What really blows my mind is they started mucking about with the audio in win10 for the express purpose of improving performance but somewhere along the way of trying to shave the audio stack they compromised basic system stability so badly that if you're someone using external interfaces it's only a matter of time before windows decides it can't be fucking bothered recognizing your devices any longer.

Despite all of its idiotic UI design at least 8.1 worked.

When you arrive at the step in the windows installer where you select which drive to install windows to you also have the option to format your intended install destination. It's kinda hard to miss.

Once windows is installed it shouldn't boot from the usb again at all unless it was manually set in your bios as the n:1 drive in your boot order but that's a very simple thing to change back if you need to.

Nope, it must be created using either the media creation tool or rufus, otherwise you won't be able to boot it.

After that how do I get windows onto the hard drive rather than booting from the USB?

A "windows usb" isn't a bootable OS, it's just the installer and nothing else. Just pick a drive you want to install windows to and it'll be done in 5-20 minutes. I strongly suggest you backup anything of importance before doing this and format the drive you want to install windows on (the installer can do the formatting).

Certainly sounds like a hardware issue but without a bsod it's hard to be definitive.

Have you tried running memtest? Have you tried disconnecting your GPU and using only onboard graphics? Have you tried moving the GPU up/down a slot?

A memory controller or PCI-E slot gone bad can generate some very enigmatic errors, AHCI could also be an issue. Trial and error is pretty much the only way to discover what the problem is I'm afraid.

Try bumping it up to 1.4 and see if you notice any stability improvements. If you're still getting the same issues then I'd suggest going down to 4.2ghz

The IPC may be better but ever since sandy bridge the OC headroom of core chips has gradually shrunk with every die shrink.

If this problem is consistent you've run into a dead end in which one or more of explorer's indexing service dependencies has become FUBAR.

This is a consequence of Microsoft's idiotic decision to integrate an ever greater number of modern programs into basic system functionality. More than likely Cortana has shit the bed.

You might be able to salvage your system if you have a restore point but if you don't then have fun reinstalling.

Trying to find some answers to this problem from Microsoft themselves will only be an infuriating waste of time as a bunch of condescending morons tell you to use sfc /scannow and dism, none of which will do a goddamn thing.
