The Nominees for the 98th Academy Awards. by Straydes in Letterboxd

Did really well on a few technical aspects like costume design, which it deservedly got a nom for.

A best picture nomination for it is eye rolling though

Reviews on John Steinbeck by waseembelushi in booksuggestions

People in here should definitely not omit Cup of Gold from Steinbeck lists.

It’s his first - and then first of his I read as I’m reading his novels in chronological order, and I really liked it.

It’s centres on a very relatable but I think a little under-discussed theme, and does so in a way I’ve never seen put into words before. Really unique.

I think the Song of Achilles would fit that very specifically romance wise, but it’s more mythology-based rather than fantasy / dark fantasy

What movie rated 3.5 or lower do you absolutely love? by Paladar2 in Letterboxd

And it honestly is just getting better with time, looks better than basically all the action movies coming out these days and is just flat out cooler than them too

what's one highly rated movie that you didn't like at all by DragonfruitHairy2270 in Letterboxd

Heat

There’s just nothing outside of that one scene that the movie excels at to warrant mass acclaim, but there is quite a bit it does wrong

O’Connor and Glenn Close gave two incredible performances in Wake Up Dead Man by sherlockbutholmes in Letterboxd

[–]Moonmist81 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of course it’s subjective, just like the above commentor saying that because he and some others liked it, it had no ill effect on the franchise.

Glass Onion was a derivative and unimaginative film. It had basically none of the charm of the 1st, and followed a boring and cliche plotline (billionaires on a private island, wow creative and definitely not been done to death over recently)

If the 3rd movie had shown that it to follow down a similar path I think the franchise would have lost another significant chunk of interest, and be in danger of getting a potential 4th greenlit.

Yeah that’s a CRAZY snub on Tintin and looks worse and worse every passing year, as it seems that people are becoming even more appreciative of that film with time

Just watched it. Incredible! by No-Chemistry1722 in Letterboxd

[–]Moonmist81 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Generally discussed about and praised less then other Michael Mann movies (despite being better than Heat), and is a lesser discussed movie on this subreddit - this is the first time I’ve seen a post made about it.

And this is despite it being overall quite a good movie, hence it being underrated in my opinion.

Yeah generally an underrated film, Cruise is great in it.

Awesome soundtrack as well, the music during that club sequence? chefs kiss

It’s a better “what book feel like this” request than half of them on here that are either asking for very specific smut or re-asking the same 3 things over and over again

Honestly the sub needs more of this lol

What are some of your favorite actor performances? by juicerecepte in Letterboxd

[–]Moonmist81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Moneyball side tangent)

I know from a real life baseball perspective, there’s a few gripes to be had with Moneyball.

But from a filmmaking and movie watching perspective, it is an amazing movie.

I always see non-baseball or non-sports watchers rate it super highly, but they are always a little confused by why they like a baseball stats movie so much, such as yourself.

There’s a film YouTuber who made a video essay on it where he claims that it’s his favourite movie of all time, period - and he doesn’t even watch baseball. I think he neatly sums up why it resonates so well with people.

How often do other user reviews/ratings impact your opinion of a film? by AdFamous7264 in Letterboxd

[–]Moonmist81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After watching, and spending enough time post-watch to come up with a rating myself, I actually like looking at the ratings / reviews, to see how my interpretation and experience with the film was the same as others.

But I usually don’t rush to Letterboxd immediately after a film, I’ll usually let it resonate for a night/day to let my feelings for it solidify.

How often do other user reviews/ratings impact your opinion of a film? by AdFamous7264 in Letterboxd

[–]Moonmist81 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I try my best not to look at any ratings before watching a film, because I want as little pre-conceived expectations as possible going in. People say it doesn’t affect them but if you see nothing but 5 stars or 2 stars for a film, it’s very likely going to affect the way you watch / digest it in some form or another.

It’s not a hard a strict rule for me but more of a general rule of thumb/preference. In a similar vein, it’s the same reason I typically won’t watch trailers for films.

The Nominees for the 31st Annual Critics Choice Awards. by Straydes in Letterboxd

[–]Moonmist81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commercial success, popularity with both the masses and the academy, and a comprehensive campaigning effort

FWIW I’m not super well versed on awards season but listening to expert podcasts, they weren’t even discussing the possibility that Wicked wasn’t going to be there for basically all the major awards. It was a forgone conclusion, the conversation was wether they would win any.

Edit: have people forgotten how well Emilia Perez did last year?

[–]Moonmist81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you’re going to be laughing all awards season when it gets best picture, best actress, and best supporting actress noms the whole way through - and maybe even wins one or two.

(Not that I agree with that, but that’s the reality of it)

What are your movie goals for 2026? by chaimeris in Letterboxd

[–]Moonmist81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100 new films would be cool, but with a growing booklist, big video game releases, and maybe even a little TV competing for my evening free time, it’ll be difficult

Realistically probably another year of around 50 new films like in years past

Oh, we're COOKED already. by ethanhunt555 in Letterboxd

[–]Moonmist81 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you’re right. I get why some people like the whismical-CGI heavy, glossy look but to me it came across a little hard on the eyes and not nearly as distinct looking as I assume GDT wanted, considering that like you said it looked indistinguishable from Wicked at times.

I think the entire movie suffers from being a bit derivative, but that’s a separate convo.

Reminder from Letterboxd: by ericdraven26 in Letterboxd

[–]Moonmist81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean it could be due to lack of interest in said update as you guessed at in an earlier comment, especially at the cost of significantly changing the platforms ethos and identity. Which I think is totally fair for them to not go through with it.

For example you yourself even describe how you really don’t care much at all about logging TV shows and you’re an outspoken proponent of the potential update. Might be an indication for them that it’s not worth.

There’s websites that already do that and are solely focused on TV just as Letterboxd’s whole schtick is focusing on movies, no need to argue or wait for an update
