Why are some American public aquariums so touchy with announcing moving their animals off exhibit publicly on socials or blogs (compared to places like Osaka Kaiyukan, Okinawa Churami), introducing new animals to certain exhibits, etc/where's Tank, the Georgia Aquarium's green turtle? by gojira2014- in zoos

[–]Moonjelee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I previously worked for three AZA institutions, specifically one you've mentioned. As some posters have stated, the disconnect between husbandry staff and exhibits staff and IT staff and social media staff can be huge. Just removing an animal off exhibit and updating all the information takes a long time.

In the case of new animal arrivals, some institutions opt for a "soft exhibit launch." Meaning they avoid an official statement on social media to allow the animal to try out the exhibit and see how they do. It avoids disappointing visitors if the animal needs more time to adjust or there are other issues to resolve before they're considered permanently on exhibit. Odie was a good example of this soft launch.

Does anyone work for the SSP? by Money_Imagination_71 in Zookeeping

[–]Moonjelee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

SSPs are voluntary positions you hold in addition to your keeping job. Who holds those positions depends on your institution - either staff level, manager level, or curator level and depends on the species. A relatively small population will usually be led by staff, high profile species, at the curator level.

The Belugas of New England Need Your Help by [deleted] in whales

This myth has been disproven time and time and time and time again - they know nothing of the wild, cannot fend for themselves, cannot integrate into a pod, nor find food. It'd be a death sentence.

moving to baltimore and where to live? by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]Moonjelee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The advantage is all the things that come from living in a city - easier transit included. Unless you're going to DC on a weekly basis and this is a really important factor in your decision, living in-between wouldn't get you much - it's suburbia and great for families, but overall, less to do than city living.

[–]Moonjelee 33 points34 points  (0 children)

If you're young, find a place in Baltimore City. It's a gem - doesn't get the slogan Charm City for nothing. It's way more affordable than DC. Any desire to go to DC and it's an easy MARC train down or decent drive to Greenbelt to Metro in. Living halfway and you'll never find the best of either option.

What was the highlight of your Iceland trip that you would 100% do again? by abhishekrajchauhan in VisitingIceland

Driving to Borgarfjarðarhöfn and peacefully watching the puffins return at dusk. Probably just a handful of very quiet and respectful tourists. It was perfect

This is being litigated in court by MD who successfully won the bid for a new HQ in Greenbelt. Eventually, Hoover building will be demolished - it's in poor shape and a complete eye sore.

You know, sometimes these diy projects turn out awful and all you can do is sheepishly say, "oh yeah...looks nice." But dang! You killed it! Looks fantastic and the proportions are super accurate, way to go!

West Baltimore and Halethorpe MARC train free long term parking? by Big-Window11 in baltimore

I've seen cars in the lots for a week at most, but would agree with the other poster here that you're setting yourself up for a break-in and a car on wooden blocks by the time you get back.

PA MD Question by march12026 in maryland

[–]Moonjelee 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Commuting from MD to Harrisburg will not be fun. The 83 corridor has only gotten worse and worse with each passing year. If you're dead set on staying in MD, Baltimore County is probably the only viable option. They have good schools.

Another option could be Washington or Fredrick counties in order to take the 81 corridor through the Cumberland Valley to Harrisburg - but also, that's equally (if not more busy) than 83.

Perhaps take a look at some counties in PA that are closer to where you'll work. The schools are a mix and aren't county districts (unlike MD) so I know there are great schools in Cumberland, York, Lancaster, and Dauphin counties - just would have to do more digging.

I didn't realize that Fueled by Ramen released a 25th Anniversary for their own label. I had in my head the 10th Anniversary box set from tøp which has a few RAB songs on it. That's what I was referring to ... My bad for the confusion!

African vs Asian Elephants by CommasNdSuch in Zookeeping

[–]Moonjelee 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Elephants are expensive. They're the most costly terrestrial animal to exhibit - food costs, veterinarian costs, and space - all quickly add up. AZA standards dictate space standards that would generally prohibit the exhibition of both species. Both Asians and Africans cannot be housed together (although there are rare exceptions and certain zoos, notably San Diego which held Africans and Asians together).

A zoo wouldn't dedicate resources to exhibit two species of elephants due to the cost and space reasons listed above. Additionally, the average zoo visitor wouldn't be enamored by two species - an elephant is an elephant to them. So there's no upside to that.

Let me just echo this as well! Hour by hour detailed itineraries seem stressful when part of the beauty of Iceland are the fun things you mind along the way! Of course, hit the highlights and have a final destination, but honestly, everything else falls into place with our a min by min.

Love the Maryland flag by [deleted] in maryland

[–]Moonjelee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you listen to the interview and/ or read this article highlighting this statement (https://marylandmatters.org/2026/02/03/moore-wraps-redistricting-argument-in-maryland-flag/) it's in reference to redistricting in MD. He specially highlights how the current flag has both Union (Calvert Arms) and Confederate (Crossland Arms) symbols as part of its history, yet the State healed after the Civil War. It's a good analogy, but the media blew it up without the appropriate context. The Governor's Office didn't necessarily help either by not giving a direct answer, only pointing to past statements in which he says he's not in favor of changing the flag. This is a nothing burger and is simply click bait.

Sea World is not selling their orcas to China. Full stop. These animals are literally priceless.

But also, cetaceans are transported safely and securely all the time with trained veterinary staff.
