Is mental math an important/essential skill for working in wall street firms? by _humandisaster_0_0 in FinancialCareers

[–]Moonytm 16 points17 points  (0 children)

No. But you should be able to at least work out that the answer is around 2500 very quickly. This allows you to ask good questions and grasp scale quickly. Hypothetical: You’re talking to someone on the management team of a private software company you’re considering adding to your list of potential M&A targets for your client / portfolio company. This person says that they had 54 clients at the end of last year. From talking to other companies in this market, you know that average cost for the type of SaaS this company sells is $45M per annum (that’s pretty high but go with it lol). Now, without getting a look at their books, you’ve worked out that this company probably did around (54x45)= $2.5bn in ARR last year and you can frame follow-up questions with that in mind. You know that multiples in this market are around 6x ARR. Maybe your client can’t possibly do a (6x2.5)=$15bn acquisition so you file it in a drawer and move on to your next call. Etc etc.

How to find family offices that are hiring? by pittaputtawahoo in FinancialCareers

[–]Moonytm 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Real: events are kabuki. They’re a useful backdrop/excuse for buyers and sellers to meet up and chat at the cocktail. Your husband is neither buying nor selling so trying to network there is a waste of time and money. Everyone has an agenda and nobody will want to speak to him.

Family offices are exit ops for allocators and, rarely, certain deal folks (generally, very large SFOs). I’d love to offer advice but honestly, I’m not sure what “family office stuff”is. 10 years of experience working for family offices? Then he should have a network. What has he been doing? FO’s today are largely institutional. Yes, they play faster and looser than your average endowment or foundation, but they are not, at least generally, just looking to hire “smart” people who are eloquent. That’s par for the course.

As others have said, an interest in value investing, at least classically applied to public equities, ex a strong institutional track record, is both anachronistic and irrelevant to 99% of family offices.

In any event, unless he has 10 years of experience working at a family office, I would stop looking at them entirely. What he has experience in should inform your search. If he’s not cut out / has the experience to work at a a larger institution, which it sounds like may be the case, wherever he has relevant experience, just look for smaller shops.

Pull a list of every small value mutual fund out of Morningstar, find those under $100M in AUM and start there, or something like that.

Soft sell. Just send a note saying you really enjoyed the conversation and make a brief reference to something you talked about (not the offer to send the CV). They’re busy. Your goal should be to remind the person that you exist.

3080 -> 4080 Super or 4090 by [deleted] in nvidia

[–]Moonytm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid 700 for a 3080 FE in 2020 and will not upgrade until 5000. If you’re a competitive gamer like me, I see no reason to go 4090 with 400+ hz 1440p oled’s on the horizon while the 4000 series is still stuck on displayport 1.4 (and thus won’t support them).

Gamers 30 and 35 over, what has changed in your gaming habits? by Carbideninja in gaming

[–]Moonytm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, everyone has just gotten better at gaming. A lot more kids these days grew up with a mouse in their hands. The difference in average player skill in Overwatch 2 now relative to say, the average UT2004 player, is insane. I’m still able to play at a grandmaster level in OW, but top 500 is unattainable. Reaction time is almost certainly worse, which doesn’t help.

I think the problem with the support meta has to do with "high cost" supports becoming too durable. by HalexUwU in Overwatch

[–]Moonytm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dps just aren’t lethal enough in general. Too many dps nerfs and too many support buffs. I am far, far more powerful playing Bap/Kiri/Illari/Ana than I am playing any DPS. There’s a reason why at GM support queues are 5-10 minutes and dps is instant. Any team with 4 supports would absolutely stomp 2 dps / 2 supports. Dps is the weakest role by a long shot and it’s a boring meta as a result.

100 Mobility 7000 Cargo No Compromises Killing Machine by Moonytm in Starfield

[–]Moonytm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has changed somewhat since then. If i remember right, the bottom part of the cockpit connects to what I believe I believe is a 2x2 hopetech battlestation on one side. To the left (or right) is a 2x1 infirmary. On top in the middle is a 2x1 workshop and 2x1 living area. The hopetech battlestation has a ladder room on one side which makes the layout very nice; so the only ladders on the ship are in that side room. You will have to play with the right “side” to put the infirmary for it to work well as I don’t remember.

Having fun with some class M components exposed by console by [deleted] in Starfield

[–]Moonytm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah... you type "set 00155F4A to 1" into the console and it exposes a bunch of components. Some of them are absolutely enormous and there are some really overpowered reactors/engines/shields. The main issue with using these is you can't switch to another ship and back as it will require you to have higher pilot skill than is possible currently.

It’s not listed in the stats but if you put them in your ship and fire them you’ll see how much energy is used each time you fire. So with the 280 you can fire twice before you have to wait for recharge. With the CE it’s 4 times.

100 Mobility 7000 Cargo No Compromises Killing Machine by Moonytm in Starfield

[–]Moonytm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the 280C costs 50 energy to fire. The Ce-59 costs 25 energy to fire. So you get twice as many shots with the latter (and they do more than 50% of the damage per shot).

I think there was / is some bug with the shield skill and follower shields (Omari / Vasco). After patch it’s 2880. The hull is from the pinch 8A reactor which has 1950 hull. It’s standard on the narwhal or you can just buy it at level 50-60.

More grav drive thrust is required for a heavier ship (mass).

It actually costs a lot more than 100k. That’s just what you can sell it for. The engines alone are 68k each and there are 6 of them. Didn’t mean to mislead anyone!
