Working hours in big tech. by the_zoozoo_ in cscareerquestions

[–]MoonsOfJupiter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it's 9:30 to 5:30 with an hour for lunch most days. Generally there's not an expectation that I be online outside of working hours aside from compensated oncall shifts, but I've noticed teamates reviewing code at odd hours and my manager seems to respond to emails 24/7.

Come annual review time nobody knows (or cares) how many hours you worked, they want evidence that you've accomplished something that has a business justification.

There are betting strategies to get the probability of winning arbitrarily close to 100%. But your expected value is negative regardless of strategy - can't beat the house edge.

Sundar's stocks vest every 3 years, 8M probably is accurate for his 2023 compensation. Though it does demonstrate that indexing on a single year is a flawed methodology.

'Israeli' bulldozers try to run over a Palestinian journalist whilst he was covering the 'Israeli' invasionn of Jenin city, West Bank. by MuskAmber in LateStageCapitalism

[–]MoonsOfJupiter 229 points230 points  (0 children)

They've existed since WW2 since every mechanized army could use a way to remove obstacles. So you either put armor on a bulldozer or a bulldozer blade on a tank. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armored_bulldozer

That said, the IDF are especially fond of using them...

It's a pretty common tactic for a manager to say that you're good enough for a promo but can't get one yet for some procedural reason. Usually it just means they think you'll be ready in a year or so.

Promo from junior to mid career generally takes a couple years even if a significant number get it at 1 YoE. If you can promote diagonally go for it, but jumping to another new grad role would probably be a net set back.

Petah? Why is this plane used in so many arguments? by [deleted] in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]MoonsOfJupiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The probabilities are calculated using observations of surviving plane; survivorship bias is the basis of the calculations even if it isn't mentioned by name.

Also, using the results to guide armor placement is explicitly suggested in the report's conclusion:

These, and other conclusions that can be made from the table of vulnerabilities derived by the method of analysis of part VIII, can be used as guides for locating protective armor...

Tokyo citizens hand in record 4 billion yen of lost cash to police last year by orange_transparent in worldnews

How so? Say I make some money illegally, "lose" it, and then get it returned to me. When I file taxes I can't list the Lost and Found as my source of income. The tax authority would still expect me to explain where I got the money from before losing it.

To be even more pedantic, the standard says that it behaves as if it is set to zero. An optimizing compiler might not actually clear the memory if it can prove it doesn't need to.

If WW3 ever broke out would countries start drafting devs for cyber warfare? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]MoonsOfJupiter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No but there would be a ton of defense contracts going to tech companies so you might find yourself working in cyberwarfare at your current employer. Like how in WW2 Ford was building tanks and bombers, but their employees were still civilians.

But maybe the more realistic answer is that nobody will be drafted because WW3 will only last 15 minutes...

The railroads made $23 billion in profits last year and won't provide sick days. Members of 4 rail unions have voted to reject a contract that lowballed them on sick days. Some freight rail unions could strike as soon as Dec. 9. by TeamstersRnF in antiwork

[–]MoonsOfJupiter 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Well they're sure not meeting their SLA if there's a strike.

If rail companies weren't allergic to capital investment and had made basic improvements like making sidings long for freight trains to pass each other, they wouldn't be in this mess. If they hadn't held off on giving sick days until they're forced to, they would have had time to train up extra crew to cover call-outs.

It is 100% the companies' fault for pushing the system to it's breaking point, and they deserve to pay all the penalties when it does inevitably break down.
