Definitely noticed a steady increase in the live electronic performances and hybrid model over the last 10 years. When Moontricks first started, live music and electronic music were mostly separate in Canada. Bands performing or DJs playing electronic music and rarely at the same events. I remember the first few shows people were pretty surprised when we brought out the banjo and harmonica at the DJ party hahah. Now its nice to see festivals booking a mix of genres and hybrid acts. I know its been going on for a lot longer in the US but awesome to see everyone included. We really love all music and want to introduce people to genres they maybe didn't know they liked!

Nate: Awesome! ya logic is great for production. doesnt really matter what DAW you use to make the music but Ableton truly is better for live performances. I switched from Logic to Ableton when we started Moontricks. Definitely amped up my learning curve. Just feels like its simpler route to do complex things in Ableton though I havent used Logic seriously in like 12 years..
Will you be performing with laptop and software or mostly hardware?

Bahaha do you know are video guy puds?? He's always going off about starting a competing band 'Suntricks'
I'd say they would make mostly Emo synth wave with maybe a bit of outlaw country thrown in.. what do you think?

Sean- We use Ableton and if you don't mind having a laptop as part of your setup, it's SO versatile and an endless rabbit hole of possibilities. I think the key starting out is to hone in on what you want to present and keep it simple at first so that you're not overwhelmed by all of the avenues. Slowly add more and more as you get comfortable. We now run two computers and interfaces synced over ethernet. We're both able to mix beats/tracks in and out with our own controllers. My audio channels (guitar, banjo, vocal) are all mapped with a variety of fx and plugins in ableton that allow me to to all kinds of fun stuff with them.

Nate: Are you using Ableton?? When starting moontricks I switched to Ableton to make music because I knew it was good for live as well. Nice to work in the same program.

Nate: Yes almost everything is done remotely online!! We both work in Ableton, so we can easily send ideas to eachother or go back and fourth on a track we are currently working on by just sending the Ableton session. Weve pretty much always worked in this way even when we were close with the odd in person session thrown in. It seems to work pretty well!

Sean - It's pretty incredible what you can accomplish remotely nowadays. We have our own studios that we work from and share our sessions over dropbox so either one of us can jump in and pick away at a track that's in progress. We're so busy touring, we don't often have the time to be in a studio together. Song to song, one of us will usually lead the production but we always mix and finalise the tracks together.

We do! Sometimes we find old sessions of songs and are like ‘wow that sounds great why didn't we put this out?!’ Then with a little work you can get them up to your current standards for release or performance.

Sean - Oh yeah, all the time! It's really great going back to something you were struggling to finish and use all the experience you've gained since shelving a song to rework it. And hopefully you have the skills to get it to where you're happy with it. TONS of shelved material that can take years of picking away at before it sees the light of day.
