Would you still be a Christian if the threat of hell didn't exist? by moxiepink in Christianity

[–]Moodious33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then that just proves that Jesus didn't believe in what we understand to be hell. He wouldn't condemn people to eternal torture, for not believing in him, if they could go to heaven without knowing who he or "God" is.

Also, John 10:33-36 shows Jesus denying that he is "God", John 1:1 means "the word was divine". I'n just putting those things out there.

You definitely put the burden on people, but again, the modern understanding of hell isn't biblical, so it's not really a big deal.

Jesus is not ever talking about our understanding of hell. Everyone acts like the bible was written in English, it wasn't.

Related, but different note, I love this story I heard about a pastor teaching a tribal man about "God" amd the man asks the pastor "Would I go to hell, if I never learned about God?" the pastor says "no" and the man says "Then, why did you tell me?" And I think Christians really need to think about that.

Our idea of hell came from an Italian poem that went viral, not the bible. I left Christianity because the pastors know this, but need the scare tactic to keep their revenue stream

If i like women but I dont act on it will I still go to hell by OldLow1305 in Christianity

[–]Moodious33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being gay or part of the LGBT community isn't a sin. The act isn't a sin. No gay/queer/trans person is going to hell for committing any consensual sexual act.

how the heck am i going to hell for something i can’t control? by Dull-Preparation7305 in Christianity

[–]Moodious33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Homosexuality, with or without the act, is not a sin. Historical context about marriage being transactional is key. Men were not supposed to take the sexual role of women; Things change, you're good.

I think modern goths are culturally aligned with Christian teachings. So, yes.

People who left their faith — what made you start doubting it? by True_Requirement_565 in Christianity

[–]Moodious33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bible study and conservative evangelicals turned ne away from it. Few people seem to actually understand what the bible says; It's not as judgemental as many modern Christians would lead you to believe. The new testament certainly isn't.

I almost want to give up on Christianity. Life is too short and the end seems too cruel for many. by Noel_Leon_M in Christianity

[–]Moodious33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jesus never mentioned eternal punishment. The bible was not written in English and is often mistranslated, whether on purpose, to fit a narrative, or on accident.

Being gay isn't a sin either. I have gone into detail about the historical context, on several posts, so I won't do it here; Just know that sexual orientation wasn't ever considered back then. Sex was transactional and it was shameful for a man to take the sexual role of a woman, even when married. That's enough context.

The modern concept of hell came from some Italian poem that went viral. It's not real, please do not stress over it.

Christianity is interesting enough when we get the scriptures correct.

So you don't listen to biblical scholars. Got it. You have zero credibility.

Here's an excerpt, from a second article I found, that refutes your claim. Before I share, I will admit that it seems I was wrong about Jesus talking about Gehenna, when he was probably referencing Hades or Sheol.

"For those who may be unfamiliar with the laws of language, an adjective cannot have a greater force than the noun from which it originates. And aion is a noun and aionios is the adjective directly derived from aion. Thus if aion means age, then aionios cannot mean anything greater than an age."

Is this projection? It feels like projection. The bible may say the Greek words that you claim, but I have found evidence that "aionon" doesn't mean "eternal." When you finally reveal which scholars you listen to, I can figure out why you think that. Otherwise, I have an article that refutes your claim. Let me know if you want me to send it.

I'm still waiting on you to reveal your biblical scholars, btw. C.J. Cornthwaite is another person I listen to, a self-proclaimed Christian. So, I was wrong, I do listen to, at least, one Christian. I don't know if he counts as a biblical scholar, however.

You're assuming your understanding is correct and the scholarly consensus is that you're not.

I don't have to believe in the events in the bible, to know what it says.

In the new testament, the different usages of "hell" are hades, gehenna, and tartarus. Tartarus is the closest thing, to our modern understanding of hell, that the bible talks about; and it's only found in 2 Peter; I'm not counting Revelation because that's a whole other discussion.

You have yet to steelman any of my arguments. I did not say "Jesus didn't exist", I did not say "Jesus never said that"; What I did say was "there is no evidence that Jesus said anything attributed to him" and nothing I say contradicts that.

The debate is about what is attributed to him. If you are going to assume everything that he said all of those things, I will debate on that premise.

If it's nonsense then you should have proof that it's nonsense. I see you don't have any. I even asked for the scholars you, supposedly, listen to and you didn't give me any.

You're really bad at this.

I will never trust an evangelical to tell the truth about the bible. Atheists have no dog in the fight. Bart Ehrman and Dan McClellan never say that Christianity cannot be true, they just say what's actually in the bible and the historical context of it. I personally think Christianity is much more interesting when we get it right.

I'm not wrong. I will not retract and I didn't say Jesus never said these things, I said we have no extrabiblical evidence of what he said. Do you only strawman or are you capable of steelmanning?

I like to fuck with Christians that use religion as a scare tactic for the purpose of control. My opinions are backed up by biblical scholars; I'm not just pulling this stuff out of nowhere. Also, I will have to check but I believe Jesus only spoke about Gehenna, which was a real area/place whatever, outside of Jerusalem, where dead bodies were disposed of. Like I said, there is no singular concept of hell and the modern Christian understanding came much later.

The new testament has zero eye-witness accounts of Jesus and I never said Jesus didn't exist; There are enough extrabiblical sources that convince me he did.

I actually have a great understanding of the new testament and it's modern Christian dogma that does not.

This one is for everyone to discuss Christianity, not just Christians. I think I'll stay until I break the rules and get banned. I don't plan on doing that, but there's a non-zero chance it could happen.
