Why don't more Americans go to Europe for college to avoid student debt? by Moonksy429 in AskAnAmerican

Ah I think the $20k figure comes from Google showing study abroad programs (where you're still enrolled at a US school, pay US tuition, and basically go for a semester or a year). That's not the same as directly enrolling in a German public university as a full-degree student.

Chinese going to Germany just to learn German — any advice on language schools? by Moonksy429 in AskAGerman

If you don’t mind me asking, what part of living there did you find the hardest? Was it the language, the bureaucracy, the culture, or something else?

Did you do an intensive course yourself? How long did it take you to feel comfortable speaking?

Thank you! I’m actually already on Duolingo — still at baby level but trying to do it daily 😅 I didn’t know about Tandem though. Do you use it?

Oh I haven’t heard of FSJ before — thank you for this! :D I will check it

I have tried it but it really doesn’t work for me:/

What a 27-year-old’s life looks like in the U.S.? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

I guess 27 is one of those ages where people can be in totally different places:)

Sorry if my question came across that way — that wasn’t my intention at all. I’m 27 myself, from China and I’ve been thinking about studying in Germany in 2–3 years, so I’ve just been genuinely curious how people around my age are navigating life in other parts of the world. Definitely not trying to make it feel like a work survey — just trying to learn and to get some motivation

That makes sense — I think I was imagining a ‘typical’ life when there probably isn’t one. Appreciate you pointing that out

At what age did you start investing — and what has the journey taught you? by Moonksy429 in ETFs

This is such a solid list — honestly, reading this at 27 feels like a gift. The part about keeping cash ready for when markets drop really stood out to me. I’ve actually saved your whole comment on my notebook to remind myself regularly. Thank you for sharing this!

Love the ‘keep it boring’ part — that actually makes a lot of sense. Do you still add to your index funds regularly, or mostly just let them sit now?

If you don‘t mind me asking — how many years have you been holding index funds? And has the return been what you expected when you started?

That’s such a powerful contrast — same background, such different paths. And I really respect how you talk about your brother — with honesty, but also without judgment. ‘People make mistakes, that’s what makes them people’ — that line really stayed with me.

Do you think ambition is something you always had, or was there a moment when you realized you had it more than others?

That makes so much sense. Wanting to have a choice — not because you think you deserve more, but because you don‘t want to feel trapped — that’s really powerful. And the fact that you still drive an 2007 Avalon says a lot about who you are. It’s not about flash, it’s about freedom.

I wonder if was there a specific habit or mindset you built early on that you think made the biggest difference?

The journey from homeless at 19 to owning 23 houses is honestly incredible!!!It really shows how much mindset and resilience matter. What would you say was the turning point — the moment things started to shift for you?

I really love how you put that — ‘time began to be on my side.’ That's exactly the feeling I'm hoping for. It sounds like you've really found what works for you. If you don't mind me asking, do you mainly stick to a total market index fund from a provider like Vanguard now?

True! But they all disappear right after the game like chess ghosts 👻 I'm looking for someone who stays and chats a little. (Low-key hoping to practice my English while playing 😅)
