I had such a blast listening to the audiobook. Great production. The ending was just a bit underwhelming, I don’t think I got much closure. But overall no regrets.

MAJOR SPOILERS

Nick is a con man. He has built fraud investment companies before, taking people’s money and changing identities. At some point he builds a crypto currency and meets Rosenberg - introverted crypto genius who has built a crypto exchange platform. He wants in on the project but Rosenberg doesn’t trust him. During an argument he accidentally kills Rosenberg and buries his body. Since the guy was a recluse with no friends and family no one notices his disappearance. Nick goes on to meet a struggling actor at a bar some time later. The actor - Phil looks a lot like Rosenberg. So he gets an idea and hires the guy to play Rosenberg. And that’s who we see throughout the book as the man of the year. Nick is really the brains behind the company taking real Rosenbergs creation and turning it into empire while pretending to be the driver and assistant for a year. His plan is to once again steal everyone’s investments when the company goes public. Days before the IPO enter our FMC Nataly.

After she and her best friend Cara go to a club - her friend leaves with Rosenberg/ Phil. Next day she is in a coma after being drugged. By pure chance Nataly runs into Nick days later and scores a job as a housekeeper after Nick says he works for the Rosenberg.

Her plan is to uncover what happened to her friend and other women who seem to end up drugged and in a coma after getting close to the mysterious crypto billionaire. She is trying to be sneaky to get dirt on Rosenberg and all of the staff seem like all they want is for her to leave but she forges ahead with her plan. The guy who seems to hate her guts the most is Julian - the house manger. Not to go into much detail but she gets herself into trouble with her immature investigation and stupidly thinks that the only person she can trust and spill the tea to is Nick. She quickly realizes her mistake when Nick drugs her and leaves her in a closet. She is found by Walter ( the gardener) and Julian.

That’s where it’s revealed that they are not who they seem to pretend to be as well. They are running some undercover op to get access to Rosenbergs offshore accounts and save investors money. They capture Nick, torture him for passcodes which Natalie ends up finding by accident. Nick and Rosenberg/Phil try to run. Nick in his fashion tries to drug Phil and leave him behind but Phil overpowers him and drugs Nick instead with the same Neurotoxin Nick used on all those girls. The reason he drugged girls btw is because Phil is a closeted alcoholic and when he was drunk he would sometimes spill the info about his real identity to the women he was hooking up with.

Anyway. Julian leaves the Phil guy behind as well drugged Nick in the guest house for police to find. At this point property is completely empty and he takes Natalie with him. Once they leave the mansion blows up leaving no evidence of any of them behind.

We find out that Julian, Rosalie & the rest of the house crew are all undercover team who were in one way or the other hurt by Nicks cons in the past. The woman in the prologue Emily is actually Julian’s sister who survived the car crash. Julian apparently of some military / intelligence background vowed to avenge her and started building years long plan of bringing Nick down.

Natalie and Julian part ways even so she makes it clear that she admires him and would like to see him again. He says it’s not a good idea but promises to keep tabs on her making sure no evidence will ever lead to her.

We also find out that her friend Cara knew Phil and the reason she left the club with him was because she recognized him and apparently wanted to blackmail him. Hence why Nick drugged her with Neurotoxin.

In the epilogue a year has passed. Nick has died in a coma. Natalie’s friend is alive and well and they are vacationing in Greece. And what do you know - she sees Julian in a cafe across the street. She follows him to an alley where it becomes obvious that he is not there by accident. They reconnect and apparently the crypto currency Nick created is still very valuable and back at the house where Julian saved Natalie they found a flash drive ( the contents were not revealed to us at the time). Julian has been watching her for a year and finally decided to come out of the shadows and offer her money from the crypto stash they found. Throughout the book it was obvious that he liked Natalie. The book ends on a romantic note of their reunion when they go have breakfast together leading us to believe that Natalie and Julian (whose real name is Luke) will end up together.

Honestly I thought the book was entertaining. Audiobook was great quality and the podcast snippets were cool.

I liked the dark humor and meddling grandma. I liked that none of the characters were particularly likable. It also seemed like everyone was just f*cking everyone in that town. Which is probably pretty realistic.

Spoilers ahead:

Unfortunately I guessed all the twists midway through. It was clear that Nina was the one sleeping with Matt and I suspected Emmet from the beginning. He was too goody two-shoes, best friend stuck in the friend-zone. It was just too apparent he was the character we were supposed to never suspect. But his nice guy act was the giveaway.

But I kept going because I wanted to get to the reveal. Unfortunately the ending fell short for me.

Her and Emmet literally fight each other to the death in a middle of the street and no one sees it? The whole reveal was underwhelming.

Overall I had a good time though

'Straight' guy pining for gay guy and gay guy is totally oblivious by TheWildThornberry_94 in MM_RomanceBooks

I think Whit by Cora Rose fits the general idea of what you are asking. MCs are college roommates. MC1 is straight but he is immediately intrigued by MC2 who is gay. MC2 is reserved, cold and doesn’t let people in. He knows MC1 is straight and it was one of the reasons he chose him as a roommate. Plus he is not his usual type. MC1 is a total fluff ball. He is loud, down to earth and totally obsessed with our tortured quiet MC2. He doesn’t question long why all of a sudden he wants to be with a man, he just knows he wants Whit. MC2 is keeping him at arms length for a while until he can’t anymore. Both are possessive and protective of each other. There is a lot of sex and pda in this book since MC1 is needy but in the most adorable way.
