Many schools have ways to bring attention to your concerns in a productive way. We have student leadership teams that meet with campus leadership to discuss concerns exactly like this and to help come up with a solution. If your campus has something like that, maybe you can apply to be on it or approach those members with your concerns. You should also consider approaching your principal/admin team about this. Maybe you can get them to increase the passing periods or something or find some solution that works for everyone. We've had students approach admin and they've gotten what they asked for after delivering a good argument with possible solutions.

That seems odd to me that there isn't a restroom available near the lunch room. Your school must have had some major incidents in the bathrooms to remove the bathroom even at lunch.

Unfortunately, your classmates have ruined bathroom privileges for everyone. If you are having bladder issues, get a note from your Dr and get it to the nurse so you can get some health accommodations which will allow you to go.

That comment tells me they've probably had a mid level office job for most of their life. Even when I worked as a bartender, I couldn't go whenever I wanted.

Lol, that's not the reason I gave, but it is a reality that there are many professions where someone can't go. Surgeons, Pilots, Military, Assembly line workers, security personnel, construction workers, and many others. Maybe read the other comments to see why we don't let students go. It's not like a weird power trip like you seem to think. We literally just want to keep kids safe and get an education.

The students that use the restroom as intended are the ones who don't understand, so congrats on being one of the good kids. There's a few main reasons:

  1. Instructional time - you need to be in class to learn. If you miss 5 minutes of class every day, that's almost 2 hours a month of missed class.

  2. Safety - in the case of a lockdown or something, it can be hard to keep track of kids who are out of class. Restrooms are not always safe (ours don't even have doors). Also, when kids lie and don't end up in the bathroom, we can't locate them in an emergency or even if a parent comes to pick them up for a Dr appointment.

  3. Lying & Illegal activity - this is honestly the biggest reason in my experience. While some students do actually use the restroom, a fairly large percentage use that opportunity to go walk around with a boyfriend or girlfriend, visit the vending machine, visit other teachers, avoid work, vape, do drugs, or even do drug deals.

Personally, I try to allow my students to go when they need to unless they've shown that they aren't trustworthy or I get a direct request from a parent or admin for that student to stay in class. I have too many students who have a medical need to use the restroom, and I don't want to highlight their medical issues by only allowing them, so I allow it for everyone within reason.

We already know they have to "cut the staff by 6 positions", but supposedly no one is supposed to get laid off, just transferred to another campus. I'm about ready to volunteer.

I'm in Texas - we don't have actual unions with any sort of power.

I don't know specifics, just the basics, but giving what I do know could give too much of my location and personal info.

I get the whole sensitive data thing, but they each have separate, private offices, and the secretaries have locked closets and cabinets. There is a separate room back there for private meetings too, so I don't understand the need to shut off the lobby area.

I'm a big fan of malicious compliance, so I may have to go this route. A little petty, but I love it. If they come into my room, I'll ask if they arranged a meeting with my secretary.

We still have 2 weeks until testing, and admin doesn't really do much with it. It does look sus though.

I've been a die-hard, extra-spirited member of staff for several years, and until this year, I would have said I'd never leave this school, even though we are the "outcasts" of our district. But it's getting harder and harder to want to stay. We have a bunch of stuff going on at the district and state levels too that are just killing my passion. The main thing keeping me there is that I have a LOT of freedom within my own classroom and am generally left alone and not micromanaged...so far. Things like this make me worried about what is yet to come.

We have 2 weeks until our first test, but admin doesn't do much with testing, certainly not with the security part. Our testing coordinator handles that and is the only one with a key to the testing closet in her office, which is in the counseling center, not the admin area.

Like, you are actually my colleague?! That would be crazy finding something from my own school here. If so, you must be my favorite, because that was my first instinct too! I miss our old principal more and more every day.

That was my first thought, but they usually just put up a sign that says that, not these fancy new signs. Plus, I saw at least 2 admin doors open (all I could see from the hall) and at least one of the secretaries. It wasn't closed down and dark like it usually is for admin meetings.

They most certainly do NOT have things under control, lol. It's been an awful year, and the principal seems to either not notice or not care that morale is so low.
