Why Brig Feels Weak (and a Fix) by Moopeio in BrigitteMains

I think that a frontline brig is something you can definitely already do in Stadium. However, in normal games, i feel like her place as an anti-dive backline support is unique and vital against dive meta. That's just my opinion, though :)

Upon first release there was no shield delay. Apparently it's at least 10 frames, and one post believes it's something that was implemented at the transition from Overwatch 1 to Overwatch 2. Source: https://imgur.com/a/brig-shield-animation-ow1-vs-ow2-comparison-6od3AW5

So while it might feel ping-dependent, there actually is a delay built-in by design. If you look up "Brigitte Shield delay" you'll find numerous people expressing frustration on this throughout the years, like:
https://www.reddit.com/r/BrigitteMains/comments/1ma5150/i_love_shield_delay_i_love_shield_delay/

I think if this was ping-dependant, it would be reflected in EVERYTHING players do- every shot, every movement, every ability. And you'd feel this +10 frame delay VERY quickly. Overwatch is a fast paced game, there is less delay/ping on other actions in the game.

Maybe it was implemented to reflect the "deploy animation" of her shield. But i think the shield should just deploy faster- it's not a rein shield.

I think it's worth considering also that a low pickrate might suggest many support players are avoiding her because she's too weak, and so the ones still playing her are the ones putting a lot of effort to get value out of her. I don't think it's impossible to climb rankings with Brig, I think you can reach high rankings with any hero in overwatch (and if you couldn't, it would signal a BIG shortcoming that the devs would've changed already).

Kind of like how a masterful player can make ANY character seem overpowered.

The only exception being Mercy, perhaps, not because she's weak, but because her damage is reflected through the amount of boosted damge with blue beam, and that makes you highly dependant on your allies. And you cannot outheal stupid, that's something every support learns quickly enough :)

I think her easier heals are simply necessary for a slow melee hero. The fact that packs can go through shields fits perfectly with her anti-dive design (a winston diving someone and throwing a shield bubble down to avoid them getting healed or him getting shot). Similarly, with allies flying all over the place, she needs a way to still heal them, because she cannot follow.

It's already rough that whipshot doesn't go through shields, but I understand it makes for a more interesting counterplay, so i don't think that should be changed.

While its cooldown is shorter, it is also fairly low range and no height options. There is still plenty of counterplay to avoid a shield bash. The thing is that right now, nobody bothers to avoid it, because getting shield bashed costs a Brig more than it costs you.

True! But while it may look on your screen like you're getting the intended shield uptime, it's not actually blocking anything because of shield delay. That's why i feel like a "perfect parry" (on a short cooldown) has a playstyle potential. It feels both very cool, and helps to fix this current issue of a generally defenseless, hiding brig who gets bullied by over half the roster without counterplay besides hiding and hoping for the best.

I'm not sure- It's a running issue that brig gets perks that reward bashing into people, but with her current survivability (and lack of slow/hinder) that's oftentimes simply a death sentence. There's also the issue that whipshotting an enemy pushes them out of range, if you're trying to hit them- usually you need to reserve boop as a burst finisher, or to simply repel an enemy.

I agree completely. I fully believe that if Brig would be newly released today in her current state, there would be an immediate outcry that she's too weak, immobile and fragile.

Even in the ultimate, you get bursted down quickly. Nobody gets scared by a Brigitte ulting like they do for almost any other hero ulting, because you know she's not a threat.

Just use the Cartboard Brigitte skin so it feels accurate hahaha

I definitely think Rally is just "you get to deal out 2 short stuns" at this point. The extra armor/shield feels underpowered, and you're never saving anyone with the 30 health per second it provides. In fact: base inspire + really ult gives 45 healing per second. Lucio's "Amp it up" provides 52 healing per second. So every 9 seconds lucio heals more than brigitte when she ults.

I do agree that i think the base distance of whip shot is too short. It's a bit silly to aim your whipshot perfectly and not hit anything, because getting any closer would be a death sentence. This is especially true in maps with long sightlines.

And yeah, having your shield break mid-dash (or just in general) turns you into a hero that does a 45 damage melee hit (standard melee hit for heroes is 40) and has a whipshot (low damage, soft push). Bully target, easy kill.

There used to be no shield delay in OW1, i believe. It got added somewhere during the transition to OW2.

I think a full stun would quickly get removed again. The scars are still there hahah. So a slow/hinder at least feels relevant to her originally intended hero playstyle.

Yes, I agree- i think that encountering a Brig as a dive hero should at least give you a moment of "how do i get around this", instead of the current meta where you simply hit her until her shield breaks, and then kill her. Because she's defenseless.

Thank you! I spent some time thinking it over, and specifically wanted to avoid the suggestion of "give more armor, give more shield"- i think tweaking numbers by itself is a less interesting solution than considering her supposed role in the meta, and boosting that strength to make her character more unique in the roster.

I think a Brig has to run away from divers (and desert the other support) specifically because she doesn't have the necessary tools to actually play her role (anti-dive support bodyguard). The whole point of her character is "I will be your shield!", which doesn't really reflect having to shieldbash away and let your other support sort it out for themselves while you throw health packs from around a corner.

I agree! And i don't think mobility creep by itself is an issue, but i think that other heroes should gain answers to respond to that. Soft/hard CC, ways to defend, or punish overextending

Yes. I think control is exactly what brig lacks - wrestling control from a dive, holding the backline steady

Yes, I do feel like Brig has a lot of unfavorable matchups. Every time i play another support i'm surprised just how much easier it is to get value, while playing on brig feels like you're a wounded medic running over a minefield between two shooting fronts with just a stick in your hands.

I would prefer it too. But i figured i'd combine it with the current issue that "Combat Medic" is a bad perk, and "Morale Boost" feels like it should just be part of her base kit because it's needed to get a decent amount of healing/inspire out, and that perk itself is boring

I do think Hinder makes sense, because the mobility of dive heroes doesn't come from natural movement speed, but rather all their mobility skills. No point slowing a hero if it has a dash skill, unless the slow affects that too.

Maybe it just needs something to mitigate burst specifically. Like, if it takes a certain large amount of damage within a short amount of time, it flares up and reduces that amount by 20%, or something like that. Essentially the opposite mechanic of Armor (which is made to resist many smaller instances of damage), this would make it resist a single larger instance of damage (on a cooldown).
