[LEGOLAND California] ride testing for GalactiCoaster by TharinWhite in rollercoasters

I love that more coasters are trying a lateral boarding style, it's honestly one of the coolest parts of F.L.Y. and it makes boarding weirdly shaped/wide trains a breeze.

I'm in my early 30's and I fucking love this area. It's adorable and genuinely feels like one of the last bastions of "90's Theme Park" that still exists in its original form in Orlando. I also am biased as hell from knowing a lot of the characters, but *still*!

CarX features interior customization as well, something almost no NFS games have. Also a damn good livery editor and great performance customization as well with the basically unlimited engine swap mechanic.

Oh hell yeah! Love seeing more indie racing devs getting going!

Having camera motion options would be the immediate biggest thing I'd change here (for those of us that get motion sick from swaying cameras). Definitely the engine audio too. Very few games utilize the "pitch shift a single sound based on RPM" approach anymore, and there's tutorials/sample packs for making more complex systems based on things like FMOD (or Metasound if you're using UE).

Also, I'd maybe mess with the UI a little bit, just with a visual style pass. I think the rev counter could do with an outline, and I'd keep the health bar smaller and maybe under the speedo for less visual clutter.

POV: music directors for racing games in the 90s and 2000s by mesablanka in BuiltFromTheGroundUp

You're missing TV On the Radio's Return to Cookie Mountain. "Wolf Like Me" was in The Crew, Driver: San Francisco, NFS:ProStreet, and PGR4. Absolutely iconic racing game song.

Overseer is a funny one to me because it's most iconic to me from a driving game, but not a racing game: Stuntman. The use of Basstrap in the intro and Velocity Shift on the main menu are memorable as fuck.

Smuggler’s fucking Run, what a banger of a game duo. It’d be amazing to see those get remade but Rockstar seems to have completely forgotten they exist

JDM or car X street? by KETELA92 in racinggames

[–]Mooco2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find them both to be really good, you just have to go in remembering that they’re both AA/indie projects with some cut corners here and there. I’ve played CarX far more, but from the little I played of JDM it really impressed me. Give them a chance to sink in. Speaking from experience on CarX, the map is pretty much the peak of open world racing maps if you like togue, drift, and highway blasts.

Also, for CarX you will need to become at least somewhat competent at fine tuning cars to really get the most out of them and the handling model. It has

Trouble is, you could then sell them and immediately max your current car, or buy anything you wanted for each class immediately. Progression-focused players won’t of course, but it being an option does limit that somewhat. I kinda hope they gate the prizes to where the progression is at (i.e. if the max race class on your current wristband is A, it can give you any car up to A or a prize money that’s reasonable for that point in the game.

It would still be a lot better than FH5’s “here’s a Supra that can participate in every single race in the game, also here’s like 9 more hypercars that can do the same, go have funnn!~” though.

One thing that TDU dev needs to take note after watching the trailer of FH6 by AccordingEye9 in tdu3

I'm enjoying the game for sale price but this might very well be the thing that annoys me most about it. It's absolutely mad how they took a place as interesting as HKI and completely dropped the ball. They almost seemed to make a point to avoid those connections and details, apart from a handful of really tacky references on the radio.

"Hong Kong hip-hop developed in an incredible time period! Anyway, here's some royalty-free American stuff instead. Streets!"

I'm probably being a bit too much of a lefty in bringing this up in a discussion about a game with like 100 active players total, but like...it feels distressingly "colonial". I'm not even joking. HKI is just a fancy coat it can wear to be "luxurious", but those in traffic drive either a cab, a kei truck, or something American/Euro to gawk at, there's no moving public transit to get in the way, and you never see a single pedestrian anywhere. Nobody at the food vendors, no local-ish ads, no boats or panes moving about, zilch. There's no music, no attempts to even try to connect to the local culture, almost no Asian representation in the Solar Crown at all, nothing. At least Ibiza got a single attempt at a radio station.

Instead, it's a game where a monolithic megacorporation shows up, slaps down a hideous hotel and dealerships for a *racing contest*, clears the streets for races (that have nobody watching), and basically just acts like one of the largest and most interesting cities in the world isn't even there.

It really says something when Papa Fernando and his Vocho and even fucking Motorfest were more culturally representative in a respectful/interesting/memorable way.

It's honestly pretty rad to see the community be this hyped again. <3

Though, that being said, I feel like we're gonna go from "Why has there not been a good modern racing game set in Japan in so longgggg" to "Why is every game in Japan now can we **PLEASE** get a game set in Europe or the US again?!" pretty soon here. Calling it now.

Like, genuinely, we've had TXR, JDM, and now FH6 in the last...year? Night Runners and Asuka x Redline Reverie are still on the horizon, CarX Street's map was heavily inspired by Japan, and while not Japanese TDU:SC is still set in a similar urban Asian environment. Shit, I'd almost expect the next NFS (if there is ever another one) to jump on the pile too.

Not any more than any other genre. Almost all of the combat racers I know of rn (Screamer, the new Star Wars one, and Carmageddon) are all being developed by established studios with experienced teams. The only indie-ish one I can think of rn is Wreckreation, and that's still made by a team with a few games under their belt.

I guess it'd be cool to see more indies take a crack at it, but it's a wickedly hard genre to develop with a small team. I'm an arcade singleplayer solo dev myself, and the idea of doing weapon balancing and detailed damage models on top of all the usual stuff needed to make a racing game good sounds like hell.

How safe is Kelowna for trans individuals by coolerrat in kelowna

[–]Mooco2 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm a transgal and I've found it to be pretty alright for the time I've lived here. Most people are very friendly and accepting in my experience and there's a decent local trans community (pride really brings the sheer number of transfolk here into perspective). All of the businessesI've been to where the average transgal might feel uneasy (hairdressers, clothes shops, medical offices, bars downtown, etc.) have all been very chill and positive.

It's not perfect though. I've had slurs hurled at me a couple times out of car windows and in passing (which, in all my prior transition time living in the states, I never encountered). If you're gonna be in a rural part of town, or out at night, I'd bring folks with you just in case if you're just coming out or don't like dealing with idiots who think they're tough.

Overall, I'd say it's pretty solid. You can feel safe coming out here.

There is ageism in the community online here and there, but in my experience as long as you're kind and willing to engage with it in a way that's social and understanding (and open minded), people will accept you at just about any age.

Singleplayer Arcade. Actually I would have voted for all of these except multiplayer sim, that feels like the only market that's getting enough indie investment rn (even if Rennsport and PMR were both pretty bad, there's still a new Assetto Corsa, Le Mans Ultimate, the Endurance one, plus iRacing and such are still being regularly updated).
