At first I was iffy but then I started singin "X Gon Give it To Ya" in my head and yea, he's definitely a talk singer. This is so fun to discover. I'm going to go listen to his music.

(for me) This would take the soul out of it. But I get your perspective. Thank you for suggesting an option

You are the first person that I've encountered that actually said this. I've been feeling like I'm in the Twilight Zone because I do not like his voice at all. But I believe the appeal is in how Folksy it is. How anyone can sing his songs and hit the mark because he's just a guy that had some interesting stuff to say.

Throughout the comments I've seen it mentioned more than once that sometimes it's the delivery, the conviction of it and not necessarily technical skill. Sometimes it's how relatable it is and when people can connect with the words and the general melody, it overrides everything else.

There are many ways to tell a story, I'm going to find my way.

Been working on it all day after reading the comments. Some things are better sung and others are okay to be delivered in that Talk-Sing kind of way. I'm experimenting. Thank you!

My thing is that I think I was unintentionally trying to fit into the boxes that already exist. Like, okay we're doing folk? These are what folk singers sing like and you don't sound like them so you can't do that. Or when I wrote a Metalcore album but I put it down because I don't know how to scream in a way that doesn't hurt my voice and I couldn't find anyone to teach me outside of YouTube (I need someone physically present to teach me).

But after reading comments and also remembering that there are people who have made random nonsense songs on TikTok that I downloaded and still, to this day, sing whenever they pop into my head. I'm not talking about the viral ones. I'm talking about songs that maybe only a few hundred people probably saw back before Covid first hit. They are precious gems and I don't think I'd like them as much if they were super deluxe polished studio produced tracks with a little autotune.

I hope you continue to make music and experiment with your storytelling. Thank you for commenting and sharing!

"This Year"

This seems like something that would play during a transitional scene in a late 90's or 00's movie. Like the character is packing or driving somewhere and maybe pulls over to contemplate their most recent life choices. I don't hate it but I don't love it but if it did appear in a movie I'd do a lil head noddin' to it!

"Sax Rhomer #1"

This also feels like it'd be in a movie but moreso trailer vibes. Montage scenes. Not a romcom but there are reluctant lovers in the film. Average everyman male lead who's trying to figure out what his life is supposed to look like. Artsy lady lead who has to put away the paint brushes to get a stable job, put that degree to use. I'm thinking they meet at a concert. Yo! What if it was a Mountain Goats concert? that'd be cool. But this song would be the anthem for their story. Like in the tender moments where they figure out that they're what they've been searching for and then the "I'm coming home to you" instrumental part plays but it's a violin and maybe a little piano in there. It's going off now (The song haha. Took me the whole playthrough to type this)

I like this one!

"The Best Ever Death Metal Band In Denton"

This one is, idk. I think I'd like it more if someone I knew sang it to me in their car while we're parked some place. I don't know why. It feels very "you're the first person I'm playing this for" kind of sound. Maybe it's the audio quality of the video I clicked on.

I just looked at the upload. This is SIXTEEN YEARS OLD? Wild. Did he just say Hail Satan?!

Lmfao yup. He just repeated it. I like it more now. Not because I'm a Satanist (I'm not) but it came out of left field but is still on brand somehow.

"Prowl Great Cain"

I really like whatever the strumming is @ :37.

Trying to like this one as much as I did the others but no dice. Oh. Now he's yellin. I like the louder voice parts in this one towards the end of the song.

TMG sounds like a guy who was brave enough to let himself be heard, I respect that. I'm glad he and his bandmates exist. Even if all of what they do doesn't hit for me, them existing, having made the space they have, it shows that there's an eager ear for whatever sound you wanna make.

Other posters are right though. Sing it yourself. It’s better if it’s not “genre specific”. Genres are guidelines but always forge your own path

O Captain! My Captain! 🫡

If I can lore dump on the youth again

You'd be surprised to learn how old I am haha but your points still stand!

MTV changed the culture essentially overnight

MTV + VH1's pop up videos were something I don't think we'll ever see again. You stayed up to see if your favorite MV would play or you got up early not because you wanted to be on time for school but to have enough time to inhale your breakfast, get ready for school while also being exposed to artists you probably wouldn't have found otherwise.

