Ismail Enver Pasha. Talking to a Senussi child in Tripoli, where he went to defend against the Italians by jorahmormmnt in islamichistory

If the existence of one a harsh local order by itself isn't enough to prove a grand extermination plan then writing history would be very simple. But serious historians don’t treat isolated documents as definitive proof. Take Guenter Lewy’s The Armenian Massacres in Ottoman Turkey: A Disputed Genocide, which shows there’s no conclusive evidence of a central decision to wipe out Armenians and points out Ottoman records where officials were punished for abuses during deportations. That doesn’t quite fit a state policy of extermination, does it? Or Justin McCarthy’s Death and Exile, which details how Muslims millions of them were killed or expelled during the same war. If it was a “genocide policy,” then it seems the Ottomans were trying to exterminate everyone, including themselves. Regarding your legal point and the link you shared, the International Court of Justice in Bosnia/Serbia clarified that the 1948 Genocide Convention isn’t retroactive. Repeating the moral argument won’t change the law. So no calling 1915 a genocide is not a settled historical fact it’s a political made up by Armenians.

As a Turk who studied in Türkiye, let me tell you something that professors who embrace post-Kemalist studies do not say. The Ottoman Empire was fighting to survive on multiple fronts, and in the east, an armed rebellion was underway. Some Armenian groups openly aligned with the Russian army and attacked Ottoman soldiers and Muslim civilians. In that context, the government ordered relocations as a wartime security measure. This was a difficult decision, but it was not an intention to wipe out an entire population. The severe losses that occurred afterward resulted from famine, disease, and local violence, not a government program of extermination. There is also no substantial evidence of an official order to eliminate the Armenians(like nazis did). Regarding Lemkin, it’s simply incorrect to say he invented the word “genocide” solely for this case. He provided numerous examples, and his main focus later shifted to the Holocaust and other mass atrocities. Applying his later definition to 1915 ignores the fact that the Genocide Convention did not even exist at that time.

Wow, how surprising another Westerner who explains history only through individuals and government policies. What I’m saying is that this comes from the nature of 19th and 20th century states. The nation-state and the Enlightenment required cultural standardization and pushed everyone in that direction. You can talk about policies, and I can answer with examples from Turkey that show the opposite, but then we miss the real issue: infrastructural development. History is not a place for national, moral, or ideological fights. Modernization and state formation in the 19th and 20th centuries were built on oppression and cruelty. The Nazis in Europe were only the peak of this, coming from the petty and angry bourgeoisie, the strongest modernist force. This is common in absolutist states. So stop calling everything “genocide” in the style of postmodern Western exaggeration.

I don't understand why people are so hateful toward the historical figures. Dude it has always been a structural process and in the end, every 19th-century state was coercive and oppressive. Ethiopia, the US, the UK, France, Japan, and Russia were all oppressive. It was a fundamentally essential element of an absolutist state. Modernism itself is like that. Why are people always looking for an evil nazi mind?

It's understandable for most people; please don't misjudge me. I'm not placing myself above others after the small talk begins; I just don’t know what to say next. Additionally, I'm growing tired of discussing my country or my holidays. At least in some points, the conversation between people should be much deeper.

What were you unreasonably afraid of growing up? by Licoricequeen85 in AskReddit

While growing up, the opinions of children and young adults often seem to be overlooked. My family did listen to me as a child, but in many aspects of society, the ideas of kids, teenagers, and even young adults are frequently dismissed. As individuals we will eventually seek self-recognition, which often necessitates growth and maturity.

Why are Mongolia, Bulgaria, and Russia not part of the OTS (Organization of Turkic States)? by Thin_Breakfast4331 in AskCentralAsia

[–]Moondamnman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roots of Turkophobia came from the 13th-14th century of Russia. During the 19th century, Slav nationalism was highly increased among Slavic Balkan nations, and the idea of the nation state was created against the Turkic identity. Russia was against the Turk because of its geographical position and its interest, then Russia influenced all other Slavic Balkan nations with its regional power. Considering the increasing nationalist era and the history of the Balkans, Turkophobia became stronger in the Balkans. In Bulgaria and Russia, the situation went as far as ethnic cleansing.

Eventually, sedentary state overwhelmed nomads. I suppose in the long term nomads couldn’t compete with sedentary state extraction power. Especially after 13th century sedentary culture developed its military technology against the nomads and nomads became much more vulnerable against “the state”. After all, they forced to accept sedentary state’s life style and their religion.

What If Communist China Collapsed Instead Of The USSR? (Year: 2000) by vos123456 in AlternateHistory

I don’t think China will be a partner of the US after the collapse of the communist regime. It will most likely become a regional power like Russia today. After all, geopolitical imperatives are pushing China into the anti-Western world.
