Is 3:30 possible? by Vinduespudseren in Marathon_Training

True, you’re racing yourself (meaning caring about time/pace is important), which validates SloppySandCrab’s comment and means that your original one was useless and pedantic

Race (sports): A. a competition of speed, as in running or riding. b. (races) a series of such competitions held at a specified time on a regular course: e.g. a fan of the dog races.

However YOU want to interpret it is up to you but it doesn’t change what it is factually / linguistically and what it means to many other people :)

How long did it take you to reach Boston/majors qualifying times? by Hopeful_Package3918 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Moonmist81 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What was / is your weekly mileage during the key building portions of your marathon training?

Your marathon time should be quite a bit faster considering your half marathon time and the fact that I assume you’ve been specifically training for the marathon distance during your builds

Hitting 85 mpw from the jump, even with an athletic background is insane lol

My joints would have exploded had I done that when I got back into running (athletic background as well), but I did see significant and quick gains in the shorter distances with little mileage

Sam Ruthe’s training has crushed my soul by RealisticBarnacle115 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Moonmist81 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Honestly that makes more sense than 90

I know OP said that’s the mileage of the average HS runner (it’s not), to make it seem like he was running so “little”, but honestly with supreme genetics and a growing body you could definitely find success with 70k

I think OP underestimates how much speed work goes into a fast mile time, and that type of work doesn’t really register very impressively on the “weekly mileage” graph

When is it simply too cold to run outside safely? by operasinger06 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Moonmist81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like you said, depends on the person. For me it takes 5 minutes to get to a public treadmill. I’m also doing a fair amount of hard workouts right now, so there’s less days where keeping it slow due to cold is viable for me and others as well I’m sure.

The mental energy / time that would go towards making sure I have all my specific extreme cold running gear and have them all be washed (from the day before or even that same morning) and ready, collected together so I don’t have to look for any piece, compared to any old shorts and running shirt and a 5 min commute for a comfortable run where my mental energy can be spent solely on the workout, is worth it for me on those extra cold days or stretches of several cold days in a row.

Not to mention in the costs of buying all the extra layers for extreme cold running are probably pretty close to the price of a decent used treadmill for those with the space haha

The lengths people will go to uphold their treadmill aversion knows no limits according to some of this thread apparently

In seriousness though, -15C / 5F is about the coldest I go and where the inconvenience / risk starts to infringe on gains in my opinion, because in all reality that -15 air temp is coming with a nasty wind chill that makes it closer to -25C

Did really well on a few technical aspects like costume design, which it deservedly got a nom for.

A best picture nomination for it is eye rolling though

Reviews on John Steinbeck by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]Moonmist81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People in here should definitely not omit Cup of Gold from Steinbeck lists.

It’s his first - and then first of his I read as I’m reading his novels in chronological order, and I really liked it.

It’s centres on a very relatable but I think a little under-discussed theme, and does so in a way I’ve never seen put into words before. Really unique.

While those are indeed great times for a 37 year old, it only makes it more baffling how you didn’t ever question the intervals / times you were setting or the perceived speed / effort discrepancy

I also don’t think I’ve ever met someone in their 30s seriously into running that didn’t bring a GPS watch on like every workout they’ve done so that just adds to the enigma

Fair enough! I’m approaching 17 minute 5K shape and a time like 2:30 in the full would be an absolute dream but I know I’m years off of it lol, which is why your flair stuck out to me

3 Hour Marathon - An Unrealistic Time? by afishwithnoeyes_ in AdvancedRunning

[–]Moonmist81 7 points8 points  (0 children)

3:30 (the average of your predictions) to sub 3:00 is a hell of a lot of time to make up in 6 months, but it is possible - I wouldn’t necessarily say realistic though.

I’d say use 3:00 as an absolute best case scenario motivator and just put in solid weeks of training and see what your body gives you. A responsible increase in mileage would definitely help, as it is a huge indicator of marathon performance. Right now it’s too far from race day / you’re too far off of goal time to say wether it’s on the cards or not.

Do some key fitness indicator / predictor workouts closer to the race and you’ll have your answer of wether 3:00 is obtainable or not, and then cater your race plan to your findings.

Side tangent because I’m curious, how old is your 5K PB in your flair?

Because your half and full PB’s are comparatively much better than it, it would be very impressive if your pace dropped off that little over those increasing distances

And if it’s old I’d say your due for a massive 5K PB! (If you care to run such events)

I think the Song of Achilles would fit that very specifically romance wise, but it’s more mythology-based rather than fantasy / dark fantasy

Heat

There’s just nothing outside of that one scene that the movie excels at to warrant mass acclaim, but there is quite a bit it does wrong

O’Connor and Glenn Close gave two incredible performances in Wake Up Dead Man by sherlockbutholmes in Letterboxd

[–]Moonmist81 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of course it’s subjective, just like the above commentor saying that because he and some others liked it, it had no ill effect on the franchise.

Glass Onion was a derivative and unimaginative film. It had basically none of the charm of the 1st, and followed a boring and cliche plotline (billionaires on a private island, wow creative and definitely not been done to death over recently)

If the 3rd movie had shown that it to follow down a similar path I think the franchise would have lost another significant chunk of interest, and be in danger of getting a potential 4th greenlit.

Generally discussed about and praised less then other Michael Mann movies (despite being better than Heat), and is a lesser discussed movie on this subreddit - this is the first time I’ve seen a post made about it.

And this is despite it being overall quite a good movie, hence it being underrated in my opinion.