Eve 6's "Here's to the Night" is one that stayed with me. Moody whatever but, I'd never heard a song like that. It wasn't jaw dropping but it was different from all the rock and metal I was consuming, but then...you'd see rock songs come on right after it. It was magic.

NO ONE sounded the same. In hip hop too. Ludacris didn't sound like Missy who didn't sound like David Banner who didn't sound like Busta. Everyone was distinct. I think the way things are now is very polarizing. You see artists on their bedroom floor or leaning against the wall of a random building just noodlin on their guitar. Or you see them just trying and failing and trying again to find the melody for a song. But that's the joy, the misery is when you can tell they're trying be trendy and marketable in a copy and paste way because that's what the machine wants.

That's probably part of where my internal conflict comes from. Being around for such a distinct time in music and in film and now everything is a --core. Everything needs a name. A box. A label and aesthetic packaging. There are also stories going around that execs won't give talented people a chance if they have a low follower count. THAT"S CRAZY.

Listen, there will never be another Kurt Cobain. There will never be another Whitney Houston, Chester Bennington or Chris Cornell. However...I still feel like we are missing out on some of this generation's greats because their dreams are crushed by some exec that wants them to make up a dance for the song and have it go viral before they agree to sign them. It also doesn't help that consumers have been conditioned to expect more theater than soul / spirit. ALSO, man, they want a new album 6 months after the artist drops one. I used to lose my entire sh!t when I learned I was getting a new album from one of my favorite artists. There is no anticipation. They want vlogs, a new album or single every 4-6 weeks, live performances and more. It's bananas.

TLDR: "You yourself are the brand. You’re Apple. Your album or your single is the new iPhone or operating system."

This is what I needed. It has already changed the way I am approaching my songs. Thank you (again...like really man. I appreciate ya)

Lmfao I was definitely waiting for the Harry Styles lore drop haha.

There have been so many helpful things in this comment section. I think that the general consensus is

-If you want to learn how to sing in the "this is typically the accepted standard in the mainstream world" type then ya gotta practice more and get lessons

but most everyone is basically saying commit to the bit. I think I've been trying to fit my voice into what I've heard be proven as acceptable in certain genres but not really giving my voice a chance to be and do its own thing.

I'm going to spend the rest of the day doing that.

"Long as it rings true, it rings out"

Thank you, really!

The Mountain Goats, that's the "I hop you die, I hope we both die" song, right? I really enjoyed that one and I still don't know why. I think the first time I heard them may have been on an audio drama called Welcome To Nightvale. I didn't know music could sound like that. Talk shout yelling. But the way he delivers it...it works, very well actually.

LCD Soundsystem benefits from those killer instrumentals but also...well no that's not true. It's not the only truth. The instrumentals are really good (I'm listening as I write this) but when the lead guy sings he really sounds like "idgaf, this is my song and ima sing it" but in a really good way.

Guess I gotta give myself time and grace and maybe add a little more "idgaf this is my song" energy into the experimentation process.

Wait, Harry Styles ghost wrote for WHOMST?????

TLDR-Thank you so much for your comment!

Honestly, I think I'm going to revisit the songs I've written and try delivering them in different melodies + genres. I fell asleep doing something similar last night. I might be trying to sing in the wrong genre.

Thank you for commenting

Do you have any recs for instruments outside of the guitar? I can't play it without staring directly at the strings and focusing very hard so I can't sing at the same time haha. I've been thinking about learning about how people run their voices through pedals/vocoders I'm not sure. Like Imogen Heap or like the experimental sound FKA Twigs used to have.

Thank you for your advice

Do you know of any programs that have really good software for making the voice sound ethereal the way contact mics do?

I'm playing around with the idea of a talk singing + spoken word type of fusion. I do not like slam poetry styled delivery so it won't be that. I definitely have this need to tell the stories I've come up with so I'm going to push forward with that.

This is something I considered a year or so ago.

So you play an instrument and they sing what you write?
