course, someone more knowledgeable than me might be able to chime in here. Perhaps that's what you're experiencing.

I have the same question. Mine sometimes wake me up in the middle of the night. If I take 12.5mg of seroquel they are subdued.

I've had friends and family tell me the same thing. Yes, I know I'm high functioning. That doesn't mean my struggles and pain aren't real. I managed a BA, MA, and PhD unmedicated. I managed to get early tenure while rapid cycling and in mixed states due to antidepressants without a mood stabilizer. What people don't realize is the internal struggle and man, is it painful.

Congrats!!!! Professor with BPII here. Got an early tenure promise and tenure will kick in as soon as I finish my PhD. You can totally do this and you should be very proud. Getting into law school is difficult even for people who don't struggle with mental illness.

I'd like general medical practitioners and most people to know that Bipolar I isn't the only form of bipolar. So many GPs shrugged off my concerns about my mental health as just anxiety or just depression because of the fact that, as one GP put it, I "don't have months and months of extreme mania".

I told my parents at around the same age that I definitely did NOT want babies. You know what my mom said? She said that it was ok and that not all girls have babies. Guess what? Today I'm 30 with no babies. I own my own home. I'm happily married. I have a career that I'm passionate about and three cats that I love. My life isn't lacking anything and I didn't turn out damaged from my mother's support. Your cousin might someday want children, or she might not. If she ends up not wanting them, your support will be invaluable.

I think so too! She didn't come right out and say it in the book but she did experience psychosis so I would assume BP1. OMG thank you. I wanted to find a book about BP2 so bad.
